    Abstract Abstract The linear relationship between two stable water isotopes (δD and δ18O) has been used to examine the physical processes and movements or changes of three water phases (water vapor, liquid water and ice), including deuterium excess. The ordinary least squares (OLS) method has been the most commonly used method to fit the linear relationship between two isotopic compositions of water. However, an alternative method, the total least squares (TLS) method, has been proposed because it considers the presence of errors in the explanatory variable (horizontal axis, δ18O). However, not many studies have examined the differences of the relationship using two stable isotopes between the OLS and TLS for various types of water. In this work, these two methods were compared using isotopic compositions of three types of water (Antarctic snow, water vapor and summer and winter rainfall). Statistically, the slopes and intercepts obtained by the two linear regression methods were not significantly different except for summer rainfall, which has the smallest coefficient of variations (R 2). The TLS method produced larger slopes than the OLS method and the degrees of difference between the two methods were greater when the coefficient of variation was lower. In addition, with a Monte Carlo method, we showed that the differences between the two methods increased as the uncertainty increased. Moreover, the results of Bayesian linear regression were consistent with the two linear regressions. Although the TLS method is theoretically more suited to the linear regression for the stable water isotopes than the OLS method is, the application of the widely used OLS method can be recommended in the case of small measurements uncertainties after testing whether the linear parameters, slopes and intercepts, derived from the two methods are statistically significant different.

    Abstract Our understanding of cross-disciplinary connections for Antarctica’s role in the Earth system remains incomplete, especially around its coastal margins. The focus here is on sea-ice, oceanic, and atmospheric drivers in the joint Ross Sea-far East Antarctic Region (RSfEAR)—one which spans a large longitudinal range and connects a number of ice shelves and polynyas promoting sea-ice growth and underpinning a diverse and rich ecosystem. Here, we present a minireview of recent case studies and how these inform the design for a future integrated ocean–sea ice–atmosphere observing system. The review is built around five themes: i) regional setting, ii) recent studies in the region and current strategies, iii) gap analysis, iv) future observing system design, and v) wider implications for stakeholders.

    Abstract Global mean sea level rise, driven by ice mass loss in Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets (AIS and GrIS), is a significant consequence of global warming. Although various ice sheet models have attempted to predict the ice mass balance and subsequent sea level changes, non-trivial disagreements between models exist. In this study, we employ an empirical approach to estimate the future (2050) ice mass changes for both ice sheets, assuming their historical patterns of ice dynamics would persist in the coming decades. To achieve this, we estimate decadal-scale ice discharge variations by subtracting the surface mass balance (SMB) from the observed ice mass changes and extrapolate linear trend and acceleration components of ice discharges up to 2050. We also consider future SMB data from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 models to estimate net ice mass balance. Our estimates suggest that from 2021 to 2050, the global sea level rise due to AIS and GrIS ranges between 6–19 mm and 15–31 mm, respectively. Additionally, we investigate regional sea level variability resulting from geoid changes induced by ice mass changes in both regions, highlighting that heterogeneous sea level changes may cause more pronounced sea level rises in lower latitude regions, where major cities are located.

    Abstract Financial technology has become an important part of the banking industry in recent times. This study attempts to propose a framework to identify emerging areas and trends using financial business method patents. Based on the abstracts of financial business method patents registered at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, this study first applies latent Dirichlet allocation to identify emerging topics. The probability of the annual occurrence of each topic is adjusted through the exponentially weighted moving average to reflect the importance of the recent probability of topics. Each topic is classified as “hot” or “cold” depending on whether the exponentially weighted moving average of the probabilities exceeds the threshold. We applied survival analysis to the time gap of recurrently becoming hot from a cold status with the associated factor of financial business method patents. The findings suggest that the topic with the short granted period and high forward citation is likely to become hot. In addition, the topic that is aged and specific in narrow areas is likely to continuously change into the hot or cold status. The approach proposed in this study contributes toward understanding topic emergence in the financial area and pursuing sustainable development.

    Abstract Accurate demand forecasting for new technology products is a key factor in the success of a business. We propose a way to forecasting a new product's diffusion through technology diffusion and interest diffusion. Technology diffusion and interest diffusion are measured by the volume of patent citations and web search traffic, respectively. We apply the proposed method to forecast the sales of hybrid cars and industrial robots in the US market. The results show that that technology diffusion, as represented by patent citations, can explain long-term sales for hybrid cars and industrial robots. On the other hand, interest diffusion, as represented by web search traffic, can help to improve the predictability of market sales of hybrid cars in the short-term. However, interest diffusion is difficult to explain the sales of industrial robots due to the different market characteristics. Finding indicates our proposed model can relatively well explain the diffusion of consumer goods.

    Abstract Abstract Physical activity has profound effects on neuronal progenitor cell growth, differentiation, and integration, but the mechanism for these effects is still ambiguous. Using a mouse model, we investigated the effects of two weeks of treadmill running on the dynamics of the size distribution and miRNA profiles of serum extracellular derivatives (EDs) using particle-sizing analysis and small RNA sequencing. We found that an increased average diameter of EDs in the running group compared with the sedentary group (p < 0.05), and 16 miRNAs were significantly altered (p < 0.05) in the running group. Furthermore, functional annotation analysis of differentially expressed miRNA-predicted target genes showed that many of these target genes are involved in the PI3K-Akt pathway. Exercise-induced serum EDs increased Neuro2A cell viability and Akt phosphorylation. We also found that expression levels of neuronal maturation markers such as Microtubule-Associated Protein 2 (MAP2ab) and Neuronal nuclei (NeuN) were increased (p < 0.05, respectively), and that inhibition of the PI3K-Akt pathway by LY294002 pre-treatment ameliorated their expression in Neuro2A cells. Finally, the administration of exercise-induced EDs for 3 days increased the Histone 3 phosphorylation and β-III tubulin expression in Ink/Arf null neural stem cells and progenitors (NSPCs) under each proliferation and differentiation condition. These results suggest that exercise-induced circulating EDs may mediate neuronal maturation during exercise.

    Abstract ObjectivesFacial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VSs) if the tumor is confined to the internal auditory canal (IAC) without involvement the geniculated ganglion or labyrinthine segment of facial nerve. Because facial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as VSs, we investigated the differences between the two.MethodsThe study included 187 patients with a preoperative diagnosis of VS. Of these, six were diagnosed with facial nerve schwannomas during surgery. We reviewed the preoperative evaluations and surgical findings of facial nerve schwannomas mimicking VSs.ResultsNo useful preoperative predictors are available for facial nerve schwannomas mimicking VSs. Facial nerve schwannomas are usually confined to the IAC. After opening the dura of the IAC, a facial nerve schwannoma can be diagnosed after identifying a normal-appearing nerve located lateral to the tumor. When this was the case, we performed facial nerve preservation surgery or decompression.ConclusionFacial nerve schwannomas can be differentiated from VSs by identifying specific findings during surgery.

    Abstract Predicting the isotopic modification of ice by melting processes is important for improving the accuracy in paleoclimate reconstruction. To this end, we present results from cold room laboratory observations of changes in the isotopic ratio (D/H and 18O/16O) of ice cubes by isotopic exchange between liquid water and ice in nearly isothermal conditions. A 1-D model was fit to the isotopic results by adjusting the values of two parameters, the isotopic exchange rate constant (kr) and the fraction of ice participating in the exchange (f). We found that the rate constant for hydrogen isotopic exchange between liquid water and ice may be greater (up to 40%) than that for the oxygen isotopic exchange. The range of the rate constant obtained from four melt experiments is from 0.21 to 0.82 h–1. The model results also suggest that f decreases with the increasing wetness of the ice. This is because with increasing water saturation in ice, water may be present only in the small pores or some of the water that was exchanged with ice may be bypassed, decreasing the effective surface area over which the isotopic exchange can occur. The relationship between the two water isotopes (δ18O vs δD) was observed and modeled and the slope was <8, which is significantly different from the slope of the meteoric waterline. We note that these slopes were obtained without considering the sublimation process.

    Abstract Abstract Since 2001, hundreds of thousands of hours of underwater acoustic recordings have been made throughout the Southern Ocean south of 60° S. Detailed analysis of the occurrence of marine mammal sounds in these circumpolar recordings could provide novel insights into their ecology, but manual inspection of the entirety of all recordings would be prohibitively time consuming and expensive. Automated signal processing methods have now developed to the point that they can be applied to these data in a cost-effective manner. However training and evaluating the efficacy of these automated signal processing methods still requires a representative annotated library of sounds to identify the true presence and absence of different sound types. This work presents such a library of annotated recordings for the purpose of training and evaluating automated detectors of Antarctic blue and fin whale calls. Creation of the library has focused on the annotation of a representative sample of recordings to ensure that automated algorithms can be developed and tested across a broad range of instruments, locations, environmental conditions, and years. To demonstrate the utility of the library, we characterise the performance of two automated detection algorithms that have been commonly used to detect stereotyped calls of blue and fin whales. The availability of this library will facilitate development of improved detectors for the acoustic presence of Southern Ocean blue and fin whales. It can also be expanded upon to facilitate standardization of subsequent analysis of spatiotemporal trends in call-density of these circumpolar species.

    Abstract Deployment of long-term, continuously recording passive-acoustic sensors in the ocean can provide insights into sound sources related to ocean dynamics, air–sea interactions, and biologic and human activities, all which contribute to shaping ocean soundscapes. In the polar regions, the changing ocean climate likely contributes to seasonal and long-term variation in cryogenic sounds, adding to the complexity of these soundscapes. The Korea Polar Research Institute and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have jointly operated two arrays of autonomous underwater hydrophones in the Southern Ocean, one in the Terra Nova Bay Polynya (TNBP) during December 2015–January 2019 and the other in the Balleny Islands (BI) region during January 2015–March 2016, to monitor changes in ocean soundscapes. In the BI region, we found distinct seasonal variations in the cryogenic signals that were attributed to collisions and thermal/mechanical fracturing of the surface sea ice. This is consistent with sea-ice patterns due to annual freeze–thaw cycles, which are not clearly observed in TNBP, where frequent blowing out of sea ice by katabatic winds and icequakes from nearby ice shelves generate strong noise even in austral winters. Another advantage of passive acoustic recordings is that they provide opportunities to measure biodiversity from classifying spectral characteristics of marine mammals: we identified 1. Leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx; 200–400 Hz), most abundant in the BI region and TNBP in December; 2. Antarctic blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus; distinctive vocalization at 18 and 27 Hz), strong signals in austral winter and fall in the BI region and TNBP; 3. Fin whales (B. physalus; fundamental frequency in the 15–28 Hz and overtones at 80 and 90 Hz), maximum presence in the BI region during the austral summer and spring months; 4. Antarctic minke whales (B. bonaerensis; 100–200 Hz), strongest signals from June to August in the BI region; 5. Humpback whales in TNBP; 6. Unidentified whales (long-duration downsweeping from 75 to 62 Hz), detected in TNBP. Long-term soundscape monitoring can help understand the spatiotemporal changes in the Southern Ocean and cryosphere and provide a means of assessing the status and trends of biodiversity in the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area.
