Abstract We report a reduction in motion for suspended seismic-isolation platforms in a gravitational wave detector prototype facility. We sense the distance between two seismic-isolation platforms with a suspension platform interferometer and the angular motion with two optical levers. Feedback control loops reduce the length changes between two platforms separated by [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text], and the angular motion of each platform is reduced to [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text]. As a result, the length fluctuations in a suspended optical resonator on top of the platforms is reduced by three orders of magnitude. This result is of direct relevance to gravitational wave detectors that use similar suspended optics and seismic isolation platforms.

Abstract High precision interferometers such as gravitational-wave detectors require complex seismic isolation systems in order to decouple the experiment from unwanted ground motion. Improved inertial sensors for active isolation potentially enhance the sensitivity of existing and future gravitational-wave detectors, especially below 30 Hz, and thereby increase the range of detectable astrophysical signals. This paper presents a vertical inertial sensor which senses the relative motion between an inertial test mass suspended by a blade spring and a seismically isolated platform. An interferometric readout was used which introduces low sensing noise, and preserves a large dynamic range due to fringe-counting. The expected sensitivity is comparable to other state-of-the-art interferometric inertial sensors and reaches values of $10^{-10}\,\text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 100 mHz and $10^{-12}\,\text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz. The potential sensitivity improvement compared to commercial L-4C geophones is shown to be about two orders of magnitude at 10 mHz and 100 mHz and one order of magnitude at 1 Hz. The noise performance is expected to be limited by thermal noise of the inertial test mass suspension below 10 Hz. Further performance limitations of the sensor, such as tilt-to-vertical coupling from a non-perfect levelling of the test mass and nonlinearities in the interferometric readout, are also quantified and discussed.

Abstract Background: Both atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and vasopressin (VP) influence alcohol intake and withdrawal as well as craving and are also regulated by epigenetic factors. Disturbances in expression and promoter methylation status have been described in patients suffering from alcohol use disorder and alcohol withdrawal therapy.
Objectives: In this study, we wanted to map the progression of cytosine-phosphatidyl-guanine (CpG) methylation of the respective gene promoter of ANP and VP immediately after starting alcohol withdrawal therapy when compared with healthy controls METHODS: We recruited 34 males suffering from alcohol addiction or harmful use alongside 43 healthy male controls. Blood samples for methylation analyses were drawn on days 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7-10.
Results: There was no difference in mean methylation for both VP and ANP during withdrawal. There was no difference at the ANP CpG-sites after correction for multiple testing. Regarding VP, methylation was significantly higher at CpG 033, CpG 064, CpG 103, CpG 118, and CpG 194 and significantly lower at CpG 053, CpG 060, and CpG 214 when compared to healthy controls. Via in silico analysis, we identified transcription factor binding sites that could potentially influence methylation-dependent gene transcription.
Conclusions: While there was no change in methylation status during withdrawal, significant differences in average methylation of specific CpG sites were observed for VP. We also identified the role of transcription factors in the context of promoter methylation as one potential mechanism that could explain the differences in VP levels between alcohol-dependent patients and healthy controls.

Abstract Precision interferometry is the leading method for extremely sensitive measurements in gravitational wave astronomy. Thermal noise of dielectric coatings poses a limitation to the sensitivity of these interferometers. To decrease coating thermal noise, new crystalline GaAs/AlGaAs multilayer mirrors have been developed. To date, the surface figure and thickness uniformity of these alternative low-loss coatings has not been investigated. Surface figure errors, for example, cause small angle scattering and thereby limit the sensitivity of an interferometer. Here we measure the surface figure of highly reflective, substrate-transferred, crystalline GaAs/AlGaAs coatings with a custom scanning reflectance system. We exploit the fact that the reflectivity varies with the thickness of the coating. To increase penetration into the coating, we used a 1550 nm laser on a highly reflective coating designed for a center wavelength of 1064 nm. The RMS thickness variation of a two inch optic was measured to be 0.41 ± 0.05 nm. This result is within 10% of the thickness uniformity, of 0.37 nm RMS, achieved with ion-beam sputtered coatings for the aLIGO detector. We additionally measured a lower limit of the laser induced damage threshold of 64 MW/cm

Abstract In this paper, the sensor noise of two geophone configurations (L-22D and L-4C geophones from Sercel with custom built amplifiers) was measured by performing two huddle tests. It is shown that the accuracy of the results can be significantly improved by performing the huddle test in a seismically quiet environment and by using a large number of reference sensors to remove the seismic foreground signal from the data. Using these two techniques, the measured sensor noise of the two geophone configurations matched the calculated predictions remarkably well in the bandwidth of interest (0.01 Hz-100 Hz). Low noise operational amplifiers OPA188 were utilized to amplify the L-4C geophone to give a sensor that was characterized to be near Johnson noise limited in the bandwidth of interest with a noise value of 10
