Abstract Objectives: This paper explores the process of gaining consent from the perspectives of people living with dementia, their relatives/carers, and service providers. This is developed based on new primary qualitative research and addresses a gap in critical reflection on the practice and ethical process of research consent.
Methods: A qualitative approach was used to conduct this research through the implementation of four focus groups run with people living with dementia (
Results: Data was analysed thematically, to identify two core themes: consent as a journey and the flexible consent approach. These identified concerns with autonomy, decision making and placing people living with dementia at the centre of the consent process. The journey of consent emerged as central to supporting participation and enhancing the consent process.
Conclusion: The paper presents new evidence about the lived experience of research consent in the field of dementia, presenting the process of collecting consent in research as a flexible process that is best supported through a growing knowledge of participants and participation sites.

Abstract Two patients underwent surgical deliveries within four months of one another at a single maternity unit. Both patients had complications of infection-like symptoms such as offensive vaginal discharge and pyrexia, months following their caesarean sections resulting in further surgery. The incidents were thought to be secondary to woven oxidised regenerated cellulose (ORC) use. ORC must be used according to its relevant product literature which can vary between brands. Surgeons must keep abreast of changes to the haemostatic material provided to them and therefore the properties of each type, especially when faced with bleeding not suitable for suturing or electrocautery.

Abstract Aim: To capture and retain healthcare staff in postgraduate courses relevant to individual career aspirations, service requirements and continuous practice development (CPD) within an English UK university.
Design: Two virtual career clinics for postgraduate practitioners to engage in CPD offers within the university. An online post-enrolment online survey to explore their experiences of engagement with the university.
Methods: Mixed: qualitative and quantitative methods. Engaging 10 participants attended the career clinics, and 42 participants with an online survey.
Results: The career clinics were well received by participants who mapped CPD requirements and individual career aspirations. The surveys exposed challenges with marketing and enrolment; however, these were mitigated with support. Four recommendations are presented within this paper applicable to the international postgraduate education of all health practitioners.

Abstract Background: Patients who are annoyed, upset, angry or uncooperative may be categorised as having behavioural problems, shifting the blame from healthcare providers to patients. This can exacerbate the problem. Adopting an empathic approach to such consultations can reduce anger and frustration and improve patient care.
Approach: A pilot teaching session was introduced to the second year of the medical degree at Leicester Medical School with the aim of preparing students to deal with difficult consultations and helping them to understand the impact of empathy in such situations. The teaching involved the use of prior reading, videos and simulated patients acting the role of angry and frustrated patients. It was delivered to groups of 8 students by a team of 20 GP tutors. Approximately 300 second year medical students took part in the session.
Evaluation: Ninety per cent of students felt they had a better understanding of how an empathic approach could help in difficult consultations. Most GP tutors also felt better prepared to deal with difficult consultations because of teaching the session. Following the initial evaluation, a co-production workshop was convened comprising of tutors, students and patient representatives to review the teaching materials and evaluation. Potential improvements to the session were identified.
Conclusion: We were able to deliver a successful pilot session that improved students' understanding of the skills needed and had a positive impact on GP tutors involved in the session. A subsequent co-production workshop identified key strategies to improve the session for future years.

Abstract Chitosan is a natural biodegradable biopolymer that has drawbacks in mechanical and antibacterial properties, limiting its usage in biological and medicinal fields. Chitosan is combined with other naturally occurring substances possessing biological antibacterial qualities in order to broaden its application. Ethanolic apricot kernel seed extract was prepared, analyzed, and incorporated into chitosan film with different concentrations (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 wt%). Furthermore, the effect of AKSE and γ-radiation (20 Gy and 20 kGy) on the physical properties of the film was studied. The prepared films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which revealed that AKSE did not cause any change in the molecular structure, whereas the γ-irradiation dose caused a decrease in the peak intensity of all concentrations except 0.75 wt%, which was the most resistant. In addition, their dielectric, optical, and antimicrobial properties were studied. Also, AKSE-enhanced optical qualities, allowed them to fully block light transmission at wavelengths of 450-600 nm. The dielectric properties, i.e., permittivity (ε'), dielectric loss (ε''), and electrical conductivity (σ), increased with increasing AKSE concentration and film irradiation. The antimicrobial studies revealed that the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Canodida albicans increased with AKSE incorporation.

Abstract Attention represents a key element of self-control, and multiple theoretical accounts have highlighted the role played by abundant attentional capacity in effecting successful self-regulation. What, then, are the consequences of living in today's world, in which attention can become so easily divided by a multitude of stimuli? In this article, we consider the implications of divided attention for self-control and show that although the end result is typically disinhibited behavior, under specified conditions, attentional limitation, or what we term attentional myopia, can be associated with enhanced restraint.
