Abstract An important aspect of an indefinite life household panel study is to provide a sample of children who become new generations of respondents over time. The representativity of children and young adults in the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey is assessed after 16 waves. Estimates from the HILDA Survey are compared to official data sources of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and include demographic, education, employment, income and residential mobility variables. Both cross-section and longitudinal estimates are assessed. Overall, the HILDA Survey estimates are relatively close to the ABS estimates with the exception of the year of arrival of recent immigrants, having foreign-born parents, having a certificate level qualification, type of relationship in household, having zero income, the main source of income, and residential mobility. Most of these exceptions can be explained by differences in questionnaire design, respondent recall error, linkage error, and differences in the amount of missing data. The estimate of particular concern is the proportion of immigrants arriving in the last five years, which is underestimated in the HILDA Survey due to undercoverage of recent immigrants. This could be addressed by regular refreshment samples of recent immigrants.

Abstract Hemophilia A and B are X-linked hereditary bleeding disorders due to factor VIII (FVIII) or factor IX (FIX) deficiency, respectively. Major advancements have been made in the care of patients with hemophilia, yet the development of inhibitors to infused FVIII or FIX continues to be a formidable challenge. The current first-line therapy for acute bleeding episodes in patients diagnosed with inhibitors are bypassing agents including activated prothrombin complex concentrates (aPCCs) and recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa). Eptacog beta (SevenFact; LFB Biotechnologies, Hema Biologics) is a new rFVIIa product produced via expression in the milk of transgenic rabbits. This emerging platform has demonstrated numerous cost advantages to traditional cell culture systems including a better ability to scale up production and better protein yields. Eptacog beta is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the on-demand control of bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia aged 12 to 75 with inhibitors. A potential future expansion of its current label could occur given the recent completion of two major phase III clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in children as well as its use for perioperative management. In this paper, we describe the preclinical and clinical literature documenting the development of eptacog beta and discuss its current and future application for the management of patients with hemophilia and inhibitors.

Abstract Food contamination is a major concern for consumers and food businesses, especially when the contaminant is an allergen. This study focused on detecting and quantifying peanut powder in garlic powder using low-cost Near-Infrared sensors (S2.0–1550–1950 nm, and S2.5–2000–2450 nm) coupled with machine learning methods. Garlic and peanut powders of three different origins were allocated to different data sets, and 37 peanut contamination concentrations from 0.01% to 20% were studied. Samples were first assessed to determine if they were contaminated with peanut. Peanut concentration was then determined to be either low (0.01–1%) or high (2–20%). Finally, the peanut concentration was predicted. Classification accuracy of 100% was achieved when assessing models on an individual data set but declined when a second independent data set was used. In general, the models developed from the S2.0 sensor performed marginally better than those developed using the S2.5. Peanut concentration prediction models achieved Correlation Coefficient and Root Mean Square Error values of 70.8%, 0.49%, and 77.5%, 3.53% for low and high peanut concentrations, respectively. The results obtained from this study can be used to develop cost-effective contamination detection technologies for the food sector.

Abstract This case discusses a man in his 20s, referred to the ear, nose and throat department with a suspected ear lobe abscess. He presented with a 5-day history of worsening ear pain, fevers and localised papules. An in-depth history showed a relevant sexual health history and medical history. Initial investigations shone no light on the cause of the infection. A second presentation with further generalised symptoms, including further outbreaks of pustules, led to PCR testing, confirming the presence of mpox (monkeypox) virus. He was admitted to the infectious disease ward where he made a good recovery and was supported until discharge.
