Abstract AIM: To compare the efficacy and complication of extra-trabeculotomy in combination with trabeculectomy and trabeculectomy and compound trabeculectomy in the treatment of primary infantile glaucoma. METHODS: Patients with primary infantile glaucoma undergone one of the three procedures from Jan 2006 to Jan 2014 were selected. Among them, group A(20 patients, 31 eyes)underwent extra-trabeculotomy in combination with trabeculectomy, group B(20 patients, 32 eyes)underwent trabeculectomy, while group C(20 patients, 30 eyes)underwent compound trabeculectomy RESULTS: The success rates in group A were 96.8% at the time of discharge and 90.3% during follow-up(mean 24mo); the rates in group B were 96.9% and 81.2%(mean 24mo)the rates in group C were 83.3% and 76.7%(mean 24mo)respectively, the differences being significant( P <0.05). In group A and group B, there was no severe complications, while in group C, one case had vitreous prolapse. CONCLUSION: Extra-trabeculotomy in combination with trabeculectomy is more efficacious and safer than trabeculectomy and compound trabeculectomy in the treatment of primary infantile glaucoma. It should be the first choice for primary infantile glaucoma.

Abstract Panax ginseng is a famous valuable folk herb, the price of which particularly depends on its cultivation age. Since the classical chemical analysis usually needs to destroy the plants which is not suitable for the old wild ginseng due to the huge cost, in the current study, we employed the headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) GC-MS methodology which has the advantage of time-saving, nondestructive, and green to analyze the growth age of ginseng (roots) via determining the volatile components of ginseng stem and leaves (GSLs) combined with metabolic profiles way. 100 mg of finely ground GSL samples (3–7 years) were extracted by a 65 μm PDMS-DVB fiber in the headspace and then analyzed within 20 mins. The content assay of total saponins, crude polysaccharides, and total protein was also included. As a result of GC-MS-based profiling, the orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis’ (OPLS-DA) score plots showed excellent classification of four comparison groups (the 3- and 4-, 3-and 5-, 3- and 6-, and 3- and 7-year-old GSL) with 100% discrimination rate, respectively. 263 common differential variables were gained referring to the VIP and P values. 32 volatile metabolites were identified and showed good age discrimination capacities with an area under the curve (AUC) value of more than 0.8 by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Remarkably, there was one volatile component of sesquiterpenes, 1-cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde, 2, 6, 6-trimethyl-, which showed an excellent prediction with the AUC value of 1.0 among all the four compared groups, which could be the potential biomarker to distinguish all the four compared groups. The total contents of different growth ages of components of ginseng stems and leaves were distinct. The contents of total protein (4.80 ± 0.27%) and crude polysaccharide (24.15 ± 0.89%) in the 4th year of GSLs were the highest among the five cultivation years. The content of total saponins (4.66 ± 0.38%) in the 5th year of GSLs was the highest. These results ...

Abstract Summary: Drinking behavior in rodents is characterized by stereotyped, rhythmic licking movement, which is regulated by the basal ganglia. It is unclear how direct and indirect pathways control the lick bout and individual spout contact. We find that inactivating D1 and D2 receptor-expressing medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in the ventrolateral striatum (VLS) oppositely alters the number of licks in a bout. D1- and D2-MSNs exhibit different patterns of lick-sequence-related activity and different phases of oscillation time-locked to the lick cycle. On the timescale of a lick cycle, transient inactivation of D1-MSNs during tongue protrusion reduces spout contact probability, whereas transiently inactivating D2-MSNs has no effect. On the timescale of a lick bout, inactivation of D1-MSNs (D2-MSNs) causes rate increase (decrease) in a subset of basal ganglia output neurons that decrease firing during licking. Our results reveal the distinct roles of D1- and D2-MSNs in regulating licking at both coarse and fine timescales.

Abstract Summary: Despite being innate, displays of aggression are influenced by cortical activities. Here, using Vglut1 as a marker for inputs from cortical structures, we identify a small population of excitatory neurons located in the posterior amygdala (PA) that project to the ventrolateral division of ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMHvl), a region that critically regulates territorial aggression. Indeed, activities of PA Vglut1+ (PAVglut1) neurons, as analyzed by post hoc c-Fos expression, differentiate trials in which attacks occur, or not, during resident-intruder assays. More importantly, chemogenetic activation of VMHvl-projecting PAVglut1 neurons robustly promote aggression while inhibition of these neurons reduces attacks. Finally, a connectivity map places VMHvl-projecting PAVglut1 neurons at the interface between emotion regulation and aggression as they receive broad inputs from limbic structures and project collaterally to the VMHvl and other targets. Taken together, these results point to VMHvl-projecting PAVglut1 neurons as a potential site for cortical gating of territorial aggression. : While innate, displays of aggression are influenced by cortical activity. Using Vglut1 as a marker for cortical structures, Zha et al. identify a population of Vglut1+ neurons in the posterior amygdala (PA) that project to the ventrolateral division of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMHvl) and bidirectionally modulate territorial attacks. Abstract Abstract Ordered Fe-doped In2O3 nanodot arrays with diameters between 35 nm and 80 nm are fabricated using pulsed laser deposition with the aid of ultrathin porous anodized aluminumoxide templates. The 5 at.% Fe doped In2O3 nanodot arrays are shown to consist of the cubic bixbyite structure of In2O3. The nanodot arrays are demonstrated to be doped by Fe ions with mixed valences of +2 and +3, ruling out the presence of cluster and secondary phase related to Fe. The nanodot arrays exhibit the ferromagnetism at room temperature, where the magnetic moment increases as the dot size is reduced, rising to a maximum of about 230 emu/cm3 (equivalent to an average moment on the Fe ions of 15.30 µB/Fe). This indicates an effect due to the surface of the nanodot arrays. The optical band width is also increased to 4.55 eV for the smallest dot array, thus indicating that the surface states are responsible for the magnetism and also enhance the band gap due to Burstein-Moss effect. Our results will be benefit for understanding the physical properties of oxide semiconductor nanostructures in the application of nano-spintronics devices.

Abstract Objective: To explore the clinical effect of creatine phosphate sodium combined with spleen aminopeptide on treatment of hand-foot-mouth disease in children with myocardial damage. Methods: A total of 86 cases with hand-foot-mouth disease combined with cardiac damage in our hospital from January 2012 to July 2014 were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group with 43 cases in each group. Patients in the control group received conventional treatment while observation group patients were treated with creatine phosphate sodium combined with spleen amino peptide treatment. Hs-CRP, myocardial enzymes indexes, serum cytokines, NT-proBNP, PCT, endotoxin, D-lactate and immune related indicators were compared between two groups of children after treatment. Results: In observation group patients' serum IL-4, IL-6 and IL-17 levels were lower than those of of the control group after treatment (P < 0.05) while IFN-γ and IL-10 levels were higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). In observation group patients' NT-proBNP, PCT, endotoxin and D-lactate levels were lower than those of the control group after treatment (P < 0.05). In observation group patients’ CD3+, CD4+ T lymphocytes, IgA, IgM and IgG levels were higher than those of the control group after treatment while CD8+ T lymphocyte level was lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Creatine phosphate sodium combined with spleen amino peptide treatment can effectively protect myocardial and regulate immune as well as optimize systemic inflammatory state.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the effect and mechanism of continuous blood purification (CBP) on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and provide reference for clinical treatment. Methods: 80 cases of patients with ARDS in our hospital were analyzed, the clinical indicators and hemodynamic parameters before and after CBP were compared, and ELISA was used to detect expression change of serum interleukin family and ERK signaling pathway protein. 80 cases of healthy subjects during the same period were taken as control group. Results: Compared with before treatment, heart rate, pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary artery wedge pressure were effectively normalized after CBP, hemodynamic parameters were effectively improved, and compared with control group, there were significant statistical differences (P<0.05); meanwhile, after CBP, interleukins IL2, IL6 and IL10 as well as TGFβ levels significantly decreased, MEK signaling pathway protein Ras, MEK and ERK1/2 expression significantly decreased, and compared with before treatment, there were significant statistical differences (P<0.01, P<0.05). Conclusions: Continuous blood purification may play the role of treating acute respiratory distress syndrome through reducing levels of interleukins and TGFβ as well as inhibiting MEK signaling pathway

Abstract Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) develops various toxic effects in the liver by impairing mitochondrial function, inducing cell apoptosis. However, little is focused on its toxicity to broiler cardiomyocytes (BCMs). Here, the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cardiac troponin T (cTnT) location, apoptosis induced by AFB1, and antioxidative genes were investigated in BCMs. It was found that AFB1 evoked intracellular ROS generation, and induced apoptosis in BCMs. AFB1 treatment resulted in increased percentage of apoptotic cells, increased location range of cTnT in cytoplasm, upregulated messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2) and downregulated mRNA expressions of Mn‐superoxide dismutase in BCMs. These findings suggested AFB1 treatment caused significant cardiomyocyte damage and cardiotoxicity, impairment of mitochondrial functions, activated ROS generation, and induced apoptosis, and probably was involved in the Nrf2 signal pathway in BCMs.
