Abstract With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and rising competition, the survival environment of companies has become difficult to predict. Consequently, changes and innovations to gain a competitive edge have become essential for modern society. In this paper, the management innovation techniques and contents were examined through the case of re-engineering of Yuhan Kimberly, exploring the direction of development and the way to apply them nationally. Yuhan-Kimberly implemented people-centered management, such as improving the working environment, operating the lifelong learning system, introducing smart work and family-friendly management; it also strengthened social enterprise activities that had continued since the early days of its establishment, thereby, realizing social enterprise image integration. Consequently, it solidified its status as a social enterprise through the increase in corporate profits, the selection of respected companies, and the commendation of government agencies. Based on the case of Yuhan-Kimberly’s innovation, the government proposed work-life balance and family-friendly management, the transformation of information systems, the improvement of organizational culture, and the promotion of ethical management and social contribution activities. This suggests that the military should aim to achieve its basic goals, restore public trust, and establish its role in the changing security environment.

Abstract Abstract The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the risk of pancreatic cancer in the general population remains unclear. This nationwide cohort study included 8,120,674 adults who underwent a national health screening in 2009 from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Participants were followed-up until December 2017 for the development of pancreatic cancer. NAFLD was assessed using the fatty liver index: ≥ 60, NAFLD and < 30, no NAFLD. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was performed. During the follow-up of 59.1 million person-years, 10,470 participants were newly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. NAFLD was significantly associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared to no NAFLD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.17; 95% CI 1.09–1.26). This association was significant in both the obese (aHR, 1.14; 95% CI 1.05–1.23) and non-obese groups (aHR, 1.14; 95% CI 1.003–1.29). Individuals with fatty liver index 30–59 also had an increased risk (aHR, 1.10; 95% CI 1.05–1.16). The risk of pancreatic cancer increased with increasing fatty liver index scores (P for trend < 0.001). This study demonstrated that NAFLD was independently associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, regardless of obesity. Our finding suggests that NAFLD may be a modifiable risk factor for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract In the Republic of Korea, forest fire occurred at a rate of more than 400 events yr −1 from 2000 to 2016, and the burned areas are concentrated in the eastern coastal region. In this region, pine forest is extensively distributed, and pine forest is converted to oak forest through natural succession or stump-sprout regeneration following forest fires. However, there is a lack of research on oak competition and survival during the regeneration process in burned areas. Therefore, this research was carried out to evaluate the effects of oak survival ratio of Quercus serrata (glandbearing oak), Q. variabilis (oriental oak), and Q. mongolica (Mongolian oak) in burned areas. The investigation plots were set to survey tree height, diameter at breast height, sprout survival, and composition in Goseong-gun, Kangwon province, Republic of Korea. The mean tree heights of Q. serrata and Q. variabilis were approximately 9.8 m and 9.1 m, respectively, which were higher than the approximately 5.8 m heights of Q. mongolica stands 18 years after a forest fire, and the trend for tree diameter at breast height was the same for all three species stands. In the early stage of regeneration after the forest fire, the survival probability of the Q. serrata sprouts decreased at a rate of 1.7–2.0 times higher than that of other oak species in the Q. serrata -dominant stands, and this tendency was found to the survival probability in Q. variabilis -dominant stands as well. The median survival time of Q. variabilis sprouts in the Q. variabilis -dominant stands was approximately 10.1 years, which was similar to Q. serrata -dominant stands. However, the dominant stand of Q. mongolica was different from that of other dominant stands since the stand mostly located in the ridge and the upper part of the mountain where topography and soil conditions were considerably dissimilar from the other stands. The decision of dominant species seems to be determined by the survival and occurrence of sprouts during the early stage in post-fire regenerated ...

Abstract Abstract Normalization of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels is one of the goals of hepatitis B treatment. However, ALT levels in cirrhosis patients might be normal or mildly elevated regardless of ongoing inflammation. Therefore, we examined whether on-treatment ALT and other potential on-treatment indicators could be clinical surrogates of antiviral therapy in HBV-related cirrhosis. A total of 911 patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis who started treatment with entecavir or tenofovir were analyzed. At 1 year of antiviral therapy, we evaluated ‘ALT normalization’, ‘undetectable serum HBV DNA’, ‘fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index improvement’, and ‘serum HBeAg loss’ as potential biomarkers for HCC development. During 6.6 (3.8–10.2) years of follow-up, 222 patients (24.3%) newly developed HCC. Undetectable HBV DNA levels at 1 year were observed in 667 patients (73.2%), and the HCC incidence was significantly lower in this population (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 0.66, 95% CI 0.50–0.87). Improvement of the FIB-4 index (< 3.25) was associated with a lower risk of HCC in 478 patients with an elevated FIB-4 index (adjusted HR 0.59, 95% CI 0.55–0.82). However, there was no significant difference in HCC risk between those with and without normalization of ALT levels (p = 0.39) among those with elevated ALT levels or between those with and without HBeAg seroconversion (p = 0.55) among HBeAg-positive patients. Therefore, on-treatment FIB-4 levels at 1 year are clinically useful surrogates of antiviral therapy for HBV-related cirrhosis patients.

Abstract Warmer and drier conditions in temperate regions are increasing the length of the wildfire season. Given the greater fire frequency and extent of burned areas under climate warming, greater focus has been placed on predicting post-fire tree mortality as a crucial component of sustainable forest management. This study evaluates the potential of logistic regression models to predict post-fire tree mortality in Korean red pine ( Pinus densiflora ) stands, and we propose novel means of evaluating bark injury. In the Samcheok region of Korea, we measured topography (elevation, slope, and aspect), tree characteristics (tree/crown height and diameter at breast height (DBH)), and bark injuries (bark scorch height/proportion/index) at three sites subjected to a surface fire. We determined tree status (dead or live) over three years after the initial fire. The bark scorch index (BSI) produced the best univariate model, and by combining this index with the DBH produced the highest predictive capacity in multiple logistic regression models. A three-variable model (BSI, DBH, and slope) enhanced this predictive capacity to 87%. Our logistic regression analysis accurately predicted tree mortality three years post fire. Our three-variable model provides a useful and convenient decision-making tool for land managers to optimize salvage harvesting of post-fire stands.

Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of liver transplantation in Western countries. Studies of HCV infection using cell culture-produced HCV (HCVcc) in vitro systems require quantification of infectious HCV virions, which has conventionally been performed by immunofluorescence-based focus-forming assay with manual foci counting; however, this is a laborious and time-consuming procedure with potentially biased results. In the present study, we established and optimized a method for convenient and objective quantification of HCV virions by colorimetric focus-forming assay with automated focus counting by image analysis. In testing different enzymes and chromogenic substrates, we obtained superior foci development using alkaline phosphatase-conjugated secondary antibody with BCIP/NBT chromogenic substrate. We additionally found that type I collagen coating minimized cell detachment during vigorous washing of the assay plate. After the colorimetric focus-forming assay, the foci number was determined using an ELISpot reader and image analysis software. The foci number and the calculated viral titer determined by this method strongly correlated with those determined by immunofluorescence-based focus-forming assay and manual foci counting. These results indicate that colorimetric focus-forming assay with automated focus counting by image analysis is applicable as a more-efficient and objective method for quantification of infectious HCV virions.

Abstract In various unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imaging applications, the multisensor super-resolution (SR) technique has become a chronic problem and attracted increasing attention. Multisensor SR algorithms utilize multispectral low-resolution (LR) images to make a higher resolution (HR) image to improve the performance of the UAV imaging system. The primary objective of the paper is to develop a multisensor SR method based on the existing multispectral imaging framework instead of using additional sensors. In order to restore image details without noise amplification or unnatural post-processing artifacts, this paper presents an improved regularized SR algorithm by combining the directionally-adaptive constraints and multiscale non-local means (NLM) filter. As a result, the proposed method can overcome the physical limitation of multispectral sensors by estimating the color HR image from a set of multispectral LR images using intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) image fusion. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides better SR results than existing state-of-the-art SR methods in the sense of objective measures.

Abstract Abstract Cancer cachexia affects quality of life, response to chemotherapy, and survival in many advanced cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment cachexia index (CXI) in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with systematic chemotherapy. Patients with advanced HCC treated with lenvatinib therapy between October 2018 and October 2020 were retrospectively studied. The CXI was calculated as (L3 skeletal muscle index) × (serum albumin)/(neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio). The association with treatment response and early adverse events within the first two months of lenvatinib therapy was investigated. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method with log-rank test. Multivariable Cox regression was used to identify the predictors of survival. A total of 116 patients (median age: 60, male: 84.5% ) with calculated CXI. They divided into two groups: high CXI (≥ 53, n = 82) and low CXI (< 53, n = 34). Patients with low CXI had a significantly lower disease control rate (61.8% vs. 89.0%, p = 0.001) and a shorter median OS (8.0 [95% CI 6.2–9.8] vs. 12.3 [95% CI 10.1–14.4] months, p = 0.002) than those with high CXI. In multivariable analysis, low CXI was independently associated with shorter OS (HR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.17–3.65, p = 0.01) and PFS (HR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.09–3.09, p = 0.02). Of note, during the first two months of lenvatinib therapy, anorexia (41.2% vs. 22.0%, p = 0.04) developed more frequently among patients with low CXI than those with high CXI. The CXI may be a clinically useful index for predicting poor treatment response and prognosis in patients with advanced HCC undergoing lenvatinib treatment.

Abstract Changes in the prevalence of disease over time provide valuable information from a public health perspective. We used data from Korea Military Manpower Administration medical examinations for conscription between 2003 and 2019 (n = 5,355,941), which involved young men aged 19 years, to observe changes in liver disease over time at a population level. Trends in the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, obesity, and hypertension were assessed. The prevalence of HBsAg steadily decreased from 3.19% for men born in 1984 to 0.18% for men born in 2000. Among HBsAg-negative subjects, the prevalence of elevated ALT levels increased from 13.15% for men born in 1986 to 16.48% for men born in 2000. The prevalence of obesity, hypertension and the proportion with high FIB-4 scores (≥ 1.45) also increased. This population-based nationwide analysis showed a decreasing trend of HBsAg and increasing trends of possible non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
