    Abstract Abstract A new fluid alternative to slick water for fracturing shale gas can reduce the waste of water resources and improve the extraction efficiency, enabling volumetric fracturing. For the new fracturing technique, the experiments of different release pressures under pre-injection and for pre-injection were conducted using a self-designed true triaxial experimental system, and the pressure pulse curves were plotted to analyze the fracturing principle. The experimental results showed that: (1) the pressure rise curve in the reactor can be divided into five stages: initial reaction, linear pressure rise, rate slowdown, instantaneous pressure release, and residual pressure stages; (2) Pre-filling fracturing requires a smaller expansion ratio, weaker pressure degradation, resulting in better fracturing effect; (3) The increase in the initial fracture length leads to an increase in the pressure required to extend the fracture, and high-pressure subcritical water impact fracturing achieved fracture extension at a lower fluid pressure; (4) The fractal dimension has a strong linear relationship with fracture complexity, which is a new option when evaluating the fracturing effect. Volumetric fracturing allows for the creation of more tiny trenches that increase reservoir permeability, leading to better recovery of the reservoir’s energy resources.

    Abstract This paper presents an empirical investigation of the factors contributing to freeway crashes on weekdays and weekends, using a Bayesian spatial logistic model. The crash data from Kaiyang Freeway, China, in 2014 are used for the empirical investigation. The deviation information criterion (DIC) values indicate that the proposed spatial logistic model is clearly superior to a logistic model in analyzing weekday and weekend crashes. Additionally, significant spatial effects are found in adjacent freeway segments for both weekday and weekend crashes, which demonstrate the reasonableness of the proposed model. The results of parameter estimation suggest that: traffic volume, roadway segment length, and the proportions of vehicles in Classes 2 and 4 have significant effects on weekday and weekend crash incidences in the same direction; horizontal curvature, presence of a ramp, and average daily precipitation impact weekday crash incidence only; and the proportion of vehicles in Class 3 and vertical grade impact weekend crash incidence only. Some countermeasures from the perspectives of roadway design and traffic management have been proposed to reduce freeway crashes on weekdays and weekends, respectively.

    Abstract The proposal of improving reproducibility by lowering the significance threshold to 0.005 has been discussed, but the impact on conducting clinical trials has yet to be examined from a study design perspective. The impact on sample size and study duration was investigated using design setups from 125 phase II studies published between 2015 and 2022. The impact was assessed using percent increase in sample size and additional years of accrual with the medians being 110.97% higher and 2.65 years longer respectively. The results indicated that this proposal causes additional financial burdens that reduce the efficiency of conducting clinical trials.

    Abstract As a typical organophosphorus flame retardant, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is refractory in aqueous environment. The application of TAP is a promising method for removing pollutants. Herein, the removal of TCEP using TAP was rigorously investigated, and the effects of some key variables were optimized by the one-factor-at-a-time approach. To further evaluate the interactions among variables, the response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design was employed. Under optimized conditions (pH 5, [PS]0: [TCEP]0 = 500:1), the maximum removal efficiency (RE) of TCEP reached up to 90.6%. In real-world waters, the RE of TCEP spanned the range of 56%− 65% in river water, pond water, lake water and sanitary sewage. The low-concentration Cl- (0.1 mM) promoted TCEP degradation, but the contrary case occurred when the high-concentration Cl-, NO3-, CO32-, HCO3-, HPO42-, H2PO4-, NH4+ and humic acid were present owing to their prominently quenching effects on SO4•-. Both EPR and scavenger experiments revealed that the main radicals in the TAP system were SO4•- and •OH, in which SO4•- played the most crucial role in TCEP degradation. GC-MS/MS analysis disclosed that two degradation products appeared, sourcing from the replacement, oxidation, hydroxylation and water-molecule elimination reactions. The other two products were inferred from the comprehensive literature. As for acute toxicity to fish, daphnid and green algae, product A displayed the slightly higher toxicity, whereas other three products exhibited the declining toxicity as compared to their parent molecule. These findings offer a theoretical/practical reference for high-efficiency removal of TCEP and its ecotoxicological risk evaluation.

    Abstract Cadmium (Cd) is a harmful metal that seriously affects the male reproductive system, but the mechanism of how Cd exposure damages Sertoli cells is not fully understood. This study used TM4 cells to explore the mechanism of Cd damage to Sertoli cells. We found that Cd was concentration- and time-dependent on TM4 cell viability. Cd exposure increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) release in TM4 cells, decreased mitochondrial function, and increased pyroptosis. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), MCC950 and BAY 11–7082 (BAY) alleviate the release of IL-1β and LDH induced by Cd. NAC reduced Cd induced increases in ROS, NLRP3, Caspase-1, Heme oxygenase-1(HO-1), superoxide dismutase (SOD2), and increased mitochondrial function. The activation of GSDMD is the main causes of pyroptosis, and NAC significantly inhibit its activation and formation. Our results suggest that Cd exposure induces a toxic mechanism of GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis in TM4 cells by increasing ROS levels and activating the inflammasome.

    Abstract Background. The etiology of sudden deafness is still unclear. In recent years, people’s life rhythm is getting faster and faster. Fatigue, environment, diet, psychology, and other factors have increased the morbidity rate of sudden deafness and improved the quality of life of patients. And work efficiency is greatly affected. Aims. A study to investigate the clinical efficacy of postauricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate in the treatment of sudden deafness with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods. Sixty patients with sudden deafness who were treated in our hospital from January 2018 to October 2020 were selected as the subjects of this prospective study and divided into 30 cases each in the comparison group and the observation group according to the random number remainder grouping method. The comparison group was treated conventionally, and the observation group was treated with postauricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate on the basis of the comparison group. Patients in the two groups were observed and compared on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days after treatment with pure-tone hearing threshold checks and regular monitoring of blood glucose, blood rheology, and other indexes. Results. On the 7th, 14th, and 30th days after treatment, the pure-tone audiometric thresholds of the two groups were gradually decreased, and the changes in the pure-tone audiometric thresholds in the observation group were greater than those in the control group. After lunch on the 6th day and after lunch on the 9th day, it was lower than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). 30 days after treatment, the blood viscosity, fibrin, and platelet aggregation rate of the observation group were significantly lower than those of the control group. After treatment, the clinical efficacy rate of the observation group was 96%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group, 80%, and the above differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). ...

    Abstract The purpose of our research was to study the effects of dietary addition of Clostridium butyricum (CB) on performance, immunocompetence and digestive function of poultry. Using single factor experiment design, 720 one-day-old and healthy AA broilers were divided into 6 groups with 6 replicates in each group and 20 broilers in each replicate. Broilers in control group were fed a basal diet, while broilers of other experimental group were fed the basal diet supplemented with CB 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg, 750 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg and 1250 mg/kg. The results showed as follows: The 1000mg/mg group had the best effect on immunity enhancement, with the thymus index, spleen index and bursa index increased by 18.38 % (P < 0.05), 16.00 % (P < 0.05) and 8.03 % (P > 0.05) in 1–21 days, and 6.45 % (P < 0.05), 12.92 % (P < 0.05) and 13.94 % (P < 0.05) in 22–49 days. The 1000 mg/kg group and 1250 mg/kg group had the best effect on improving the digestive function, with the VH/CD value increased by 27.56 % (P < 0.05) and 29.56 % (P < 0.05) in 1–21 days, and 29.48 % (P < 0.05) and 30.80 % (P < 0.05) in 22–49 days, with the number of harmful bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella decreased significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that the addition of CB in diets of broiler can improve the production performance, enhance immunity and improve digestive function, and the optimal dosage is 1000 mg/kg.

    Abstract Trabecular meshwork (TM) motion abnormality is the leading cause of glaucoma. With technique limitations, how TM moves is still an enigma. This study describes a new laboratory platform to investigate TM motion responses to ocular transients in ex vivo eyes. The anterior segments of human cadaver and primate eyes were mounted in a perfusion system fitting. Perfusion needles were placed to establish mean baseline pressure. A perfusion pump was connected to the posterior chamber and generated an immediate transient pressure elevation. A phase-sensitive optical coherent tomography system imaged and quantified the TM motion. The peak-to-peak TM displacements (ppTMD) were determined, a tissue relaxation curve derived, and a time constant obtained. This study showed that the ppTMD increased with a rise in the pulse amplitude. The ppTMD was highest for the lowest mean pressure of 16 mmHg and decreased with mean pressure increase. The pulse frequency did not significantly change ppTMD. With a fixed pulse amplitude, an increase in mean pressure significantly reduced the time constant of recoil from maximum distension. Our research platform permitted quantitation of TM motion responses to designed pulse transients. Our findings may improve the interpretation of new TM motion measurements in clinic, aiding in understanding mechanisms and management.
