Abstract Problematic Internet use is increasingly prevalent among college students and is associated with psychosocial impairments. Cognitive-behavioral intervention has been widely used in addressing addictive behaviors, and is shown to be a promising approach for problematic Internet use. This study presented a brief cognitive-behavioral group intervention developed to reduce problematic Internet use through modifying maladaptive cognitions and coping and enhancing self-regulation. This pilot study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effect of this adapted intervention with six Chinese college students who had problems with Internet use via smartphones. Important issues including conceptualization of the treatment model, feasibility and acceptability of the intervention protocol, and promising therapeutic benefits were reported and discussed. Findings on the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcome of this intervention may be informative to investigators planning similar studies. This study provides useful guidance to clinicians concerning cognitive-behavioral group intervention to address problematic Internet use among university students in China.

Abstract Chinese higher education institutions have adopted a US-style tenure track system since the 1990s. This is an important reform aimed at modernizing China's higher education system. In response, authors have begun to carry out close examination of the career system and analyse its implications in a national context (Republic of China). This study aims to present the key research themes, identify research gaps and offer recommendations from the increasing pool of Chinese-language literature on the tenure track system. A scoping review of Chinese language papers was conducted using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (including the China Academic Journals Full-text Database, China Core Newspapers Full-text Database, China Doctoral Dissertations Full-text Database, China Masters' Thesis Full-text Database, and China Yearbooks Full-text Database) (CNKI) database. Four major research themes were identified in Chinese discourse: (1) examining the tenure track system, (2) providing suggestions for better adaptation of the tenure track system in the Chinese context, (3) analysing the negative effects of the tenure track system, and (4) analysing the positive effects of the tenure track system. Generally, authors were concerned with the adaptation and cultivation of the US-originated tenure track system in the Chinese context and emphasized the importance of acknowledging its perceived negative influences on early-career scholars who have not received adequate attention. Overall, the authors demonstrate increasing interest in the tenure track system in China, and the literature is of variable quality. Further empirical studies are needed to analyse, evaluate and guide future improvement of the career system in the Chinese context in practice.

Abstract Generating realistic 3D human motion has been a fundamental goal of the game/animation industry. This work presents a novel transition generation technique that can bridge the actions of people in the foreground by generating 3D poses and shapes in-between photos, allowing 3D animators/novice users to easily create/edit 3D motions. To achieve this, we propose an adaptive motion network (ADAM-Net) that effectively learns human motion from masked action sequences to generate kinematically compliant 3D poses and shapes in-between given temporally-sparse photos. Three core learning designs underpin ADAM-Net. First, we introduce a random masking process that randomly masks images from an action sequence and fills masked regions in latent space by interpolation of unmasked images to simulate various transitions under given temporally-sparse photos. Second, we propose a long-range adaptive motion (L-ADAM) attention module that leverages visual cues observed from human motion to adaptively recalibrate the range that needs attention in a sequence, along with a multi-head cross-attention. Third, we develop a short-range adaptive motion (S-ADAM) attention module that weightedly selects and integrates adjacent feature representations at different levels to strengthen temporal correlation. By coupling these designs, the results demonstrate that ADAM-Net excels not only in generating 3D poses and shapes in-between photos, but also in classic 3D human pose and shape estimation.

Abstract In recent years, the incidence of autistic children has shown rapid growth worldwide. The rapid development of education and rehabilitation institutions for autistic children is of great significance to the rehabilitation of this group. However, the research on indoor space environments and functional facilities for autistic children in China is still in its infancy. Reasonably and effectively, zoning the education and rehabilitation space for autistic children can promote better communication and learning between autistic children and rehabilitation therapists and effectively promote the rehabilitation progress of autistic children. However, the existing education and rehabilitation space for autistic children has some problems, such as unscientific indoor partition, indoor space layouts mainly relying on manual work, heavy workload and low efficiency. Therefore, it is of great research value and practical significance to explore the intuitive design and optimization of the education and rehabilitation space layout for autistic children. This study first evaluates and optimizes the educational space for autistic children based on the affordability theory. Then, this study proposes a layout recommendation algorithm based on deep learning, which is used to improve the layout efficiency of the education and rehabilitation space for autistic children and realize real-time online layout. The scene information is digitized in binary code. The segmentation and layout network models are constructed through bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) to discover the long segment pre-segmentation of house type and obtain the layout results. The word embedding algorithm is used to abstract the cross features between each vector segment, and the dimension of the feature matrix is reduced to improve the speed and accuracy of the layout scheme recommendation. The experimental results show that our method can learn the design rules from the data set and has achieved better results than the existing methods. This study ...

Abstract This study examines the role of graffiti as a medium in urban spaces, particularly in the context of Macau. Graffiti, seen as a form of artistic expression, has the potential to invigorate and enliven public spaces. Utilizing visual ethnography methods and analyzing cultural policies, the paper aims to examine the presence of graffiti in various neighborhoods within Macau. The concept of nostalgia also serves as a theoretical framework to understand how graffiti can evoke memories and create an emotional connection to the past. By investigating hotspots like Largo do Estaleiro, Rua de S. Tiago da Barra, and the vicinity surrounding Ruins of St. Paul’s through interviews with residents and an examination of distribution patterns, we aim to comprehend how these graffiti sites can establish a link to history and contribute to a shared memory and sense of locality. The findings of this research have important implications for urban planning and cultural policy in Macau, as they highlight the significance of incorporating graffiti as a legitimate form of public art that can contribute to the cultural identity and sense of nostalgia in urban spaces.

Plant height and nutrient level determine the diet selection of wintering geese in Poyang Lake, a Ramsar wetland

Abstract In Poyang Lake, the largest and one of the most important wintering sites in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, Carex (Carex cinerascens Kük) meadows provide the primary food source for the wintering geese. However, due to intensified river regulation and more frequent extreme climatic events such as drought, observational evidence suggests that the synchrony of geese migration and Carex phenology could not be maintained without human interventions, imposing a great risk of food shortage during the wintering period. Consequently, the current conservation priority in this Ramsar site is shifted to wet meadow improvement to ensure optimal food quality. Understanding the food preferences of wintering geese is the key for effective wet meadow management. As the growth stage and nutrient level of food plants are the decisive factors influencing the diet selection of herbivores, in this study, we sampled the preferred food items by tracking the foraging paths of the Greater White-fronted Goose (n = 84) and Bean Goose (n = 34) to quantify the “foraging window” in terms of plant height, protein level, and energy content. Further, we established relationships between the above three variables of Carex based on in-situ measurements. The results show that the geese prefer plants with height ranging from 2.4 to 25.0 cm, with protein content from 13.9 to 25.2 %, and energy content from 1440.0 to 1813.6 KJ/100 g. While plant energy content increases with height, the height-protein level relationship is negative. The opposite growth curves signify a conservation challenge to maintain the delicate balance between the quantity and quality requirements of wintering geese. Carex meadow management, such as mowing, should focus on optimizing the timing of action to maximize energy supply while maintaining the right protein level for the long-term fitness, reproduction and survival of the birds.
