    Abstract Abstract Lateral wedge insole (LWI) is a frequently recommended treatment option for early and midterm stages of medial knee osteoarthritis. However, studies of its effects on the lower limb joints are incomplete and imperfect. The main purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the response of intervention of LWI on lower-limb joint kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRFs), and centre of pressure (COP). Gait analysis of 16 healthy subjects was conducted. Three-dimensional motion data and force plate measurements were collected in the control (barefoot) and experimental conditions (wearing a pair of assigned shoes with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs). Results showed that the peak knee flexion angle was increased by 3.43°, 3.09°, and 3.27° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p < 0.01). The ankle peak dorsiflexion angle was significantly decreased by 3.79°, 2.19°, and 1.66° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p = 0.02). The internal rotation angle was increased by 2.78°, 3.76°, and 4.58° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p < 0.01). The forefoot with LWIs showed highly significantly smaller inversion, eversion, and adduction angles (all p < 0.01). The 1st peak of the vertical GRF (p = 0.016) also increased significantly by a maximum of 0.06 body weight (BW) with LWIs. These results indicated that biomechanical changes and limitations of lateral wedges insole should be analyzed in more detail, possibly leading to new guidelines for the design and application.

    Abstract Abstract The study aimed at investigating copper, lead, and cadmium removal from both single and mixed metal solutions by Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng. wood sawdust treated with 0.5 mol l−1 NaOH for four hours. In order to evaluate the effects of each factor and interactions between factors on metal ion biosorption, a 23 factorial experimental design was applied. FTIR results showed that the metal ions would bind to the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of M. figo wood sawdust biomass. The main effects and interactions of three factors pH (3 and 5), initial metal ion concentration (C 0 , 0.157 and 1.574 mmol L−1), and dosage of biomass (D, 4 and 10 g L−1) at two levels were analyzed. The most significant variable regarding Cu2+ and Pb2+ biosorption was initial metal iron concentration. For Cd2+, pH was found to be the most significant factor. The maximum removal efficiencies were 94.12 and 100% for Cu2+ and Cd2+, respectively, at conditions of (+ 1, − 1, + 1): pH 5, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L−1 and dosage of biomass 10 g L−1, while 96.39% for Pb2+ at conditions of (− 1, − 1, + 1): pH 3, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L−1 and dosage of biomass 10 g L−1. There were some interactions between factors: pH*C 0 and C 0 *D for Cu2+, pH*C 0 , pH*D and C 0 *D for Pb2+, pH*C 0 and C 0 *D for Cd2+. Biosorption from a multi metal system showed that the presence of Cu2+ and Cd2+ had no significant influence on the Pb2+ removal, while Pb2+ in solution significantly decreased the removal efficiencies of the other two metals.

    Abstract Abstract Metal halide solid-state electrolytes have gained widespread attention due to their high ionic conductivities, wide electrochemical stability windows, and good compatibility with oxide cathode materials. The exploration of highly ionic conductive halide electrolytes is actively ongoing. Thus, understanding the relationship between composition and crystal structure can be a critical guide for designing better halide electrolytes, which still remains obscure for reliable prediction. Here we show that the cationic polarization factor, which describes the geometric and ionic conditions, is effective in predicting the stacking structure of halide electrolytes formation. By supplementing this principle with rational design and preparation of more than 10 lithium halide electrolytes with high conductivity over 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, we establish that there should be a variety of promising halide electrolytes that have yet to be discovered and developed. This methodology may enable the systematic screening of various potential halide electrolytes and demonstrate an approach to the design of halide electrolytes with superionic conductivity beyond the structure and stability predictions.

    Abstract Carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems is crucial to advance carbon neutrality and support sustainable development. Extensive studies have explored the effect of land use change on carbon storage, especially urban expansion. As one of the world’s top urban agglomerations, the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration (PRDUA) is facing a dramatic loss of carbon storage along with urbanization. Coordinating economic development and ecological protection and achieving low-carbon green development are urgently needed to alleviate the decline in urban carbon storage. Here, we quantified land use change in the historical period (2000, 2010, 2020) and in 2030 and then estimated carbon storage dynamics at different scales by combining the PLUS model and the InVEST model. We found that: (1) Construction land significantly increased simultaneously with considerable losses of farmland (2273.29 km2) and forestland (949.98 km2) from 2010–2020. In 2030, construction land will expand by 997.83 km2 (12.51%), 1419.97 km2 (17.79%), and 238.60 km2 (2.99%) under the natural growth (NG), urban expansion (UE), and low carbon development (LCD) scenarios, respectively. (2) Compared to 2020, carbon storage under the LCD will reach 6.51×108 Mg, with the lowest decline rate (0.35%). (3) At the city level, Shenzhen had the highest decline rate under various scenarios, followed by Zhuhai and Guangzhou. At the county scale, carbon storage followed the order NG > UE > LCD in 2000–2030. At the grid scale, carbon storage showed a declining trend from the central PRDUA region to marginal areas. Thus, comprehensive considering the multiscale effects of land use change on carbon storage was beneficial to formulate reasonable measures for specific areas. Differentiated development categories at different scales and low-carbon industrial upgrading should be implemented to maintain ecosystem services and achieve sustainable development.

    Abstract In recent years, the landscape ecological security of Xishuangbanna in southwest China has become an essential factor affecting the cross-border ecological security in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Based on the change of land use in Xishuangbanna, with the help of "3S" technology, landscape ecology theory, and gray prediction model, the spatial and developmental trends of landscape ecological security in Xishuangbanna from 1996-2030 could be determined. In more than 20 years, the woodland landscape area in Xishuangbanna decreased, and the fragmentation of construction land has increased overall. In 1996, the overall landscape ecological safety was good, with 63.5% of the total area of grade I and II. In 2003, the proportion of the grade I and grade II areas decreased, with landscape ecological security problems appearing. In 2010, the overall landscape ecological security area reached 74.5%, the largest proportion in more than 20 years. The grade V area accounted for only 9% and was mainly distributed on the border of Menghai County and central Jinghong City. In 2017, The grade IV and V areas was further increased, and the ecological security problem intensified. The prediction results showed that from 2023 to 2030, the regions of grades I and II increased, but the proportion of level V regions increased. Furthermore, the grade IV transformed to grade V rapidly, reaching its highest value in more than 20 years. From 1996 to 2030, the landscape ecological security space significantly evolved, showing an evident "east-south" trend in movement and eventually shifting to the southeast.

    Abstract In a national park master plan, functional zoning plays a key role in developing differentiated zoning controls that achieve multiple park construction objectives. In this study, a geographical attribute code and basic zoning elements are developed for the proposed “Ailaoshan-Wuliangshan” National Park, followed by the development of spatial multi-criteria sets and weight sets to determine the suitability of the land. Next, we use a clustering algorithm and conflict unit prioritization to allocate space for multi-target units to get the preliminary zoning schemes, and then identify stable units and unstable units through sensitivity analysis. Ultimately, the functional zoning of the National Park was determined. According to the results, the proposed “Ailaoshan-Wuliangshan” National Park can be divided into nine types of 164 landscape units; the highest land suitability values of each zone showed the traits of differentiation and aggregation in spatial distribution; there are 97 stable units and 67 unstable units; approximately 62.83% and 37.17% of the total park area can be divided into core conservation area (primary sensitive area and secondary sensitive area) and general control area (ecological activity area and ecological control area). By implementing a comprehensive assessment and decision-making process, the defined functional zones are precise and simple to recognize on the ground, and they adhere to the area proportions needed by national standards. Furthermore, the functional zoning is clustered, which avoids the fragmentation of the zoning results causing difficulties in management, and serves as a point of reference for the functional zoning approaches used in other proposed national parks in China.

    Abstract The establishment of ecological networks facilitates genetic exchange among species in national parks and is an effective means of avoiding habitat fragmentation. Using the proposed “Ailaoshan-Wuliangshan” in Yunnan Province, China, as the study area, the identification of ecological source sites using the morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) method, extraction of potential ecological corridors using the minimum resistance model (MCR) and construction of the ecological network of national parks were performed. Based on the gravity model, important ecological corridors were selected, and corresponding ecological network optimization strategies were presented. The results showed that (1) the core area identified by MSPA was 4440.08 km 2 , with a low degree of fragmentation, and is distributed in strips within the woodland land classes in the study area; (2) the establishment of an ecological network model of least cost resistance based on 10 indicators in four dimensions of land tenure, geographic factors, vegetation characteristics, and human meddling; (3) the ecological network included 13 ecological source sites, 77 potential ecological corridors, 48 important ecological corridors and 25 pedestrian pathways and extracts an optimal ecological corridor connecting with the natural reserve; and (4) the network closure degree of the constructed ecological network was (1.18), line point rate (3.08), network connectivity (1.12), and cost ratio (0.98). By using the proposed ecological network construction method, ecological patches and potential corridors can be accurately identified to ensure the integrity and connectivity of the national park while minimizing the land demand pressure of the surrounding communities, which provides some reference for the construction of other national parks’ ecological networks in China.

    Abstract Abstract Purpose Although gender nonconformity (GNC) and transgender identity are both linked to bullying victimization, few studies have examined them with bullying victimization simultaneously. Using a sample of Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we investigated the associations of GNC and transgender identity with bullying victimization within the same study. Methods We analyzed data from the cross-sectional school-based Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2017 (n = 25,378). The exposures were GNC and transgender identity. The main outcomes were traditional victimization, cyber victimization, and combined victimization. We calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using Poisson regression models. Results There were 22.15% of high school students with GNC, and 1.61% identified themselves as transgender. GNC is associated with traditional (APR,1.45;95%CI, 1.21–1.73), cyber (APR,2.00; 95%CI, 1.66–2.40) and combined victimization (APR,1.61;95%CI, 1.42–1.83) respectively among assigned male at birth (AMAB) students only. Transgender male and female students are both at higher risk of bullying victimization for all the three outcomes than cisgender peers. Conclusions AMAB GNC and transgender identity are associated with a higher risk of bullying victimization. Providing support systems and celebrating gender diversity within and outside schools are important.
