Abstract Background. Aim of this bioinformatics study based on transcriptomic analysis was to reveal the cross-talk between periodontitis (PD) and hypothyroidism (HT). Methods. The gene expression datasets GSE18152 and GSE176153 of HT and GSE10334, GSE16134, and GSE173078 of PD were downloaded through the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differential Expression Genes (DEG) between cases and controls in each microarray were assessed by using the “limma” (linear models for microarray data) R package (|log2 fold change (FC)| >0 and P-value <0.05). To analyze the cross-talk effect between HT and PD, the intersection of DEG of HT and PD was selected. To investigate the biological function of cross-talk genes, the gene ontology (GO) functional enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were applied. Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) network was constructed using Cytoscape software. Top 10 cross-talk genes were screened, and the expression values of these 10 genes were extracted. ROC analysis was performed by using the pROC package and GGplot2 package of R language to predict the classification accuracy. Results. The overlapping DEG between HT and PD were 107 cross-talk genes. The results revealed that developmental process (P-value =1.06E-21) was the most significantly enriched biological process, followed by cell differentiation (P-value =8.49E-18) and immune system process (P-value =6.78E-11). KEGG analysis showed that Complement and coagulation cascades (P-value =2.29E-05), Hematopoietic cell lineage (P-value =2.66E-05), Phospholipase D signaling pathway (P-value =0.034367878) and Chemokine signaling pathway (P-value =0.04946333) were significantly enriched. The top 10 genes with most connections were LCE1B, LCE2B, LCE2A, LCE2C, LCE1C, LCE1F, ITGAM, C1QB, TREM2, and CD19. The AUC values of the two datasets of HT were both greater than 65% (GSE18152 = 81.42%, GSE176153 = 68.75%). AUC values of three datasets of PD were all greater than 60% (GSE10334 = 69.23%, GSE16134 ...

Abstract Study region: The Nagqu River Basin in the central part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, China. Study focus: Groundwater flow systems in permafrost regions are characterized by a unique circulation. Understanding the groundwater circulation mechanism is essential for studying the hydrological effect of permafrost degradation in alpine regions. In this study, potential water sources and origin of solutes in the groundwater of a typical alpine region were studied using hydrochemistry, 18O, 2H and 3H analyses. This research is essential for studying the hydrological effects of permafrost degradation. New hydrological insights for the region: Upon moving from the mountainous region to the plains, the renewal rate decreases from 10.5% to 0.6% and the mean transit time increases from 5–30 to 20–32 years. Groundwater is mainly recharged by ground ice meltwater and infiltration of glacier meltwater, snow meltwater and precipitation in mountainous areas, and by deep groundwater near faults. Discharge to surface water, evaporation, and overflow into springs are the main drainage modes. Water/ice–rock/soil interactions, such as dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals, are the main factors affecting the hydrochemical evolution. This study provides a data-driven approach for understanding groundwater recharge and evolution in similar systems.

Abstract This study evaluates the phenolic profile as well as the antioxidant properties of Shennongjia Apis cerana honey through a comparison with Apis mellifera honey in China. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranges from 263 ± 2 to 681 ± 36 mg gallic acid/kg. The total flavonoids content (TFC) ranges from 35.9 ± 0.4 to 102.2 ± 0.8 mg epicatechin/kg. The correlations between TPC or TFC and the antioxidant results (FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS) were found to be statistically significant ( p < 0.01). Furthermore, the phenolic compounds are quantified and qualified by high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS), and a total of 83 phenolic compounds were tentatively identified in this study. A metabolomics analysis based on the 83 polyphenols was carried out and subjected to principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis. The results showed that it was possible to distinguish Apis cerana honey from Apis mellifera honey based on the phenolic profile.

Abstract Aerobic composting is a sustainable method for chicken manure recycling, while its unsuitable porosity and carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) may result in high nitrogen loss and incomplete composting. With the aim to investigate the effects of carbon-based additives and two ventilation rates on chicken manure composting and microbial community, two series of treatments were set up for chicken manure composting, in order to investigate their effects on the biodegradation process, ammonia (NH3) emission, nitrogen loss, physiochemical properties and microbial community. The results showed that additives and ventilation rates set in the current study influenced the carbon dioxide (CO2) production from the 2nd week and also the physiochemical parameters during the entire process, while no inhibitory effect on the maturity were observed. With woody peat as additive, the NH3 emission amount and nitrogen loss rate were shown as 15.86 mg and 4.02%, less than those in other treatments, 31.08-80.13 mg and 24.26-34.24%, respectively. The high aeration rate increased the NH3 emission and nitrogen loss, which were varied when the additives were different. The terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) results showed that the additives and the ventilation rates changed the microbial community, while the prominent microbial clones belonged to the class of Bacilli and Clostridia (in the phylum of Firmicutes), and Alphaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria (in the phylum of Proteobacteria). Bacillus spp. was observed to be the most dominant bacteria in all the composting stages and treatments. It was concluded that woody peat could improve chicken manure composting more than other additives, especially on reducing nitrogen loss, meanwhile 0.18 L‧min-1‧kg-1 DM was suitable for various additives. Therefore, suitable additive and aeration rate could be used in practical application, which could significantly reduce nitrogen loss without influence on the compos maturity process.

Abstract Study region: The Nagqu River watershed (NRW) on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). Study focus: Precipitation, snowmelt, streamflow, and groundwater samples were collected in the NRW and used to analyze the contribution of different water sources to streamflow during different freeze–thaw periods. Stable isotopes of hydrogen (D) and oxygen (18O) and water chemistry were analyzed for the period ranging from 2016 to 2019, and tritium (T) and carbon-14 (14C) isotopes were analyzed for 2019. New hydrological insights for the region: Rain and snowmelt were found to reflect the chemical characteristics of precipitation, and the primary ions in both water types were Ca2+ and SO42−. The δD and δ18O isotope values of rain and snowmelt were relatively low during the entire thaw period (from June to October) and relatively high in the entire frozen period (from November to May). The results of the optimum multiparameter and mass balance analyses showed that groundwater and snowmelt accounted for approximately 39.8 % and 32.2 % to the Nagqu River water flow, respectively, whereas precipitation accounted for approximately 28.0 %. The groundwater in clastic rock fissures around the northern Cuona Lake, and permafrost and ground ice in the bedrock layer were identified as older water types with relatively low infiltration rates, and bedrock fissures in the southeastern and southwestern areas contained younger water with better recoverability.

Abstract The data from a total of 200 children with suspected influenza virus infection were assessed at the febrile clinic of Women and Children’s hospital in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province from January 2018 to March 2019, and the patients were belonged to two groups (peramivir treatment group and oseltamivir treatment group). At the same time, 100 patients without special treatment were evaluated as the control group. We observed the patients’ fever relief time, pharyngeal pain relief time, nasal congestion relief time, runny nose symptoms relief time, days of hospitalization, days of medication, cost of medication, and adverse reactions in the three groups. We analyzed and compared the efficacy and adverse reactions of peramivir and oseltamivir in the treatment of children suspected with influenza. The recovery of body temperature, relief of cough, days of medication, and hospitalization period in the peramivir group were significantly shorter compared to the oseltamivir and control groups. The mean times to alleviation of fever in the three groups were 18.28 ± 17.74 h (peramivir group), 48.20 ± 34.28 h (oseltamivir group), and 72.56 ± 25.78 h (control group). The mean times to alleviation of cough in the three groups were 49.77 ± 27.58 h (peramivir group), 68.53 ± 32.54 h (oseltamivir group), and 59.38 ± 31.26 (control group). The cost of the peramivir group was significantly higher than that of the oseltamivir and control groups. The incidence of drug reactions in the peramivir group was significantly lower than that in the oseltamivir group. The rate of antibiotic usage in the peramivir group was significantly lower than that in the oseltamivir and control groups. Peramivir can significantly alleviate symptoms and reduce the use of antibiotics in children with suspected influenza. Peramivir has demonstrated good efficacy, high safety, and good compliance in treating children with suspected influenza infection.

Abstract Study region: The Nagqu River Watershed in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Study focus: A computational unit is the basic spatial unit employed in distributed hydrological models (DHMs), which combines the spatiotemporal distributions of meteorological variables and physical parameters denoted within a region to reveal the characteristics affecting the water cycle of watersheds. However, the current methods developed for spatially divided regions into computational units fail to consider the physical meaning and impact of climate change in montane altitudinal zones (MAZs), which significantly affects alpine watersheds. This study proposes a method for assigning the computational units of alpine DHMs according to one-period MAZ that explicitly account for physical meaning and climate change. New hydrological insights for the region: The benefits of the proposed altitudinal discretization method are verified by applying it to construct a DHM based on the water and energy transfer processes in large river basins (WEP-L) models. The results obtained using the WEP-L, SWAT model and the new regional division method (denoted as the WEP-C model) that applies the proposed altitudinal discretization method are compared. The results demonstrate that the simulation accuracy of the daily and monthly streamflows and daily soil moisture from the alpine watershed is improved by the use of the proposed altitudinal discretization method, which provide guidance for further DHM development and can be applied to other hydrological models.

Abstract Objective Secondary infection, especially bloodstream infection, is an important cause of death in critically ill patients with COVID-19. We aimed to describe secondary bloodstream infection (SBI) in critically ill adults with COVID-19 in the intensive care unit (ICU) and to explore risk factors related to SBI. Methods We reviewed all SBI cases among critically ill patients with COVID-19 from 12 February 2020 to 24 March 2020 in the COVID-19 ICU of Jingmen First People's Hospital. We compared risk factors associated with bloodstream infection in this study. All SBIs were confirmed by blood culture. Results We identified five cases of SBI among the 32 patients: three with Enterococcus faecium , one mixed septicemia ( E. faecium and Candida albicans ), and one C. parapsilosis . There were no significant differences between the SBI group and non-SBI group. Significant risk factors for SBI were extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, central venous catheter, indwelling urethral catheter, and nasogastric tube. Conclusions Our findings confirmed that the incidence of secondary infection, particularly SBI, and mortality are high among critically ill patients with COVID-19. We showed that long-term hospitalization and invasive procedures such as tracheotomy, central venous catheter, indwelling urethral catheter, and nasogastric tube are risk factors for SBI and other complications.

Abstract The non-pathogenic Human Pegivirus (HPgV, formerly GBV-C/HGV), the most prevalent RNA virus worldwide, is known to be associated with reduced morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected individuals. Although previous studies documented its ubiquity and important role in HIV-infected individuals, little is known about the underlying genetic mechanisms that maintain high genetic diversity of HPgV within the HIV-infected individuals. To assess the within-host genetic diversity of HPgV and forces that maintain such diversity within the co-infected hosts, we performed phylogenetic analyses taking into account 229 HPgV partial E1-E2 clonal sequences representing 15 male and 8 female co-infected HIV patients from Hubei province of central China. Our results revealed the presence of eleven strongly supported clades. While nine clades belonged to genotype 3, two clades belonged to genotype 2. Additionally, four clades that belonged to genotype 3 exhibited inter-clade recombination events. The presence of clonal sequences representing multiple clades within the HIV-infected individual provided the evidence of co-circulation of HPgV strains across the region. Of the 23 patients, six patients (i.e., five males and one female) were detected to have HPgV recombinant sequences. Our results also revealed that while male patients shared the viral strains with other patients, viral strains from the female patients had restricted dispersal. Taken together, the present study revealed that multiple infections with divergent HPgV viral strains may have caused within-host genetic recombination, predominantly in male patients, and therefore, could be the major driver in shaping genetic diversity of HPgV.
