Abstract Aim: To assess the value of semi-quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and quantitative diffusion-weighted imaging parameters combined with human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in predicting the pathological grade and lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) of endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EAC).
Materials and methods: Between October 2018 and December 2021, 60 women (mean age, 55 [range, 32-77] years) with EAC underwent preoperative pelvic MRI and HE4 level measurements. The positive enhancement integral (PEI), time to peak, maximum slope of increase (MSI), and maximum slope of decrease were measured by manually drawing a region of interest on the neoplastic tissue. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to calculate the diagnostic efficiency of the single parameter and combined factors.
Results: Lower apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) were observed in high-grade tumours (G3) than in low-grade tumours (G1/G2). PEI, MSI, and HE4 levels were higher in the high-grade tumours than in the low-grade tumours (p<0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) for G3 diagnosis using multiparametric MRI combined with HE4 was 0.929. ADC values were significantly lower in the EAC with LVSI than in those without LVSI. Tumours with LVSI showed higher PEI and HE4 levels than those without LVSI (p<0.05). The AUC for LVSI-positive diagnosis using multiparametric MRI combined with HE4 was 0.814.
Conclusion: Semi-quantitative DCE-MRI, ADC values, and serum HE4 levels can be used to predict tumour grade and LVSI, and the prediction efficiency of multiparametric MRI combined with serum HE4 is better than that of any single factor.

Abstract Objective: To assess the efficacy of targeted agents (TAs) in the treatment of elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC).
Materials and methods: Databases from PubMed, Web of Science and abstracts presented at ASCO meeting up to December 31, 2015 were searched to identify relevant studies. Eligible studies included prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating therapies with or without TAs in elderly patients with AGC. The endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Statistical analyses were conducted by using Comprehensive Meta Analysis software (Version 2.0).
Results: A total of 1,759 elderly patients with AGC from ten RCTs were included for analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that the addition of TAs to therapies in elderly patients significantly improved OS (HR 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79-0.99, p = 0.032), but not for PFS (HR 0.83, 95% CI: 0.66-1.06, p = 0.13) when compared to controls. Subgroup analysis according to targeted agents indicated that survival benefit was observed for anti-HER-2 agents (HR 0.71, 95% CI: 0.55-0.91, p = 0.006) and angiogenesis inhibitors (AIs) (HR 0.78, 95% CI: 0.62-0.99, p = 0.04) in terms of OS. Conversely, no survival benefit was found for anti-EGFR agents in terms of OS (HR 1.12, 95% CI: 0.93-1.36, p = 0.24) and PFS (HR 1.35, 95% CI: 0.88-2.07, p = 0.17). No publication bias was detected by Begg's and Egger's tests for OS.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the addition of TAs to therapies in elderly patients with AGC offers an improved OS, which can be ascribed to AIs and ant-HER2 agents. With available evidence, anti-EGFR agents could not be recommended for use in elderly AGC patients.

Abstract Mangrove ecosystems are vulnerable to rising sea levels. When the sea level rises, the plants are exposed to increased salinity and tidal submergence. In Taiwan, the mangrove species Kandelia obovata and Rhizophora stylosa grow in different habitats and at different elevations. To understand the response of photosynthesis to salinity and submergence in mangroves adapted to different tidal elevations, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured in K. obovata and R. stylosa under different salinity (20 and 40‰) and submergence treatments. The period of light induction of photosynthesis for the two mangrove species was >60 min. In the induction process, the increase in photosystem efficiency was faster than the increase in stomatal opening, but CO2 fixation efficiency was restricted by stomatal conductance. The constraint of stomatal opening speed is related to the conservative water-use strategy developed in response to mangrove environments. Submergence increased the photosynthetic rate of K. obovata, but not that of R. stylosa. Although R. stylosa was more salt tolerant than K. obovata, R. stylosa was not submergence tolerant in a high-salinity environment, which may be the reason for the higher intertidal elevations observed for R. stylosa in comparison with K. obovata. The photosynthetic rate and energy-dependent quenching (qE) of the two mangroves presented a negative relationship with photoinhibition, and high-salt treatment simultaneously reduced photosynthetic rate and qE. A decrease in the photosynthetic rate increased excess energy, whereas a decrease in qE decreased photoprotection; both increased photoinhibition. As the degree of photoinhibition can be easily measured in the field, it is a useful ecological monitoring index that provides a suitable reference for mangrove restoration, habitat construction and ecological monitoring.

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary LJP supplementation on growth performance, heat stress resistance and immune status of weaned piglets raised in a high-temperature environment (34 ± 3°C). A total of 72 Barkshire * Licha Black crossbred piglets were weaned at 30 days of age (BW, 5.88 ± 0.16 kg) and fed either without or with 100, 200 or 400 mg/kg LJP in a completely randomized design, with 3 pens per diet (6 pigs per pen). On day 21, a total of 12 piglets were selected to collect blood samples. The results showed that 200 and 400 mg/kg LJP supplementation decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of piglets compared to the control group (P=0.037) and dietary LJP linearly increased average daily gain and decreased FCR of piglets (P=0.037 and 0.011, respectively). In addition, adding 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg LJP reduced the serum HSP70 content compared to the control group (P=0.019) and dietary LJP linearly and quadratically decreased the serum HSP70 content of piglets (P=0.030 and 0.011, respectively). Moreover, supplementation of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg LJP increased the serum (NO) and nitric oxide acid phosphatase (ACP) content compared to the control group (P=0.019; P=0.003) and dietary LJP linearly increased the serum lysozyme, NO and ACP contents (P=0.039; P=0.005; P=0.001). In conclusion, dietary LJP has potential to regulate systemic defence property of weaned piglets raised in a high temperature condition, accompanied by increased growth performance.

Abstract Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder associated with mutations in the thymidine phosphorylase (TYMP) gene. The main objective of this study was to characterize the genetic profiles of the deceased proband's family members (N = 4) using DNA sequencing and to determine miRNA deregulation in MNGIE using miRNA microarray profiling and bioinformatic analysis. We found that the genetic profile of the younger sister showed similar TYMP gene mutations as that of the proband with the exception of a heterozygous mutation in exon 10. The miRNA microarray revealed 55 significantly up-regulated and 65 significantly down-regulated miRNAs. These miRNAs have been implicated in various mitochondrial dynamics such as energy metabolism, Krebs cycle, mitochondria-associated apoptosis, and mitophagy. In conclusion, we demonstrate that blood miRNAs are deregulated in the pathogenesis of MNGIE and these changes may have therapeutic implications. Further experimental studies will be required to elucidate the functional miRNA-mRNA interactions in MNGIE.
