Abstract Purpose: Numerous cross-sectional investigations have delved into the association between the self-esteem of college students and problematic social media use (PSMU). Nevertheless, the debated causal sequence between the two factors persists, and their unclear developmental connection over time prevails.
Methods: We used a questionnaire method to follow 321 students in Chinese college over a period of 18 months and three times, of which 137 are male and 184 are female, with an average age of 18.42 years (SD = 0.78) at time 1. Descriptive statistics were used to present the general characteristics of the study participants. Moreover, the latent growth model was used to explore the developmental trajectory of self-esteem and PSMU and to explore the interplay between the two factors from a developmental perspective. On this basis, a cross-lagged model was used to verify the causal relationship between self-esteem and PSMU.
Results: In China, (a) the self-esteem levels of college students continuously decline during their academic years, whilst PSMU levels steadily increase. (b) The self-esteem of Chinese college students significantly negatively predicts PSMU. (c) The initial level of self-esteem amongst Chinese college students can significantly negatively predict the initial level of PSMU. Additionally, the rate of decline in self-esteem amongst Chinese college students can negatively predict the rate of increase in PSMU.
Conclusion: Obtained results serve as a valuable resource for researchers and educators, enabling strategic intervention in addressing issues related to PSMU amongst college students from a developmental perspective.

Abstract Editorial: In this Information Age, computers and mobile phones are important carriers of data transmission and many scientists work hard to speed up that process. Professor Peter Delfyett of the University of Central Florida has done just that. A member of the US National Academy of Engineering, he developed the world's fastest and most powerful mode-locked semiconductor laser. I have known Professor Delfyett since 2011, when he took part in the CIOMP-OSA International Summer Session. His sincere and friendly attitude, humorous and optimistic nature and excellent academic style left a deep impression. Driven by curiosity, human beings are constantly exploring the unknown, and asking questions. Einstein once suggested, defining what the problem is can be more important than solving it. And this is what Professor Delfyett has been advocating: pursue the ultimate academic goal, ask questions, believe in yourself and never give up. In addition, he has been striving to integrate industry and scientific research, so that scientific research results can truly benefit mankind. And now, please follow Light People to the latest cutting-edge progress in optics.

Abstract EDITORIAL: 'In the short but hot summer nights, only by opening doors and windows can the room be cooled down slightly' complained the famous Chinese poet Fu Du in his poem Summer Night Lament more than 1000 years ago. Currently, people are suffering from the summer heat, with ambient temperatures around or exceeding 40 °C. Phrases such as "killer hot days" are no longer exaggerated statements. Hot weather can not only frustrate people, but also make people sick or even endanger lives owing to heatstroke. Fortunately, scientists have come up with a great invention, which will provide us with some much-needed relief in hot summers-the optical metafabric. The magic of this innovation is that, although it feels just like a normal fabric and has all the necessary properties of a wearable fabric, a garment made with it can cool down one's body by nearly 5 °C even under direct sunlight, making it ideal for summer clothing. In the last few years, a team led by Prof. Guangming Tao of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has achieved remarkable progress in the area of optical metafabrics, finding new applications for this material and making it more affordable. Now, please follow our Light Science Editor as he explores this amazing new material and finds how it has been used in the industry, society, and Winter Olympics.

Abstract In this paper, the prescribed-time stabilization is studied for stochastic high-order nonlinear systems. Different from the previous research results on stochastic high-order nonlinear systems where only asymptotic stabilization or finite-time stabilization is considered, this paper proposes a new design to achieve stabilization in the prescribed-time. Specifically, the designed controller can ensure that the closed-loop system has an almost surely unique strong solution and the equilibrium of the closed-loop system is prescribed-time mean-square stable. The design method is verified by an example.

Abstract Editorial: As 5 G ever becomes a part of everyday life and 6 G is also on the agenda, terahertz technology has gradually become known by the public, and is referred to as the "third eye" for human beings to understand the world.Terahertz is considered one of the top ten technologies that will change the world due to its unique properties. In 2019, astronomers were able to observe a black hole for the first time, using a terahertz astronomical telescope. Terahertz is no longer far away from our lives, whether it is information, medicine, or food safety and other fields. It is everywhere, triggering major changes in people's work and lifestyle.Today's guest of Light People is an internationally renowned scholar who has been engaged in terahertz research for many years, Professor Xi-Cheng Zhang works at the University of Rochester, one of the three major optics educational centers in the United States. As a pioneer in the field of terahertz technology, after years of practice, he has successfully generated terahertz waves using water, changing how we see water with THz wave forever.Next, please follow the Light Science Editor into the terahertz world to learn about the latest and most cutting-edge science and technology and the "story" behind it.

Abstract In China, farmers' loan difficulties have become a major problem restricting increases in farmers' incomes and the economic development of rural areas. The existing studies of the management and control of farmers' credit risk have mostly been pre-management, which cannot efficiently prevent and reduce the occurrence of farmers' credit risk in time. This paper uses the T-S neural network model to build a farmers' credit risk early warning system so that formal financial institutions can predict the occurrence of and changes in the farmers' credit risks in a timely manner and quickly undertake countermeasures to reduce losses. After training and testing, a model with a higher degree of fit is used to analyze the credit level of farmers in Shaanxi Province from 2016 to 2018. The results demonstrate that the credit level of farmers in this area is continuously improving, in agreement with the actual situation. The results also show that the prediction accuracy of the T-S fuzzy neural network is high, verifying the rationality of the selection of test samples.

Abstract EDITORIAL: "When all those around me are drunk, I alone am sober," lamented an ancient Chinese poet on fighting a lone and helpless cause. In the world of science a few decades ago, there was also a lone researcher who pursued the field of optical resolution despite suspicions and derisions. Unlike those who made their names young, this scientist only succeeded thanks to his own perseverance. He developed the 4Pi microscope and successfully increased the vertical resolution of traditional optical microscopes by 3-7 times. Once he sold the patent to a company, he invested the little personal money gained from the patent in breaking the Abbe diffraction limit. Despite all his hard work, his papers kept getting rejected by respected journals, and his work was subjected to mistrust and even criticism. This scientist is Stefan Hell, someone who is never afraid of difficulties and ever determined to forge ahead.Hell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2014 for being the first to propose and demonstrate that the optical diffraction limit can be broken, and for successfully developing the STED super-resolution fluorescence microscope. Later Hell and his colleagues proposed and commercialized MINFLUX, which brought optical microscopy technology to the three-dimensional single-nanometer scale, opening the "post-superresolution era".Frank and sincere, persistent and humble, boldly innovative and resolute, Hell is a scientist, an entrepreneur, a mentor, and an everyday man who enjoys life.In this interview, we will reacquaint ourselves with the Nobel laureate, Stefan Hell.
