    Abstract As a main by-product of anaerobic digestion in biogas plants, biogas slurry contains a high concentration of mineral elements (such as ammonia‑nitrogen and potassium) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). So determining how to dispose the biogas slurry in a harmless and value-added ways is crucial from the perspective of ecological and environmental protections. This study explored a novel nexus between biogas slurry and lettuce, in which the biogas slurry was concentrated and saturated with carbon dioxide (CO₂) to serve as a hydroponic solution for lettuce growth. Meanwhile, the lettuce was used to purify the biogas slurry through removing pollutants. Results showed that when concentrating the biogas slurry, the total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen contents in the biogas slurry decreased with the increase of concentration factor. The CO₂-rich 5-time-concentrated biogas slurry (CR-5CBS) was screened as the most suitable hydroponic solution for lettuce growth after comprehensively considering the nutrient element balance, energy consumption of concentrating the biogas slurry and CO₂ absorption performance. The quality of lettuce cultivated in CR-5CBS was comparable to that of the Hoagland-Arnon nutrient solution in terms of physiological toxicity, nutritional quality, and mineral uptake. Obviously, the hydroponic lettuce could effectively utilize the nutrients in CR-5CBS to purify CR-5CBS, meeting the standard of reclaimed water quality for agricultural reuse. Interestingly, when the same yield of lettuce is targeted, using CR-5CBS as the hydroponic solution to cultivate lettuce can save about US $151/m³-CR-5CBS for lettuce production compared to the Hoagland-Arnon nutrient solution. This study might provide a feasible method for high-value utilization and harmless disposal of biogas slurry.

    Abstract To cope with the global warming caused by CO₂ concentration rising, it should be considered to supply CO₂ into plants through other suitable forms for encouraging more CO₂ uptake by plants. In this study, the physiological toxicity of CO₂-stored biogas slurry to crops and its application prospects were investigated using biogas slurry as a carrier to convert CO₂ into HCO₃⁻ for plant planting. The results showed that the physiological toxicity of biogas slurry after CO₂ absorption (i.e., CO₂-rich biogas slurry, CRBS) to rice diminishes. Compared with the biogas slurry without storing CO₂, the pH values of CRBS and the CO₂-rich 5-times concentrated biogas slurry (CR5BS) decrease significantly by 14.5% and 18.5% respectively, and the EC values increase significantly by 49.1% and 19.0%, respectively. The rice cultivated with CRBS and CR5BS have the higher root activities by 86.9% and 29.0% than the rice cultivated with biogas slurry without CO₂-storage, respectively. When using CRBS and CR5BS, the physiological toxicity of HCO₃⁻ to rice decreases, offering a favorable rhizosphere environment for rice growth. Adopting CRBS and CR5BS can promote the tillering of rice and shorten the tillering stage of rice, when compared to irrigate the biogas slurry without CO₂-storage. Similarly, compared with the rice cultivated with biogas slurry without CO₂-storage, the accumulation of nitrogen and ferrum by rice cultivated in CRBS increases by 78.2% and 26.1%, respectively. The corresponding values increase by 72.3% and 29.8% for the case adopting CR5BS.

    Abstract Objectives: Oculomotor nerve palsy is a kind of disease with many causes, showing eye movement disorders, abnormal eyelid position, and/or damage of the pupil. The etiology of oculomotor nerve palsy in different departments is different. The study discussed the etiology, localization of the lesion, and prognosis for oculomotor nerve palsy firstly diagnosed in department of ophthalmology.
    Methods: Clinical data of 137 hospitalized patients with oculomotor nerve palsy at the Department of Ophthalmology, the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from 2009 to 2018 were retrospectively collected. The etiology and its distribution characteristics in different age groups, the location of the lesion, and the prognosis of patients were analyzed.
    Results: In 137 patients, the top 3 causes for oculomotor nerve palsy were head trauma (38.69%), cavernous sinus lesions (12.40%), and orbital inflammation (9.49%). Other causes included intracranial aneurysm, the intracranial space-occupying lesion, cerebral vessel diseases, infection, orbital tumors, diabetes, the operation of nasal cavity. Traumatic oculomotor nerve palsy was more common in young adults aged 20-49 years and in the patients with cerebral vascular disease in elderly people aged 60-69 years, while diabetic oculomotor nerve palsy is common in middle-aged and elderly people aged 50-69 years. The age distribution of other etiological types was relatively balanced. Seventy-five cases of orbital apex lesions were due to trauma, inflammation, infection, and tumor; 40 cases of cavernous sinus lesions were due to inflammation, tumor, and thrombosis; 6 cases of subarachnoid lesions were due to aneurysms, tumors, and trauma; 5 cases were oculomotor nucleus lesions were due to infarction; 11 cases could not be allocated because of unknown etiology. After treatment, the corrected visual acuity of oculomotor nerve palsy side was not significantly improved. The patients with oculomotor nerve palsy caused by intracranial aneurysm, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus had the highest proportion of partial or complete recovery from ptosis and ocular dyskinesia.
    Conclusions: Oculomotor nerve palsy is a common cause of ophthalmoplegia and diplopia. Head trauma, cavernous sinus lesions, and orbital inflammation are the most common causes for oculomotor nerve palsy first diagnosed in ophthalmology department. Traumatic oculomotor nerve palsy is common in adolescents. Oculomotor nerve palsy caused by diabetes and cerebrovascular disease are common in the middle-aged and elderly people. Most of the lesions locate in the orbital apex and cavernous sinus. The prognosis of corrected visual acuity is poor. The prognosis of ptosis and ocular dyskinesia caused by intracranial aneurysm, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes is good. Figuring out the cause timely and accurately is the basis and key to treat oculomotor nerve palsy.

    Abstract Aim: To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QOL) in patients with atypical optic neuritis through the 39-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-39).
    Methods: Fifty-seven patients with atypical optic neuritis were scheduled in the research unit from June 1 to December 31, 2019. Besides collecting the clinical data, NEI VFQ-39, the Chinese version, was applied to all subjects. The NEI VFQ-39 subscale item scores were compared among subgroups divided by different classifications, and a correlation analysis of the NEI VFQ-39 scores and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for better-seeing and worse-seeing eyes was performed.
    Results: The mean age of scheduled patients was 34.3 ± 12.4 years, with the majority being female (70.2%). The mean composite score was 58.62 ± 17.62. Twenty-nine (50.9%) patients were affected binocularly, and the most subscale scores and composite scores of binocular incidences were lower than those of monocular incidence significantly. However, there was no statistically significant difference in composite scores between patients with and without periocular pain. The patients with worse BCVA in the better-seeing eye have lower scores than those with better BCVA in the better-seeing eye. Most NEI VFQ-39 scores have strong correlations with the BCVA for better-seeing and worse-seeing eyes.
    Conclusion: Atypical optic neuritis has a significant and comprehensive influence on patients' visual function outcomes and quality of life associated with vision. Improving their BCVA in the better-seeing eye can improve their vision-related QOL.

    Abstract Optic neuritis (ON) refers to inflammatory demyelinating lesions of the optic nerve, which can cause acute or subacute vision loss and is a major cause of vision loss in young adults. Much of our understanding of typical ON is from the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial. Glial autoantibodies to aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin (AQP4-IgG) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin (MOG-IgG) are recently established biomarkers of ON that have revolutionized our understanding of atypical ON. The detection of glial antibodies is helpful in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with different types of ON. AQP4-IgG and MOG-IgG screening is strongly recommended for patients with atypical ON. Research on the pathogenesis of NMOSD and MOGAD will promote the development and marketing of targeted immunotherapies. The application of new and efficient drugs, such as the selective complement C5 inhibitor, IL-6 receptor inhibitor, B cell-depleting agents, and drugs against other monoclonal antibodies, provides additional medical evidence. This review provides information on the diagnosis and management of glial antibody-mediated ON.

    Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate pain and radiological features of different types of first-episode demyelinating optic neuritis (ON).
    Methods: Eighty-three patients presenting with first-episode aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody-associated ON (AQP4-ON;
    Results: 24 AQP4-ON patients (85.75%), 23 MOG-ON patients (88.5%) and 24 IDON patients (82.8%) suffered from ON-associated pain. MOG-ON had mostly retro-orbital pain; AQP4-ON and IDON had mostly neuropathic pain. In addition, pain was more severe in AQP4ON patients than in other ON patients. In MRI, bilateral involvement was more common in AQP4-ON than IDON (26.9 and 3.7%); radiological optic nerve head swelling was more common in MOG-ON than in AQP4-ON and IDON (68.0 vs. 23.1 vs. 25.9%). MRI lesion in peri-optic nerve sheath was more common in AQP4-ON (53.8 vs. 16.0 vs. 3.7%). In 70 patients with ON-associated pain, gadolinium enhancement of orbital optic nerve was most common in MOG-ON patients (82.4 vs. 55.0 vs. 33.3%,
    Conclusion: Pain is a common symptom in patients with all types of demyelinating ON. AQP4-ON is frequently associated with severe ON-associated pain and longitudinally extensive optic nerve inflammatory lesions. Intra-orbital and peri-optic inflammation were more frequently observed in patients with MOG-ON, which was closely related to optic disc swelling and retro-orbital pain provoked by eye movements.

    Abstract Purpose: As glial autoantibody testing is not yet available in some areas of the world, an alternative approach is to use clinical indicators to predict which subtypes of middle-aged and elderly-onset optic neuritis (ON) have manifested.
    Method: This study was a single-center hospital-based retrospective cohort study. Middle-aged and elderly-onset ON patients (age > 45 years) who had experienced the first episode of ON were included in this cohort. Single- and multi-parametric diagnostic factors for middle-aged and elderly-onset myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin-associated ON (MOG-ON) and aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin-related ON (AQP4-ON) were calculated.
    Results: From January 2016 to January 2020, there were 81 patients with middle-aged and elderly-onset ON, including 32 (39.5%) AQP4-ON cases, 19 (23.5%) MOG-ON cases, and 30 (37.0%) Seronegative-ON cases. Bilateral involvement (47.4%,
    Conclusion: Based on our cohort study of middle-aged and elderly-onset ON, MOG-ON is less prevalent than AQP4-ON and Seronegative-ON. Using multiple combined parameters improves the sensitivity and negative predictive value for diagnosing middle-aged and elderly-onset MOG-ON and AQP4-ON. These combined parameters can help physicians identify and treat middle-aged and elderly-onset ON early when glial autoantibody status is not available.
