Abstract Abstract A retrospective study was conducted to investigate a convenient simple scoring system for the prediction of early pregnancy loss (EPL) based on simple demographics. A total of 13,977 women undergoing transvaginal ultrasound scans on Days 27–29 after in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) from June 2016 and December 2017 were included. The first trimester pregnancy outcome was recorded at 12 weeks of gestation. The areas under the curve of this scoring system were 0.884 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.870–0.899) and 0.890 (95% CI 0.878–0.903) in the training set and test set, respectively. The score totals ranged from -8 to 14 points. A score of 5 points, which offered the highest predictive accuracy (94.01%) and corresponded to a 30% miscarriage risk, was chosen as the cutoff value, with a sensitivity of 62.84%, specificity of 98.79%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 88.87% and negative predictive value (NPV) of 94.54% for the prediction of EPL in the training set. In the test set, a score of 5 points had a sensitivity of 64.69%, specificity of 98.78%, PPV of 89.87% and NPV of 93.62%, and 93.91% of the cases were correctly predicted. Therefore, the simple scoring system using conventionally collected data can be conveniently used to predict EPL after ET. However, considering the limitations, its predictive value needs to be further verified in future clinical practice.

Abstract Objective: Xingnaojing injection (XNJ) is a popular medicine derived from traditional Chinese patent medicine and is frequently used to treat brain diseases. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the efficacy of XNJ in the treatment of sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). Methods: An extensive research was performed on XNJ for treating SAE within eight databases up to April 2022. The Cochrane standards are adopted for study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and meta-analysis, and RevMan5.4 was utilized for meta-analysis. Results: There were 9 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 689 subjects in this review. According to the meta-analysis, combining XNJ with conventional treatment was more efficient in terms of total efficacy (RR = 1.28; 95% CI, 1.18–1.39; P < 0.00001) and lower level of PCT (MD = −20.14; 95% CI, −21.35 to −18.92; P < 0.00001) than conventional treatment alone. There were no reports of adverse drug reactions in any of the studies. Conclusion: We believe that combining XNJ with conventional treatments could be beneficial in the treatment of SAE. There are currently a number of methodological issues in the studies. Therefore, high-quality, large-scale RCTs are definitely required.

Abstract Programmed cell death is an active extinction process, including autophagy, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis. m6A is a reversible RNA modification which undergoes methylation under the action of methylases (writers), and is demethylated under the action of demethylases (erasers). The RNA base site at which m6A is modified is recognized by specialized enzymes (readers) which regulate downstream RNA translation, decay, and stability. m6A affects many aspects of mRNA metabolism, and also plays an important role in promoting the maturation of miRNA, the translation and degradation of circRNA, and the stability of lncRNA. The regulatory factors including writers, erasers and readers promote or inhibit programmed cell death via up-regulating or down-regulating downstream targets in a m6A-dependent manner to participate in the process of disease. In this review, we summarize the functions of m6A with particular reference to its role in programmed cell death.

Abstract Abstract Unicornuate uteri are associated with infertility, miscarriage, preterm delivery and even uterine rupture. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of unicornuate uterine anomaly on twin pregnancies after in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). A total of 206 women with unicornuate uteri (A singleton, B selective reduction (SR) of twins to a singleton, C twins) and 314 women with normal uteri (D SR of twins to a singleton, E twins) who delivered at ≥22 weeks were included. C was associated with a significantly lower live birth rate (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.01–0.69) and higher risks of preterm delivery (aOR 11.63, 95% CI, 4.85–27.92), perinatal mortality (aOR 11.43, 95% CI, 1.44–90.57) and low birth weight (aOR 5.92, 95% CI 1.94–18.06) than A, a 15-fold greater risk of preterm delivery (aOR 15.54, 95% CI 3.09–78.28) than B and a greater risk of preterm delivery (aOR 2.76, 95% CI 1.33–5.73) than E. After SR to a singleton, the perinatal outcomes were statistically similar between B and D. These results showed that the risk of twin pregnancies should be minimized in patients with unicornuate uterine anomaly undergoing IVF-ET.

Abstract Persimmons are popular worldwide owning to their unique flavor and nutritional value, while for the astringent cultivars, deastringency treatment is needed before processing. The current deastringency methods are limited to CO2 and ethanol. The aim of this work was to select optimal deastringency methods and assess the bioavailability of polyphenols in persimmon peels treated with 12 different combination of CO2 and ethanol. The level of soluble and insoluble tannins, total polyphenols bioaccessibility, antioxidant properties, color, and soluble solids were also determined. Results indicated that soluble tannin contents decreased with increasing ethanol concentration, and with an increase in carbon dioxide concentration, the insoluble tannins content increased. Application of 30% ethanol solution and 80% carbon dioxide for 24 hr has a best deastringency effect, while this treatment does not show good phenolics bioaccessibility and antioxidant activity. Therefore, the combination of 30% ethanol solution with 70% CO2 fumigation for 24 hr at 10 °C is the best deastringency method. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This project invented a novel deastringency method by CO2 and ethanol combination, with a feature of applying to lower temperature. The aim of this work was to select optimal deastringency methods and assess the bioavailability of polyphenols in persimmon peels treated with 12 different combination of CO2 and ethanol.

Abstract Abstract Bacterial wilt as a soil-borne disease was caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, and seriously damages the growth of tobacco. Integrated biocontrol method was explored to control bacterial wilt. Nevertheless, the long-term effects of the integrated biocontrol method on soil bacterial community, soil physicochemical properties and the incidence of bacterial wilt are not well understood. In this study, B. amyoliquefaciens ZM9, calcium cyanamide and rice bran were applied to tobacco fields in different ways. The disease index and incidence of tobacco bacterial wilt (TBW), soil physicochemical properties, colonization ability of B. amyoliquefaciens ZM9, and rhizopshere bacterial community were investigated. The results showed that the integrated application of B. amyoliquefaciens ZM9, rice bran and calcium cyanamide had the highest control efficiency of TBW and bacteria community diversity. Additionally, the integrated biocontrol method could improve the colonization ability of B. amyoliquefaciens ZM9. Furthermore, the integrated biocontrol method could effectively suppress TBW by regulating soil physicochemical properties, promoting beneficial bacteria and antagonistic bacteria of rhizopshere soil. This strategy has prospect of overcoming the defects in application of a single antagonistic bacteria and provides new insights to understand how to improve the colonization capacity of antagonistic bacteria and control efficacy for TBW.

Abstract Peaches (Prunus persica) were packaged in two kinds of gas environments: the steady‐state controlled atmosphere (CA) of 10% O₂ and the modified atmosphere (MA) of polyethylene bag. Based on 1ºC, storage temperature was set four fluctuation values: 1 ± 0ºC, 1 ± 0.5ºC, 1 ± 1ºC and 1 ± 2ºC. Results indicate that postharvest quality of peach under temperature without any fluctuation (1 ± 0ºC) was effectively maintained by reducing respiration rate and polyphenol oxidase activity. The total soluble solid content and superoxide dismutase activity were considerable high at constant temperature. Temperature fluctuations were not conducive to quality maintenance of peach during storage. The combination of constant temperature and MA significantly hold the pulp firmness and overall sensory quality. Peaches were suitable for MA storage of polyethylene (PE) bag, in comparison to CA storage of 10% O₂. The present study provided a theoretical basis for peach during cold storage (CS). PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Peach fruit ripen and deteriorate quickly at ambient temperature. CS, CA and MA are effective methods to slow ripening and reduce decay development after harvest. The reliability of atmosphere packaging depends on rigorous temperature control. However, temperature is not always constant during transportation and storage, and temperature fluctuation (TF) means an alteration in fruit respiration and gas transmission. Because of its high metabolic activity, peach is sensitive to TF particularly. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of TF treatment combining with CA or MA on quality characteristics of peach. In general, peach was suitable for storage in MA of PE bag and the storage temperature without any fluctuation could delay ripening and improve the edible quality of peach.

Abstract CONTEXT:There is no consensus regarding the association between maternal obesity or overweight and cerebral palsy (CP) in children. OBJECTIVES:To investigate whether maternal obesity or overweight is associated with CP and identify the factors that explain the differences in the study results. DATA SOURCES:We conducted a meta-analysis of studies published in English with titles or abstracts that discussed the relationships between maternal obesity or overweight and CP before August 23, 2017, using Ovid Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science. STUDY SELECTION:Of 2699 initially identified studies, 8 studies that addressed the association between maternal obesity and CP met our final inclusion criteria. DATA EXTRACTION:Information from the individual studies was abstracted using standardized forms by 2 independent observers who were blinded to the authors' names and journal titles. DATA SYNTHESIS:According to a random effects model, maternal overweight was significantly associated with CP in offspring [RR = 1.29 (95% CI, 1.04-1.60), heterogeneity (I2 = 45.5%, P = 0.103)]; maternal obesity was significantly associated with CP in offspring [RR = 1.45 (95% CI, 1.25-1.69), heterogeneity (I2 = 24.1%, P = 0.253)]; and maternal obesity III was significantly associated with CP in offspring [RR = 2.25 (95% CI, 1.82-2.79), heterogeneity (I2 = 0%, P = 0.589)]. However, maternal underweight was not significantly associated with CP in offspring [RR = 1.11 (95% CI, 0.88-1.38), low heterogeneity (I2 = 0%, P = 0.435)]. Factors that explained the differences in the meta-analysis results included study design, study location, and whether individual studies adjusted for potential confounders. CONCLUSION:This study suggests that maternal obesity and overweight increase the risk of CP in offspring. Further studies are required to confirm these results and determine the influence of variables across studies.

Abstract Context No consensus exists regarding the association between maternal chorioamnionitis and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm and very preterm neonates. Objectives To investigate whether maternal chorioamnionitis affects neurodevelopmental outcomes and to identify the factors that may explain these effects. Data sources We used Ovid Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science to conduct a meta-analysis of studies published in English before August 25, 2017, with titles or abstracts that discussed an association between maternal chorioamnionitis and mental/motor development. Study selection Among the 603 initially identified studies, we selected those that addressed an association between maternal chorioamnionitis and mental/motor development according to our preselected inclusion criteria as follows: (1) the study compared infants with and without exposure to maternal chorioamnionitis and (2) the neurodevelopmental outcome was followed up using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development 2nd edition. Data synthesis Our meta-analysis included 10 studies. According to a random effect model, infants with maternal chorioamnionitis exposure had poorer mental development (d = -2.25 [95%CI, -4.33, -0.17], p<0.05) than infants without maternal chorioamnionitis, and infants with maternal clinical chorioamnionitis exposure had poorer motor development (d = -2.37 [95%CI, -4.62 to -0.12], p<0.05) than infants without maternal clinical chorioamnionitis exposure. Factors in the meta-analysis that showed differences between the two patient groups included an MDI assessment blinded to medical history, MDI assessment at the correct age, and time of the MDI assessment. Conclusion This study suggests that maternal chorioamnionitis may affect mental development in preterm and very preterm neonates, and that maternal clinical chorioamnionitis may affect motor development in offspring. Further studies are required to confirm these results and to detect the influence of variables across studies.
