    Abstract Researcher identity has been widely studied as central to doctoral education. However, little is known about students’ emic conceptualization of what represents researcher identity based on their lived experience. Using a sample of 24 Chinese doctoral students in Australia, this study adopts volunteer-employed photography (VEP) to facilitate the participants’ delineation of their researcher identity. Findings reveal that researcher identity is indexed at three levels: belonging as being, doing as becoming, and limited limitlessness. It presents itself as a complex formulating process in which dichotomous, yet mutually constitutive, forces collide and merge. This study concretizes perceptions about the notion of researcher identity through photographs and corresponding revelatory dialogues in relation to people, objects, feelings, phenomena, and relationships. Some insights on visual research methodology are also discussed.

    Abstract The rationale for this article derives from a personal anecdote embedded within the challenging discourse of endeavoring to identify and attach meaning to the concept of a “beautiful female something.” The focused analysis provided here about this stereotypical label reveals a dimension of patriarchal chauvinism that directs the way in which the interpretation of a “beautiful female something” can become socioculturally and universally entrenched. This article expands this concept by stating that the proliferation of this label can be traced in large part to the power pathology of a burgeoning social media that exploits the concept of beauty to the advantage of global consumerism. Developing the analytic articulation found within Bourdieu’s capitals theory, this study contends that the label of a “beautiful female something” functions as both a modality of symbolic capital and symbolic violence. The article ends with a discussion of this paradox and proposes to analyze the covert social mechanisms and conflicting forces that underpin the exploitation of consumerist approaches to female beauty across the globe.

    Abstract Education for sustainable development in foreign language teaching and learning impacts students’ lives in their current or future endeavours. Despite a wide body of literature elucidating identity navigation of EFL teachers and international doctoral students, a relative scarcity of scholarship casts light on the in-between cohort, namely those who transit from the former to the latter. Via a holistic lens, utilising a qualitative case study based on an Australian university, this research scrutinised how a group of 10 international doctoral students who served as EFL teachers in their home countries enacted agency to navigate the identity transition. The study discusses what generally constitutes sustainable, successful language learning and teaching practices in different social, cultural, and educational contexts. The findings reveal that torn between teaching English as an expert and learning research as a novice, they negotiated the identity transition as a “doing” process subject to different positionings and structural contexts and mediated by various dynamics across a past–present–future trajectory. This study contributes to pertinent literature by shedding nuanced and holistic light on the under-researched topic of teacher-to-student identity transition. It ends with implications for attending to EFL teachers’ complex lived experiences to promote sustainable development in EFL teaching and learning.

    Abstract Traffic flow prediction is an important part of intelligent transportation systems. In recent years, most methods have considered only the feature relationships of spatial dimensions of traffic flow data, and ignored the feature fusion of spatial and temporal aspects. Traffic flow has the features of periodicity, nonlinearity and complexity. There are many relatively isolated points in the nodes of traffic flow, resulting in the features usually being accompanied by high-frequency noise. The previous methods directly used the graph convolution network for feature extraction. A polynomial approximation graph convolution network is essentially a convolution operation to enhance the weight of high-frequency signals, which lead to excessive high-frequency noise and reduce prediction accuracy to a certain extent. In this paper, a deep learning framework is proposed for a causal gated low-pass graph convolution neural network (CGLGCN) for traffic flow prediction. The full convolution structure adopted by the causal convolution gated linear unit (C-GLU) extracts the time features of traffic flow to avoid the problem of long running time associated with recursive networks. The reduction of running parameters and running time greatly improved the efficiency of the model. The new graph convolution neural network with self-designed low-pass filter was able to extract spatial features, enhance the weight of low-frequency signal features, suppress the influence of high-frequency noise, extract the spatial features of each node more comprehensively, and improve the prediction accuracy of the framework. Several experiments were carried out on two real-world real data sets. Compared with the existing models, our model achieved better results for short-term and long-term prediction.

    Abstract Background and aims Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) remains an investigational issue for early gastric cancer (EGC) with expanded indications owing to the risk of lymph node metastasis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and safety of ESD versus surgical resection (SR) for EGC with expanded indications.Methods The systematic review selected studies from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science databases from 2010 to 2020, and compared survival and clinical safety data of ESD with those of surgical resection for EGC with expanded indications. The fixed-effects or random-effects model was used to calculate the differences between the two groups. To assess the validity of the eligible studies, risk of bias was measured using the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale.Results Nine retrospective studies were used to calculate the differences in survival and clinical safety data between the two groups for EGC with expanded indications. Differences were not significant between the groups in terms of age, sex, tumour size, tumour histology or lesion morphology. Regarding tumour site, tumours located in the L area (the lower third of the stomach) were more likely to be found in the ESD group. With regard to metachronous and synchronous carcinomas, there was a significant difference favouring SR treatment (metachronous: OR=0.12, 95% CI=0.05 to 0.25, p<0.00001; synchronous: OR=0.11, 95% CI=0.02 to 0.46, p=0.003). Adverse event data were identified in six studies showing a significant difference favouring ESD treatment (ESD vs SR, OR=0.49, 95% CI=0.34 to 0.72. p=0.002). Additionally, six studies evaluating 5-year overall survival showed no significant differences between the two groups (HR=1.22, 95% CI=0.66 to 2.25, p=0.53). With regard to 5-year disease-free survival, patients with expanded indication EGC undergoing SR showed better survival (ESD vs SR, HR=3.29, 95% CI=1.60 to 6.76, p=0.001).Conclusion ESD provided favourable results for patients with EGC with expanded indications ...

    Abstract Water is one of the most important factors limiting vegetation recovery and agricultural development in arid and semi-arid areas. The reduction of ineffective soil evaporation can improve soil water use efficiency. As a kind of clay mineral, attapulgite (ATP) plays a critical role in limiting soil evaporation due to its hydrophilicity and adsorption. In this study, three typical soils with different textures (dark loessial soil, cultivated loess soil, and sandy soil) were selected from the arid and semi-arid area of the Loess Plateau, and five ATP additions (0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4%) were set for conducting soil evaporation experiments under natural conditions using micro-evaporators to investigate the effects of ATP addition on different soil evaporation processes and the characteristics of evaporation surface cracks. The results showed that the cumulative evaporation and evaporation loss ratio of the same soil decreased with the increases of ATP addition when the ATP addition was <3%. When ATP was added at 3%, the cumulative evaporation and evaporation loss ratio of dark loessial soil and sandy soil decreased, while those of cultivated loess soil increased. When ATP was added at 4%, the cumulative evaporation decreased and the evaporation loss ratio increased for dark loessial soil, the cumulative evaporation increased and the evaporation loss ratio decreased for sandy soil, and the cumulative evaporation and evaporation loss ratio decreased for cultivated loess soil. The average cumulative evaporation of different soils followed an order of dark loessial soil > cultivated loess soil > sandy soil. Soil water content of ATP treatment was consistently higher than that of control throughout the whole evaporation process in the same soil. Simulations of cumulative evaporation versus the square root of time indicated that the amount of water released from the ATP-treated soil samples at the end of evaporation was higher than that of the control. After the addition of ATP, the crack area density of dark loessial soil and cultivated loess soil increased significantly, and the crack area density of sandy soil increased with the increase of ATP addition. The crack area density of all three soils reached the maximum at 4% of ATP addition. In summary, ATP addition of 3% could minimize the ineffective evaporation of soil water.

    Abstract Selective catalytic conversion of carbohydrates to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is a critical approach to the biorefinery. In this work, solid acid catalysts of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ were used to convert carbohydrates to EMF in a one-pot process, performed in an ethanol/DMSO solvent system. The synergistic effect of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ was studied. Furthermore, the morpho-structural properties of the catalysts were characterized, and the effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, catalyst load, and the amount of cosolvent on the conversion of glucose to EMF were examined and optimized. Under the reaction conditions of 170 °C for 20 h, glucose, sucrose, cellobiose, inulin and starch were used as raw materials, and the EMF yield range was 9.2–27.7%. The results showed that the synergistic effect of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ further causes the combination of multiple acid sites with different types and strength distributions. Particularly, the collaboration between weak, medium-strong, and strong acid, as well as between Lewis and Brønsted acidity, is of great significance for EMF generation. The reusability experiments showed that the combined catalytic system was easily separated and maintained catalytic activity for five successive reactions without further intermediate regeneration steps. This work provides a promising route for the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into EMF.

    Abstract The present study was conducted to compare the effect of two barnyard millet varieties viz. Echinochloa frumentacea (L.) (HNJZ) and Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) var. austro-japonensis (BZ), on fertility and physicochemical properties of alkaline soil of Ningxia, China. Soil rhizosphere of BZ and HNJZ with three replicates (5 plants from each replicate) were collected for bacterial communities metagenomic profiling and six rhizosphere soil samples from each treatment for untargeted-metabolomic analysis. Results revealed significant ( p < 0.05) improvement in soil fertility for both millet varieties at 0–20 cm depth than 20–40 cm by decreasing the alkalinity and pH, while increasing the organic matter. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the most abundant phyla, whereas Megamonas, uncharacterized_Acidobacteria, and Halomonas were the most abundant genera. No difference in bacterial alpha diversity parameters was observed between HNJZ and BZ rhizospheres. Relative abundance of Cellvibrio and Devosia was increased ( p < 0.05) in HNJZ, while Arenimonas, Gillisia, Sphingomonas, uncharacterized_Gammaproteobacteria, and Lysobacter were increased significantly ( p < 0.05) in BZ rhizospheres. Beta diversity analysis revealed more diverse bacterial communities structure in HNJZ rhizosphere with higher Firmicutes ratio. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis revealed biosynthesis of alkaloids, histamine H2/H3 receptor agonists/antagonists, and arginine/proline metabolism as top three enriched KEGG pathways. The present study indicated that both millet varieties contributed to the reclamation of saline-alkali soil through reducing pH, total salts, and alkalinity while increasing the organic matter.

    Abstract Biological improvement is a sustainable approach for saline–alkali land amelioration and utilization. Echinochloa frumentacea (Roxb.) link is a salt-tolerant gramineous forage, which plays an important role in improving saline–alkali land. The Hetao Ningxia Plain is located in the upper–middle reaches of the Yellow River with a large area of saline–alkali soil, where E. frumentacea has potential applications for improving saline–alkali land. Three experiments were conducted on saline–alkali land in Pingluo County, Ningxia, including soil-leaching experiments in pots as well as monoculture or intercropping experiments involving E. frumentacea in fields. The results showed that: (1) E. frumentacea had a strong leaching ability of Na + and SO 4 2− in saline–alkali soil. (2) The planting of E. frumentacea decreased soil pH and total salt; enhanced the available N, P and K; and increased plant height, stem thickness and yields compared with the control. (3) The diversity of soil bacteria and land use efficiency could be improved by the intercropping of E. frumentacea with legume forages. Overall, E. frumentacea is an important pioneer species of biological improvement for the sustainable utilization of secondary saline–alkali land produced by irrigation around the world.
