Abstract Steroid hormones are often used in animal agriculture but are currently banned for use in domesticated fowl because residual hormones could be present in eggs for human consumption. Egg samples from eight common commercial poultry layer breeds (Hy‐Line W‐36, Hy‐Line Brown, ISA‐White, ISA‐Brown, Lohnmann Ultra‐Lite, Lohnmann‐Brown, Hisex White, Hisex Brown) in Taiwan were screened for a combination of 15 natural and synthetic steroid hormones by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) for consumer assurance. Only natural hormones such as progesterone, 4‐androstene‐3,17‐dione, and testosterone were detected. Regarding each breed, the interaction effect (age × shell color), main effect (age or shell color), and blocking effect (lighting system) were further analyzed by using 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatment in a randomized block design. We also discovered associations between yolk steroid hormone levels and laying hen age, as well as lighting conditions. Additionally, we found a correlation between hormone levels and eggshell color, suggesting a potential role in brown pigmentation. Ultimately, we concluded that detectable steroid hormone levels in eggs were not a consumer health risk. Furthermore, these data provide empirical hormone concentrations in various types of commercial layer breeds for future research.

Abstract Exercise is an indispensable part of human daily life. The knee joint is inseparable from human movement. The knee is relatively fragile and easy to get injuries. Therefore, the biomechanical properties of knee joints were studied. The VICON T40S 3D motion acquisition and analysis system and the AMTI 3D force measurement platform were used to collect the lower limb kinematics and dynamics data of five male volunteers. Then the knee angle and moment of the human body are analyzed, the foot pressure was obtained by force plate, and the ground reaction force was obtained. The results show that: (1) in terms of knee flexion and extension torques, the peak stretching torques occurred in about 25% and 65% of the gait cycles. At the beginning of the gait, which is the flexion moment, the knee joint produces a moment of -24.65 Nmm, 25% of gait cycles reached the maximum peak value of 896.89 Nmm, 65% of gait cycles reached the second peak value of 315.81 Nmm; (2) The change of reaction force in a gait cycle is: when the ground starts to react, the ground reaction reaches 600 N. At normal times, the ground reaction force rapidly rises to the maximum value of 890 N; when the gait is in the middle of a single support phase, the ground reaction force is 462 N; when the ankle joint moves in plantar flexion, the ground reaction force increases to 830 N again; finally, when the toe is lifted off the ground, the ground reaction force quickly drops to zero; (3) in the course of a gait cycle, the spatial and temporal parameter curve distribution of the subjects was consistent, and the difference was not significant (

Abstract This study investigated how predictability and prosodic phrasing interact in accounting for the variability of syllable duration in Taiwan Southern Min. Speech data were extracted from 8 hours of spontaneous speech. Three predictability measurements were examined: bigram surprisal, bigram informativity, and lexical frequency. Results showed that higher informativity and surprisal led to longer syllables. As for the interaction with prosodic positions, there was a general weakening of predictability effects for syllables closer to the boundary, especially in the pre-boundary position, where pre-boundary lengthening was the strongest. However, the effect of word informativity appeared to be least modulated by this effect of boundary marking. These findings are consistent with a hypothesis that prosodic structure modulates the predictability effects on phonetic variability. The robustness of informativity in predicting syllable duration also suggests a possibility of stored phonetic variants associated with a word's usual contextual predictability.

Abstract Recently, due to the development of automation technology, torque measuring and monitoring technologies have been brought to the focus. However, the commercially available sensors have the disadvantage of large volume, which results in the difficulty of installation on existing automated machines. Responding to the above-mentioned problem, a contactless torque sensor that uses an electromagnetic coil combined with a permanent magnet was proposed. By adjusting the input electric current in the coil, the strength of the magnetic field can be controlled to generate a non-contact magnetic force to resist external torque loading. For the measurement of such a magnetic force, a cantilever-beam mechanism comprising a piezoelectric-loading (PZT-L) sensor is employed to estimate the external static force by measuring the variation of the electric impedance. According to the measured results, the proposed PZT-L sensor demonstrates the accuracy of the proposed design, for which the maximum estimated error was around 6%. Finally, the proposed contactless torque sensor with 11 cm in diameter and 2 cm in thickness was employed to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis. From the sensor characteristic measurement, the detection range for external torque can be from 7.8 to 125.6 N-mm when the driven current input ranged from 2 to 10 A. Therefore, the experimental results presented that the moment of inertia via the resisted torque can be adjusted by the proposed non-contact torque-sensing system according to the measuring condition.

Abstract Seismic metamaterials provide an innovative alternative in earthquake engineering by reducing the hazards from seismic waves without modifying the existing structures. Although many seismic metamaterials have been proposed, a design for a broad bandgap at low frequencies is still in demand. In this study, two novel seismic metamaterials, V- and N-shaped designs, are proposed. We found that by adding a line to the letter V, turning the V-shaped design into an N-shaped design, the bandgap can be broadened. Both the V- and N-shaped designs are arranged in a gradient pattern to combine the bandgaps from metamaterials with different heights. Using only concrete as the base material for the design makes the proposed seismic metamaterial cost effective. Finite element transient analysis and band structures are in good agreement, validating the accuracy of the numerical simulations. Surface waves are effectively attenuated over a broad range of low frequencies using the gradient V- and N-shaped seismic metamaterials.

Abstract Prostate cancer emerges as a life-threatening disease that affects approximately 1.3 million patients of male population globally. Various studies established lncRNAs as a critical role in prostate cancer progression by regulating multiple epigenetic pathways. Therefore, it is imperative to disclose the involvement of lncRNAs in prostate cancer and their usability as prognostic markers for the disease. The model was constructed using Cox and LASSO analysis. The accuracy of model was evaluated using various cohorts. Furthermore, the study assessed the correlative relationship of the model with tumor immunity, immunotherapy, SNV mutation, and drug sensitivity, among other factors. We developed an accurate and stable prognostic model for prostate cancer patients by screening out 11 m6A regulators related lncRNAs and integrating pathological features and age through a nomogram model. The model had satisfactory accuracy and stability in stratification of clinical outcomes of prostate cancer patients, as demonstrated by AUC values (higher than 0.7) at 3, 5, and 7 years in both internal and external cohorts. Moreover, we performed PCA analysis to confirm m6A-related lncRNAs as the best modeling strategy. We developed a prognosis predicting model based on 11 selected m6A modification related lncRNA, which displayed satisfactory potency in multiple cohorts.

Abstract Introduction: Semaglutide is a high-profile glucose-lowering drug that medical decision-makers have acknowledged in recent years. This rapid review aims to provide evidence-based clinical recommendations for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with semaglutide.
Methods: We conducted a rapid review of randomized controlled trial (RCT)-based meta-analyses (MAs) and systematic reviews (SRs) of cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) compared to other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) or placebo in patients with T2DM. Prospective cohort real-world studies (RWS) were also retrieved and subjected to MA. Four databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and ISPOR, were searched from inception to 5 March 2023. The outcomes of interest were hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), body weight, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and economic outcomes such as quality-adjusted life-years and total cost.
Results: We identified 33 publications: 22 RCT-based MAs, 1 SR of CEAs, and 10 RWS. Evidence showed that semaglutide at usual doses was associated with superior reductions in HbA1c and weight compared to most GLP-1 RAs in patients with T2DM who were drug naive, receiving basal insulin, or using oral hypoglycemic agents, and it was also associated with a lower number of MACE and was more cost-effective. Further, once-weekly semaglutide resulted in a significant reduction in HbA1c levels (-1.1%) and body weight (-4.88 kg) in routine clinical practice.
Conclusions: This review consolidates the positive current evidence base for prescribing semaglutide to patients with T2DM, but further rigorous studies are still urgently required to develop practice guidelines as innovative drugs become commercially available.
