Abstract Herein, we reported a general strategy for the synthesis of sulfur-containing primary alcohol derivatives by base-promoted ring-opening hydroxylation of cyclic sulfonium salts. A variety of sulfonium salts were successfully transformed into the desired hydroxylated products in moderate to excellent yields with good functional group tolerance. Moreover, the one-pot synthesis, scale-up reaction, and late-stage functionalization of complex molecules demonstrated the practicability of this synthetic protocol in the field of synthetic chemistry.

Abstract Task switching refers to a set of cognitive processes involved in shifting attention from one task to another. In recent years, researchers have applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the causal relationship between the parietal cortex and task switching. However, results from available studies are highly inconsistent. This may be due to the unclear understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, the current study utilized event-related potential (ERP) analysis to investigate the modulatory effects of tDCS on task-switching processes. Twenty-four subjects were recruited to perform both predictable and unpredictable parity/magnitude tasks under anodal (RA) and sham conditions. The results showed no significant changes in behavioral performance. However, marked tDCS-induced ERP changes were observed. Specifically, for the predictable task switching, compared with the sham condition, the target-N2 component occurred significantly earlier for switch trials than repeat trials under the RA condition in males, while no difference was found in females. For unpredictable task switching, under the sham condition, the P2 peak was significantly larger for switch trials compared with repeat trials, whereas this difference was not observed under the RA condition. These results indicated the causal relationship between the right parietal cortex and exogenous adjustment processes involved in task switching. Moreover, anodal tDCS over the right parietal cortex may lead to the manifestation of gender differences.

Abstract Isovalent doping offers a method to enhance the thermoelectric properties of semiconductors, yet its influence on the phonon structure and propagation is often overlooked. Here, we take CdX (X=Te, Se) compounds as an example to study the role of isovalent doping in thermoelectrics by first-principles calculations in combination with the Boltzmann transport theory. The electronic and phononic properties of Cd8Se8, Cd8Se7Te, Cd8Te8, and Cd8Te7Se are compared. The results suggest that isovalent doping with CdX significantly improves the thermoelectric performance. Due to the similar properties of Se and Te atoms, the electronic properties remain unaffected. Moreover, doping enhances anharmonic phonon scattering, leading to a reduction in lattice thermal conductivity. Our results show that optimized p-type(n-type) ZT values can reach 3.13 (1.33) and 2.51 (1.21) for Cd8Te7Se and Cd8Se7Te at 900 K, respectively. This research illuminates the potential benefits of strategically employing isovalent doping to enhance the thermoelectric properties of CdX compounds.

Abstract Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the primary cause of low back pain. Stem cell transplantation may be a possible approach to promote IVDD. This study was aimed to investigate the role of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in IVDD and the molecular mechanism. Annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) were treated with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) to induce oxidative stress injury. AFC biological functions were analyzed using a lactate dehydrogenase kit, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, flow cytometry, and western blot. The molecular mechanisms of BMSC functions were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, immunoprecipitation (IP), co-IP, GST pull-down, and cycloheximide treatment. Furthermore, the impacts of BMSCs in IVDD progression in vivo were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and H&E analysis. BMSCs inhibited TBHP-induced inflammation and pyroptosis in AFCs. Knockdown of SIRT1 reversed the effects on inflammation and pyroptosis of BMSCs. Moreover, SIRT1 promoted the deacetylation of ASC rather than NLRP3. SIRT1 interacted with ASC to reduce its protein stability, thereby negatively regulating ASC protein levels. In addition, BMSCs alleviated LPS-induced IVDD based on matrix hydrogels. BMSCs inhibited oxidative stress-induced pyroptosis and inflammation in AFCs, thereby alleviating IVDD, suggesting that BMSCs may contribute to treating intervertebral disc generation.

Abstract Deoxyribouridine (dU) is an abnormal nucleoside in DNA and plays vital roles in multiple biological and physiological processes. Here, we conducted a mass spectrometry-based screen for dU-binding proteins and found that the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein D (HNRNPD) could preferentially bind to dU-containing DNA. We also discovered that HNRNPD engages in the 5-Fluorouracil (5FU)-induced DNA damage response and can modulate the repair of dU in DNA in vitro and in human cells. Moreover, using a shuttle vector- and next-generation sequencing-based method, we unveiled the crucial role of HNRNPD in promoting the replicative bypass of dU in human cells. Taken together, these findings suggested that HNRNPD is a novel dU-bearing DNA-binding protein capable of regulating the removal of dU in DNA, and provided new insights into the molecular mechanisms of dU-associated diseases.

Abstract Mangroves, which have extremely high primary productivity, are efficient coastal blue carbon ecosystems. Aboveground biomass (AGB) is an important component of vegetation carbon pools. Thus, accurate estimation of mangrove AGB is critical for studying carbon cycle and climate change. While the practical significance and application of information obtained on mangrove AGB in China is apparent, studies of this nature in China at a national scale have rarely been reported. Remote sensing technology is convenient, efficient, has a wide observational range, and can be used for large-scale ecosystem monitoring. Canopy height is a structural parameter that is positively correlated with the AGB of vegetation. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) satellite, launched in recent years, is able to obtain vegetation canopy height. This study employed forest canopy height derived from GEDI satellite-based LiDAR and an allometric equation based on the allometric theory to estimate mangrove AGB in China in 2019, and the quantitative and spatial distribution of mangrove biomass and their main influencing factors were analyzed. The results showed that the total and mean AGB of mangroves in China in 2019 were about 1,974,827 t and 73.0 t/hm2, respectively. Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao area showed the largest total mangrove AGB, reaching 843,836 t. The mean values of AGB in each province (region) with mangrove ecosystems nationwide ranged from 53.3 to 92.1 t/hm2, of which the largest was found in Hainan Province, reaching 92.1 t/hm2. In Hainan, Taiwan, and Fujian provinces, mean mangrove AGB was higher than the national mean. Considering nature reserves, the mean AGBs of mangroves in Neilingdingdao-Futian and Mai Po mangrove nature reserves in Shenzhen Bay in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao area and Dongzhaigang mangrove nature reserve in Hainan province were relatively high, with values greater than 110 t/hm2. The accumulation and distribution of mangrove AGB in China are ...

Abstract Noncovalent sulfur interactions are ubiquitous and play important roles in medicinal chemistry and organic optoelectronic materials. Quantum chemical calculations predicted that the electrostatic potentials on the surface of the sulfur atom in organic molecules could be tuned through the through-space effects of suitable substituents. This makes it possible to design different types of noncovalent sulfur interactions. The theoretical design was further confirmed by X-ray crystallographic experiments. The sulfur atom acts as the halogen atom acceptor to form the halogen bond in the cocrystal between 2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene, whereas it acts as the chalcogen atom donor to form the chalcogen bond in the cocrystal between 2,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene.
