Abstract In order to explore bilingual development appropriately, it is essential to understand the relationship between second language acquisition (SLA) and bilingualism. Through the review of relevant studies, the connected concepts of bilingualism and SLA are differentiated in this paper to discuss the relationship between the two fields. The distinctions between the two fields are reflected in their definitions, theoretical orientations, and terminology. Due to the lack of a clear understanding of the differences between the SLA and bilingualism, issues regarding the terms researchers use in their research have arisen, and plausible explanations are also discussed. Accordingly, scholars, especially those in the field of bilingualism, are suggested to enter into an agreement concerning the terminology used in research articles.

Abstract A G-quadruplex (G4) is a typical non-B DNA structure and involved in various DNA-templated events in eukaryotic genomes. PEG and PDS chemicals have been widely applied for promoting the folding of in vivo or in vitro G4s. However, how PEG and PDS preferentially affect a subset of G4 formation genome-wide is still largely unknown. We here conducted a BG4-based IP-seq in vitro under K + +PEG or K + +PDS conditions in the rice genome. We found that PEG-favored IP-G4s + have distinct sequence features, distinct genomic distributions and distinct associations with TEGs, non-TEGs and subtypes of TEs compared to PDS-favored ones. Strikingly, PEG-specific IP-G4s + are associated with euchromatin with less enrichment levels of DNA methylation but with more enriched active histone marks, while PDS-specific IP-G4s + are associated with heterochromatin with higher enrichment levels of DNA methylation and repressive marks. Moreover, we found that genes with PEG-specific IP-G4s + are more expressed than those with PDS-specific IP-G4s + , suggesting that PEG/PDS-specific IP-G4s + alone or coordinating with epigenetic marks are involved in the regulation of the differential expression of related genes, therefore functioning in distinct biological processes. Thus, our study provides new insights into differential impacts of PEG and PDS on G4 formation, thereby advancing our understanding of G4 biology.

Abstract The objective of this study is to verify the feasibility of using biochar made from crop straw as a bitumen additive to improve some properties of bitumen. The differences between crop straw biochar prepared in a laboratory and commercial charcoal were investigated through scanning electron microscopy and laser particle size analyses. Furthermore, biochar-modified asphalt was prepared using the high-speed shear method, and the penetration, softening point, ductility at 15°C, and apparent viscosity of the asphalt binder with 6% biochar were measured at 120, 135, 150, 160, and 175°C. It was found that both the crop straw biochar and the commercial charcoal consist mainly of C, O, Si, and K, but the C content of crop straw biochar is slightly higher than that of commercial charcoal. The particle size of biochar is smaller than that of commercial charcoal, while the specific surface area is larger. It was determined that the addition of crop straw biochar significantly improved the high-temperature performance of asphalt, and that biochar and commercial charcoal have a similar influence on the high temperature performance of asphalt.

Abstract As one of the important ways to cultivate internationalized and highly competitive talents, Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools (CFCRS) is very significant to education for sustainable development (ESD). From the perspective of ESD, we developed a teaching quality evaluation model using 18 indicators in 4 dimensions: resource input, faculty environment, teaching process, and teaching outcome. The DANP (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory-Based Analytic Network Process) method is used to explore the mutual influence relationship of teaching quality in CFCRS, and the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) method is used in this empirical study. The results show that the evaluation dimensions listed by impact level from big to small are as follows: teaching outcome, teaching process, faculty environment, and resource input. Among them, resource input and faculty environment are the cause dimensions, while teaching process and teaching outcome are the result dimensions. Academic support is the most influential indicator, followed by teaching resource and teaching management, and the teacher’s nationality is the least influential indicator. The CFCRS A of a comprehensive university in the developed region of China has the highest comprehensive score, followed by the CFCRS C of an applied science and technology university and CFCRS B of a comprehensive university in the underdeveloped region. The teaching quality of CFCRS can be improved by increasing the frequency of academic activities, strengthening teacher training, reinforcing curriculum and discipline management, and encouraging students to participate in competitions and paper publications.

Abstract To investigate the distribution and genetic variation in four vertically transmitted duck pathogens, including duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV), duck circovirus (DuCV), duck hepatitis A virus 3 (DHAV-3), and avian reoviruses (ARV), we conducted an epidemiology study using PCR and RT-PCR assays on a duck population. We found that DHBV was the most prevalent virus (69.74%), followed by DuCV (39.48%), and then ARV (19.92%) and DHAV-3 (8.49%). Among the 271 duck samples, two, three or four viruses were detected in the same samples, indicating that the coinfection of vertical transmission agents is common in ducks. The genetic analysis results showed that all four identified DuCV strains belonged to genotype 1, the DHAV-3 strain was closely clustered with previously identified strains from China, and the ARV stain was clustered under genotype 1. These indicate that different viral strains are circulating among the ducks. Our findings will improve the knowledge of the evolution of DuCV, DHAV-3, and ARV, and help choose suitable strains for vaccination.

Abstract In this article, we study the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of a Kirchhoff type equation on a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^3$, and we show that the number of positive solutions of the equation depends on the topological properties of the domain. The technique is based on Ljusternik-Schnirelmann category and Morse theory.

Abstract Under the background of big data, citizens can freely access and use open data to create value through the open government data platform (OGDP). The sustainable use of OGDP can meet the needs of citizens. The value created by citizens can also improve quality of life, which is of great significance to the sustainable development of society. From the citizens’ perspective, we constructed an evaluation model of citizens’ sustainable use of OGDP, including 12 indicators in four dimensions: Data, platform, outcome, and citizen. We have built the complete evaluation system with the DANP (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory-Based Analytic Network Process) method. It explores the main influencing factors and mutual influence of citizens’ sustainable use of OGDP. Empirical research is done on four provincial OGDPs in China’s Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guizhou, and Fujian provinces. The TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) method was used to rank the OGDPs in four pilot areas in empirical research. The results demonstrate that the improvement priorities of dimensions have the following order: Citizen, outcome, data, and platform, in which data and platform are cause dimensions, and outcome and citizen are result dimensions. The satisfaction indicator has the highest weight among all evaluation indicators, followed by the quality and quantity of outcomes. The one with the lowest weight is non-discrimination. The empirical results show that the OGDP in Zhejiang ranks the highest overall, followed by the OGDPs of Shanghai, Fujian, and Guizhou provinces. In the outcome and citizen dimensions, Zhejiang provincial OGDP does the best. Fujian provincial OGDP does the best in the platform dimension. The citizens’ sustainable use of OGDP can be promoted by timely opening of data that citizens need urgently, perfecting the policy of privacy protection and user guide of OGDP, holding open data innovation competition, providing data visualization function, providing various download formats ...

Abstract Theoretical modeling is a popular method for quantitative analysis and performance prediction of computer systems, including cloud systems. Low entropy cloud (i.e., low interference among workloads and low system jitter) is becoming a new trend, where the Labeled Network Stack (LNS) based server is a good case to gain orders of magnitude performance improvement compared to servers based on traditional network stacks. However, it is desirable to figure out 1) where the low tail latency and the low entropy of LNS mainly come from, compared with mTCP, a typical user-space network stack in academia, and Linux network stack, the mainstream network stack in industry, and 2) how much LNS can be further optimized. Therefore, we propose a queueing theory-based analytical method defining a bottleneck stage to simplify the quantitative analysis of tail latency. Facilitated by the analytical method, we establish models characterizing the change of processing speed in different stages for an LNS-based server, an mTCP-based server, and a Linux-based server, with bursty traffic as an example. Under such traffic, each network service stage's processing speed is obtained by non-intrusive basic tests to identify the slowest stage as the bottleneck according to traffic and system characteristics. Our models reveal that the full-datapath prioritized processing and the full-path zero-copy are primary sources of the low tail latency and the low entropy of the LNS-based server, with 0.8%-24.4% error for the [Formula: see text] percentile latency. In addition, the model of the LNS-based server can give the best number of worker threads querying a database, improving 2.1[Formula: see text]-3.5[Formula: see text] in concurrency.

Abstract The biological production of levan by levansucrase (LS, EC 2.4.1.10) has aroused great interest in the past few years. Previously, we identified a thermostable levansucrase from Celerinatantimonas diazotrophica (Cedi-LS). A novel thermostable LS from Pseudomonas orientalis (Psor-LS) was successfully screened using the Cedi-LS template. The Psor-LS showed maximum activity at 65 °C, much higher than the other LSs. However, these two thermostable LSs showed significantly different product specificity. When the temperature was decreased from 65 to 35 °C, Cedi-LS tended to produce high-molecular-weight (HMW) levan. By contrast, Psor-LS prefers to generate fructooligosaccharides (FOSs, DP ≤ 16) rather than HMW levan under the same conditions. Notably, at 65 °C, Psor-LS would produce HMW levan with an average M w of 1.4 × 10 6 Da, indicating that a high temperature might favor the accumulation of HMW levan. In summary, this study allows a thermostable LS suitable for HMW levan and levan-type FOSs production simultaneously.

Abstract Hemiarthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty are routinely performed procedures. A comparison of these procedures in tumor patients can be performed based on complications and functional outcomes. To weigh the advantages and disadvantages of both procedures, a comparative study is indeed required to decide which procedure is more beneficial for primary bone tumor patients. The outcomes of proximal femur tumor-resected patients were collected from research reports from PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Google Scholar until 30 December 2022. Differences between these two operative procedures in primary bone tumors patients were analyzed based on dislocation, infection, local recurrence, MSTS, and HHS. Six articles were included according to the selection criteria with a total of 360 patients. Our results showed that there was a significant difference in our primary outcome as hemiarthroplasty participants encountered less dislocation than those with total hip arthroplasty. Moreover, the secondary outcomes of our study were similar. Proximal femur bone tumors, when resected, tend to produce more complications and decrease functional ability due to extensive tumor extension and soft tissue involvement. The lower dislocation rate in hemiarthroplasty participants emphasizes the importance of preserving the acetabular head in hemiarthroplasty as a key to preventing dislocation.
