Abstract This volume comprises papers prepared for the 8th World Conference on Continuing Professional Development (Bologna, Italy, 18-20 August 2009). Within the broad theme of creating a positive work environment for a multi-generational workforce in library and information organizations, the conference addresses managing between and across generations, mentoring and coaching, attracting people to the profession and developing a new generation of leaders, re-skilling and transferability of skills, succession planning and passing on knowledge.; Jana Varlejs, Rutgers State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, USA; Liz Lewis, BBC, London, UK; Graham Walton, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Title translation Identitätsfördernde Interventionen: Wie man die Stärken des Einzelnen effektiv hervorhebt. (DeepL)
Abstract Many low-status groups are portrayed as deficient. Countering such stigmatizing narratives, identity-reframing interventions reframe low-status group members as strong and resourceful agents. This approach can help members of low-status groups successfully pursue major life goals. In one test, an identity-reframing intervention increased engagement in an online-university among refugees by 23% over 1 year. In another, it increased the degree to which people with experiences of depression successfully completed a meaningful self-chosen goal over 2 weeks. The present review describes how identity-reframing interventions work on a practical and theoretical level, where they might not work, how they contribute to theory and practice, how they can be adapted to new populations and contexts, and what novel questions they direct us to.

Abstract Librarians and information workers the world over are faced with the constant challenge of remaining abreast of developments in their field. Rapid changes in technology and workplace roles threaten to make their skills obsolete unless they undertake constant professional development. This international collection presents a comprehensive overview of current continuing professional development theory and practice for those who manage and work in library and information services. Papers by academics and practitioners describe numerous innovative responses to emerging continuing education and training needs, including workplace learning; individual learning and learning organisations.; Das Buch [...] dokumentiert die Vielfalt der Fragestellungen und L

Abstract Cave art has been an integral part of human history, providing a glimpse into the lives and cultures of our ancestors. Prehistoric botanical art is an important medium that can help us to redefine our intimate relationship with plants. The findings from our work provide some evidence from the European Palaeolithic period that modern plant awareness disparity (PAD) might be more deeply rooted in our past. By inspiring a deeper appreciation and understanding of the natural world, cave art can help people to reconnect with plants, thus tackling PAD.

Abstract Large-scale rock formations, referred to as "rockmasses", consist of intact rock separated by pre-existing discontinuities (i.e., joints). The mechanical behavior of rockmasses is difficult to directly test in the laboratory due to the required specimen scale. Instead, Synthetic Rockmass Modeling (SRM) is often used to simulate field-scale rockmass behavior. SRM requires a calibrated discrete element model (DEM) of intact rock combined with a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN). While the SRM concept has been informally determined to provide reasonable results based on practitioner experience, detailed and peer-reviewed validation is lacking. The goal of this study was to evaluate the predictive capabilities of the SRM method. Previously available data on intact and rockmass analog laboratory specimens of Blanco Mera granite containing DFNs with two joint sets were used as a basis for the SRM created in this study. Specifically, the intact DEM was a Bonded Block Model (BBM), generated to match the grain structure and composition of Blanco Mera granite and the model's input parameters were calibrated so that the behavior of the BBM matched that of the intact laboratory specimens. The predictive capabilities of the model were evaluated by recreating the DFN from the jointed laboratory specimens within the intact BBM and comparing the behavior of the jointed models back to the jointed laboratory specimens, which has not been previously studied in the literature. The BBM was found capable of approximately predicting the behavior of rockmass analog specimens containing a pre-existing DFN without further calibration, which shows potential for the use of SRM in both industry and academia. Specifically, the BBM predicted the strength, dilatancy, and microfracturing behavior of the jointed laboratory specimens.

Abstract There are a growing number of older patients who are retaining their natural teeth. Though the majority of these patients remain independent, many are affected by frailty, multi-morbidity or dementia. The complexities associated with dementia have led to guidelines being produced by the FGDP, Dementia friendly dentistry, although other features of ageing can similarly increase the risk of dental disease and the consequent complexity, safety and suitability of providing treatment. Prevention of dental disease is crucial for older patients as the features of ageing may make the risk of treatment greater than that of younger patients. Conscious sedation or general anaesthesia, typically provided by a specialist dental service, may be required to facilitate treatment, though these approaches may have significant short and long-term impacts on older patients. Clinical guidelines and legislation are available to assist in decision-making for patients who may lack mental capacity, yet for patients who are able to consent for treatment, a comprehensive discussion as part of an informed consent process remains crucial to determine the most appropriate approach to care provision.
