    Abstract We established the systematic concept framework of shelterbelt construction, with "shelterbelts" as the core concern in the construction of integrated ecosystems including mountain, river, forest, farmland, lake, grassland and sandy-land in semi-arid wind-sand areas. In the construction of shelterbelts, it is necessary to adhere to the principles of scientific coordination and systematic management, considering the carrying capacity of water resources, the demand for dust control, the greening and beautification effects, as well as the principle of improving economic benefits. In practice, the construction methods should base on the types and temporal-spatial distribution of shelterbelts, following the shelterbelts construction theory and technology to form different structure and service functions, achieving the functional goals of shelterbelts. By focusing on the key elements including people, forests, grass, fields, water, and sand, we put forward the timeliness, practicality, and scientificity of shelterbelt construction, proposing construction methods for farmland shelterbelts, pastureland shelterbelts, windbreak and sand-fixing forests and protective forest around village (city), which might provide production technical support for the high-quality construction of green ecological barrier in northern China.

    Abstract Aiming to provide a feasible crawling motion analysis method for clinical application, this study introduced electromyography (EMG)-based motion intention recognition technology into the pattern recognition of inter-limb coordination during human crawling for the first time. Eight inter-limb coordination modes (ILCMs) were defined. Ten adult participants were recruited, and each participant performed hands-knees crawling at low, medium, and fast speeds in self-selected ILCMs and the eight predefined ILCMs, respectively. EMG signals for pattern recognition were collected from 30 limbs and trunk muscles, and pressure signals for crawling cycle segmentation were collected from the left palm. The pattern recognition experiments were conducted in participant-specific, multi-participant, and participant-independent ways, respectively, adopting three different classifiers, including bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network, support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN). The experimental results show that EMG-based pattern recognition schemes could classify the eight ILCMs with high recognition rates, thereby confirming the feasibility of providing an EMG-based crawling motion analysis method for clinical doctors. Furthermore, based on the classification results of self-selected ILCMs at different speeds and the statistical results of stance duration, swing duration, and the duty factors of stance phase, the possible reasons why humans chose various ILCMs at different crawling speeds were discussed. The research results have potential application value for evaluating crawling function, understanding abnormal crawling control mechanisms, and designing rehabilitation robots.

    Abstract Objective: To investigate the mechanism of Anwei decoction (AWD) intervention on gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) using a rat model through the endoplasmic reticulum stress-autophagy pathway.
    Methods: Gastric intestinal metaplasia was induced in rats using 1-methyl-3-nitro-1-nitrosoguanidine. The experiment included a normal control group, a model group, and low-, medium- and high-dose AWD groups. The specificity of intestinal epithelial cells was determined for model establishment and drug efficacy by detecting the protein expression of markers such as MUC2, VILLIN and CDX2 through western blotting (WB). The effects of AWD on endoplasmic reticulum stress and autophagy were evaluated by measuring the mRNA and protein expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum stress markers (PEPK, ATF6, CHOP and caspase-12) and autophagy markers (LC3Ⅱ and Beclin-1) using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and the WB method. Furthermore, the ultrastructure of gastric mucosal cells and autophagosome status were observed using transmission electron microscopy.
    Results: Compared with the model group, the AWD-treated rats exhibited significant improvement in body weight (P < 0.01), reduced protein expression of the intestine epithelial cell-specific markers MUC2, VILLIN, CDX2 and KLF4 (P < 0.01 for all) and increased SOX2 protein expression (P < 0.01). In addition, AWD suppressed the mRNA and protein expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress markers PEPK and ATF6 (P < 0.01 for all) and promoted the mRNA and protein expression of autophagy and apoptosis markers CHOP, caspase-12, LC3Ⅱ and Beclin-1 (P < 0.01 for all).
    Conclusion: Anwei decoction effectively inhibits the further progression of GIM and prevents the occurrence of gastric mucosal carcinogenesis.

    Abstract Disinfection by chloramination produces toxic byproducts and the difference in toxicity of reclaimed and drinking water treated by chloramination remains unclear. This study investigated cytotoxic effects at the same concentrations of dissolved organic matter and showed that chloraminated effluent organic matter (EfOM) induced 1.7 times higher cytotoxicity than chloraminated natural organic matter (NOM) applied to simulate drinking water. Chloraminated EfOM induced more reactive nitrogen species than chloraminated NOM, and chloraminated EfOM and NOM induced similar and higher levels of reactive oxygen species than the negative control, respectively. Consequently, intracellular macromolecule damage indicated by DNA/RNA damage marker 8‑hydroxy-(deoxy)guanosine and the intracellular protein carbonyl concentration induced by chloraminated EfOM was higher and slightly more than that induced by chloraminated NOM, respectively. These data were consistent with the effects on cell physiological processes. Cell cycle arrest mainly occurred in G2 phase by chloraminated EfOM and NOM. Early apoptotic cells, which could return to normal, increased upon exposure to high concentrations of chloraminated EfOM and NOM. Moreover, necrotic cells were significantly increased from 0.5% to 2.5% when the concentration increased from 20- to 60-fold chloraminated EfOM, but were not obviously changed by chloraminated NOM. These results indicated that the comprehensive intracellular changes induced by toxic substances in chloraminated EfOM were more irreversible and induced more cell death than chloraminated NOM.

    Abstract The 5'-HOXD genes are important for chondrogenesis in vertebrates, but their roles in osteoarthritis (OA) are still ambiguous. In our study, 5'-HOXD genes involvement contributing to cartilage degradation and OA was investigated. In bioinformatics analysis of 5'-HOXD genes, we obtained the GSE169077 data set related to OA in the GEO and analyzed DEGs using the GEO2R tool attached to the GEO. Then, we screened the mRNA levels of 5'-HOXD genes by quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). We discovered that OA chondrocyte proliferation was inhibited, and apoptosis was increased. Moreover, it was discovered that SOX9 and COL2A1 were downregulated at mRNA and protein levels, while matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and a disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTSs) were upregulated. According to the results of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and qRT-PCR, we evaluated the protein level of HOXD11 and found that the expression of HOXD11 was downregulated, reversed to MMPs and ADAMTSs but consistent with the cartilage-specific factors, SOX9 and COL2A1. In the lentivirus transfection experiments, HOXD11 overexpression reversed the effects in OA chondrocytes. In human OA articular cartilage, aberrant subchondral bone was formed in hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and Safranin O and fast green (SOFG) staining results. Furthermore, according to immunohistochemistry findings, SOX9 and HOXD11 expression was inhibited. The results of this study established that HOXD11 was downregulated in OA cartilage and that overexpression of HOXD11 could prevent cartilage degradation in OA.

    Abstract Study design: A retrospective study.
    Objective: The aim of this study was to compare clinical and radiological outcomes of the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with a novel zero-profile variable-angle (Zero-P VA) spacer and a traditional poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) cage and plate system in cases pertaining to cervical radiculopathy/myelopathy. There are two conventional types of ACDF procedures aimed at treating symptomatic cervical spondylosis. The first one involves an uninstrumented "stand-alone" approach utilizing bone graft/cage, while the second incorporates bone graft/cage in conjunction with a front plate positioned before the vertebral bodies. Both procedures have their own inherent advantages and disadvantages. The Zero-P VA spacer, however, represents a unique synthesis by amalgamating the advantages of both traditionally typical procedures. Notably, this spacer can potentially circumvent the issue related to prevertebral soft-tissue disturbance and reduce the occurrence of dysphagia.
    Methods: Using our surgical database, the authors systematically conducted a retrospective analysis encompassing all patients who underwent single-level ACDF between January 2018 and January 2019, with a minimum two-year follow-up. Patients either received a Zero-P VA implant or PEEK cage coupled with plating. The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for arm and neck pain were documented. Dysphagia was evaluated using the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (ETA-10). Additional parameters such as cervical alignment, fusion rate and the incidence of postoperative complications were assessed.
    Results: According to the outcomes of the statistical analysis, there was no substantial disparity that emerged in the advancements observed in the JOA and VAS metrics between the two study cohorts. Noteworthy, however, the ETA-10 scores were statistically significantly reduced in the Zero-P VA group compared to the cage and plating group (p < 0.05). At the final follow-up, there were no statistically significant differences in the height of the operated segment, Cobb angle of the fused segment, C2-C7 Cobb angle and fusion rate between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, postoperative complications were slightly lower in patients with the Zero-P VA group (7.69%) as compared to the cage and plating group (16.67%).
    Conclusion: The clinical outcomes observed with the Zero-P VA spacer used for single-level ACDF were found to be satisfactory. The performance of this device is comparable or even superior to the traditional cage and plating method in preventing postoperative dysphagia and mitigating potential complications associated with the use of a plate.

    Abstract In order to reveal in-depth the neuromuscular control mechanism of human crawling, this study carries out muscle synergy extraction and analysis on human hands-knees crawling under eight specific inter-limb coordination modes, which are defined according to the swing sequence of limbs and includes two-limb swing crawling modes and six single-limb swing crawling modes. Ten healthy adults participate in crawling data collection, and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals are recorded from 30 muscles of limbs and trunk. Non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF) algorithm is adopted for muscle synergy extraction, and a three-step muscle synergy analysis scheme is implemented by using the hierarchical clustering method. Based on results of muscle synergy extraction, 4 to 7 synergies are extracted from each participant in each inter-limb coordination mode, which supports the muscle synergy hypothesis to some extent, namely, central nervous system (CNS) controls the inter-limb coordination modes during crawling movement by recruiting a certain amount of muscle synergies, rather than a single muscle. In addition, when different participants crawl in the same inter-limb coordination mode, they share more temporal features in recruiting muscle synergies. Further, by extracting and analyzing intra-mode shared synergies among participants and inter-mode shared synergies among the eight inter-limb coordination modes, the CNS is found to realize single-limb swing crawling modes by recruiting the four inter-mode shared synergy structures related to the swing function of each limb in different orders, and realize the two-limb swing crawling modes by recruiting synchronously two intra-mode shared synergy structures. The research results of the muscle synergy analysis on the eight specific inter-limb coordination modes, on the one hand, provide a basis for muscle synergy hypothesis from the perspective of crawling motion, on the other hand, also provide a possible explanation for the choice of the inter-limb coordination mode in human crawling.
