Abstract The only document we have by a 13th-century architect, the Album of Villard de Honnecourt has been the subject of writings by art and architectural historians since the 19th century and has been considered the work of an amateur since the 1970s. Jean Wirth sheds new light on the question, based on a philological study of the manuscript, and proves that Villard himself is the author of the technical drawings relating to construction. He goes on to provide convincing analyses of the art of drawing and its numerous applications, from drawing from nature to architectural plans. Drawings relating to engineering, geometry and stereotomy are treated individually, in order to convey as clearly as possible the technical processes they illustrate. An examination of the architect's travels, the monuments he saw and his stylistic evolution allows for an accurate, corrected chronology of this work, previously considered outdated. This intelligent and detailed study will be a landmark in the rehabilitation of Villard de Honnecourt's reputation

Abstract Over the past 20 years, our knowledge of virus diversity and abundance in subsurface environments has expanded dramatically through application of quantitative metagenomic approaches. In most subsurface environments, viral diversity and abundance rival viral diversity and abundance observed in surface environments. Most of these viruses are uncharacterized in terms of their hosts and replication cycles. Analysis of accessory metabolic genes encoded by subsurface viruses indicates that they evolved to replicate within the unique features of their environments. The key question remains: What role do these viruses play in the ecology and evolution of the environments in which they replicate? Undoubtedly, as more virologists examine the role of viruses in subsurface environments, new insights will emerge.

Abstract Even if the term is not a uniform one and is characterized by different disciplines, the use of (mostly computer-supported) devices and media for analyzing, designing and/or supporting teaching and learning processes can be subsumed under Educational Technologies. Educational technologies are very diverse and can be used on the levels of individual or collaborative learning, teaching, and even school organization. Despite efforts to build a technical infrastructure in schools, national educational monitoring indicates that the perceived ease of use of educational technologies has not increased as a result. The articles in this issue also illustrate the diversity of educational technologies. This diversity is accompanied by the fact that the conditions under which the respective technology unfolds the desired benefit are very heterogeneous and generalizable statements on the successful use of educational technologies can only be formulated with difficulty. Nevertheless, research efforts in the field of educational technologies seem to be worthwhile in order to exploit their potential for pedagogical and teaching processes.

Abstract Background/objectives: Sleep quality is a critical factor for daytime functioning and chronic disease risk. We investigated the association between intakes of total protein and protein subtypes and sleep quality in three U.S. cohorts.
Subjects/methods: In the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), NHS2, and Health Professionals Follow-up study (HPFS), dietary intake was assessed every 4 years using validated food frequency questionnaires. Sleep quality was measured once with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index or adapted versions. With ordinal logistic regression, odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to estimate the odds of having better sleep quality versus poorer sleep quality depending on protein intake (%Energy) based on the average of the prior two dietary questionnaires.
Results: In 32,212 women from NHS, 51,126 women from NHS2, and 14,796 men from HPFS, total protein intake was not associated with sleep quality. However, the intake of protein from vegetable sources showed no association or a positive association with sleep quality (OR for quartile 4 versus quartile 1 in NHS: 1.12, 1.04-1.20, P-trend < 0.001; NHS2: 1.01, 0.95-1.07, P-trend = 0.90; HPFS: 1.11, 0.99-1.23, P-trend = 0.05), whereas divergent results were observed for animal protein sources. Overall, intakes of processed red meat and poultry were associated with worse sleep quality, whereas no or positive associations were observed for dairy and fish protein.
Conclusion: Our results suggest that plants as a source of protein may be associated with better sleep quality than animal sources of protein. Further studies are warranted to validate our findings.

Abstract We present ASR Bundestag, a dataset for automatic speech recognition in German, consisting of 610 hours of aligned audio-transcript pairs for supervised training as well as 1,038 hours of unlabeled audio snippets for self-supervised learning, based on raw audio data and transcriptions from plenary sessions and committee meetings of the German parliament. In addition, we discuss utilized approaches for the automated creation of speech datasets and assess the quality of the resulting dataset based on evaluations and finetuning of a pre-trained state of the art model. We make the dataset publicly available, including all subsets.

Abstract Large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant attention, but the definition of "large" lacks clarity. This paper focuses on medium-sized language models (MLMs), defined as having at least six billion parameters but less than 100 billion. The study evaluates MLMs regarding zero-shot generative question answering, which requires models to provide elaborate answers without external document retrieval. The paper introduces an own test dataset and presents results from human evaluation. Results show that combining the best answers from different MLMs yielded an overall correct answer rate of 82.7% which is better than the 60.9% of ChatGPT. The best MLM achieved 71.8% and has 33B parameters, which highlights the importance of using appropriate training data for fine-tuning rather than solely relying on the number of parameters. More fine-grained feedback should be used to further improve the quality of answers. The open source community is quickly closing the gap to the best commercial models.

Abstract Regarding the redundancy effect in multimedia learning environments, more consistency is needed in the theoretical assumptions and investigation of this effect. Current research lacks a comprehensive account of different redundant scenarios in which materials facilitate or inhibit learning and provides little conceptual guidance on how learning processes are affected by different types of redundancy. Theoretical assumptions refer to redundancy as a contentual overlap of information provided by the learning material; in this case, processing duplicated information strains the learners' limited cognitive capacities. Other assumptions refer to the role of processing limitations in working memory channels, including separate processing for visual and verbal information. In this case, an ineffective combination of sources leads to an overload of the limited working memory capacity. This paper reviews empirical research on the redundancy effect (63 studies) and classifies two types of redundancy: (1)

Abstract Genetic disorders are common in dogs and in the media it is reported that genetic disorders are more frequent in pedigree dogs than in look-a-likes or in mixed-breed dogs. Here, we consider pedigree dogs as purebred dogs (i.e. matching a breed-specific morphology) with a registered and certified pedigree, whereas look-a-likes dogs are dogs without a certification. Thus, look-a-likes may be non-pure bred or purebred but lacking the supporting evidence. Dutch experts have indicated that more than 40 percent of purebred dogs in the Netherlands suffer from genetic disorders. Uncertainty about the validity of such indications, and if pedigree dogs are at increased risk of genetic disorders, together with societal concerns about the well-being of (pedigree) dogs, incited a Wageningen UR Science Shop project commissioned by the Dutch animal protection foundation Dier&Recht. Genetic disorders are heterogeneous in aetiology and manifestations across dog breeds, which complicates studying them. One feasible approach is to study specific disorders in pre-selected breeds only, as a model for the complex reality. This report, as part of this project’s products, provides a scientific literature overview on prevalence data for two genetic disorders (hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia) in the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler in various countries including the Netherlands. The prevalence data assembled and compared in this study are based on results of screening programs published from national and international Kennel Clubs and Veterinarian Associations. In both breeds, the disease prevalence for hip dysplasia (HD), ranging from 10-46% in European and non -European countries, was remarkably variable, with a substantial proportion of the population at risk in, for example, Finland (33-46%). In the Netherlands, the prevalence for HD reported for both breeds (10-18%) was intermediate compared to that in other European countries (8-46%). Different methodology and scoring systems for HD are used in screening programs, whereas ...
