    Abstract Despite widespread and striking examples of physiological oscillations, their functional role is often unclear. Even glycolysis, the paradigm example of oscillatory biochemistry, has seen questions about its oscillatory function. Here, we take a systems approach to argue that oscillations play critical physiological roles, such as enabling systems to avoid desensitization, to avoid chronically high and therefore toxic levels of chemicals, and to become more resistant to noise. Oscillation also enables complex physiological systems to reconcile incompatible conditions such as oxidation and reduction, by cycling between them, and to synchronize the oscillations of many small units into one large effect. In pancreatic β-cells, glycolytic oscillations synchronize with calcium and mitochondrial oscillations to drive pulsatile insulin release, critical for liver regulation of glucose. In addition, oscillation can keep biological time, essential for embryonic development in promoting cell diversity and pattern formation. The functional importance of oscillatory processes requires a re-thinking of the traditional doctrine of homeostasis, holding that physiological quantities are maintained at constant equilibrium values, a view that has largely failed in the clinic. A more dynamic approach will initiate a paradigm shift in our view of health and disease. A deeper look into the mechanisms that create, sustain and abolish oscillatory processes requires the language of nonlinear dynamics, well beyond the linearization techniques of equilibrium control theory. Nonlinear dynamics enables us to identify oscillatory ('pacemaking') mechanisms at the cellular, tissue and system levels.

    Abstract As an extension of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart city is a new aim for applications used in different industrial aspects. Intelligent IoT devices are used everywhere in smart cities to implement the functions such as monitoring and managing. Smart grid is one of the critical parts. Obtaining the quantity and cost of electricity usage is the most critical task of the smart grid. But such data in plaintext may leak the user privacy. So, it is an emergent aim to protect the private information of the user. Thus, we present a secure scheme for the smart grid, which not only protects the user’s information including identity and power consumption in the communications but also tracks the correct electricity cost for each user. Also, electricity consumption data from users could be aggregated in fog devices and then analyzed by the utility provider. The formal proof shows that the message transmission reaches the security level of the chosen plaintext attack (CPA). Also, the security properties of the scheme express the robustness. Finally, the performance study demonstrates that the proposed protocol is acceptable in practice.

    Abstract Background: Lacosamide (LCM) has shown promising efficacy and safety outcomes in clinical trials. However, the evidence is limited among pediatric patients especially under four years in real-world. The study investigated the treatment outcomes and safety of LCM in patients under four years based on the data of the epilepsy registry of Children in China.
    Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted among patients under 4 years who newly received LCM as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy. The treatment outcomes were measured by retention rate of LCM, 50 % response rates and seizure-free rates during follow-up. The retention rate of LCM was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier survival model. Adverse events were reported as a percentage of all participants.
    Results: Of 109 participants (mean follow-up: 18.6 months), 59 received LCM as monotherapy and 50 as adjunctive therapy. Sixty patients had focal epilepsy, 44 had generalized epilepsy and 5 had combined generalized and focal epilepsy. 70 % of patients in the monotherapy group and 41 % in the adjunctive therapy group remained on LCM treatment without additional treatments for at least one year. In patients with monotherapy, 50 % response rate and seizure-free rate were 75 % and 56 % at 12 months, respectively. In adjunctive therapy group, these rates were 51 % and 36 %, respectively. Lower baseline seizure frequency in both treatment groups (monotherapy: p < 0.001; adjunctive therapy: p = 0.02) and younger age groups within the monotherapy group (P = 0.04) correlated with a higher LCM retention rate. Adverse events were reported by 15 patients (13.8 %), with somnolence being the most common (7 of 15 patients).
    Conclusion: With a comprehensive information and high-quality of data, the study demonstrates the effective treatment outcome and safety of LCM. The study adds reliable evidence to exiting real-word evidence of LCM in the specific age group of patients with epilepsy to fill the evidence gap.

    Abstract Background: CMTM6 which is chemokine-like factor (CKLF)-like Marvel transmembrane domain containing family member 6 is involved in the occurrence and progression of various tumors. However, the role of CMTM6 is still unclear in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).
    Methods: Immunohistochemical, Western blotting and RT‒PCR methods were used to detect the expression of CMTM6 in LUAD. Cox regression and the Kaplan‒Meier method were performed to assess overall survival. Immunogenic features were evaluated according to immune cell infiltrations, immune checkpoints. The sensitivity to chemotherapy agents was estimated using the pRRophetic package.
    Results: In LUAD, the expression of CMTM6 was obviously upregulated and was significantly associated with T stage (
    Conclusion: This study confirmed that CMTM6 is highly expressed in LUAD and is a new independent poor prognostic factor. In addition, the high expression of CMTM6 is closely related to the tumor microenvironment and immunotherapy, providing new ideas for the treatment of posterior LUAD.

    Abstract Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for adenomyotic patients with primary infertility and to explore the factors that affect the pregnancy outcomes.
    Materials and methods: Twenty-seven adenomyotic patients with primary infertility who underwent HIFU at HUNAN Provincial Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, China, between July 2018 and December 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated the pregnancy outcomes and analyzed the factors that may affect pregnancy outcomes including time to conception, pregnancy approach, gestational age, delivery mode, neonatal outcomes, and complications during pregnancy and delivery.
    Results: Among the 27 adenomyotic patients with primary infertility, 10 patients had a total of 11 pregnancies after HIFU treatment. Of these, eight (72%) cases were natural pregnancies and three (23%) were
    Conclusions: HIFU treatment for adenomyosis could improve fertility of patients with primary infertility. HIFU is a promising therapeutic approach for patients with adenomyosis and infertility who wish to achieve pregnancy and have live birth deliveries.

    Abstract The adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) sits at a central node in the regulation of energy metabolism and tumor progression. AMPK is best known to sense high cellular ADP or AMP levels, which indicate the depletion of energy stores. Previous studies have shown that the low expression of phosphorylated AMPK is associated with a poor prognosis of pancreatic cancer. In this study, we report that AMPK is also highly sensitive to extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness. We found that AMPK is activated in cells when cultured under low ECM stiffness conditions and is functionally required for the metabolic switch induced by ECM stiffness. This regulation of AMPK requires the Hippo kinases but not LKB1/CaMKKβ. Hippo kinases directly phosphorylate AMPKα at Thr172 to activate AMPK at low ECM stiffness. Furthermore, we found AMPK activity is inhibited in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with high ECM stiffness and is associated with a poor survival outcome. The activation of Hippo kinases by ROCK inhibitor Y-27632 in combination with the mitochondrial inhibitor metformin synergistically activates AMPK and dramatically inhibits PDAC growth. Together, these findings establish a novel model for AMPK regulation by the mechanical properties of ECMs and provide a rationale for simultaneously targeting the ECM stiffness–Hippo kinases–AMPK signaling and low glucose–LKB1–AMPK signaling pathways as an effective therapeutic strategy against PDAC.

    Abstract Vegetation greenness change is the result of the combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. Understanding how these factors individually and collectively affect vegetation dynamics and whether their spatial heterogeneity has any effect on vegetation greenness change is the crucial investigation area. Previous studies revealed the distinct characteristics of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the impact factors influencing vegetation greenness change across various regions, often assuming a linear contribution mechanism between vegetation greenness change and these drivers. However, such a simplistic assumption fails to adequately capture the real-world dynamics of vegetation greenness change. Thus, this study firstly used geographical detector (Geodetector) to quantitatively measure the contribution of each factor to vegetation greenness change considering spatial heterogeneity in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) during the growing season from 2000 to 2020, then selecting significant factors from numerous drivers with the recursive feature elimination algorithm combined with a random forest model (RFE-RF), which is able to reduce redundant features in the data and prevent overfitting. Finally, four stable impact factors and the spatial heterogeneity of some factors contributing to vegetation greenness change were identified. The results show that approximately 83% of the regional vegetation has shown an overall increasing trend, while areas undergoing rapid development predominantly experienced a decline in greenness. Single factor screened by Geodetector with the explanatory power greater than 10% for vegetation greenness change included temperature (Tem), population density (PD), the land-use/land-cover (LULC), DEM, wind speed, and slope. The RFE-RF method identified precipitation (Pre) and CO 2 emissions as additional influential factors for vegetation greenness change, in addition to the first four factors mentioned previously.     Abstract Promoting sustainable urban development is crucial in light of upcoming environmental change and population expansion. Urban forests play a key role in transporting ecosystem services to urban areas. They not only offer a crucial biological setting for preserving urban biodiversity, but they also give recreation dwellers access to a variety of urban opportunities and ensure their spiritual and cultural needs are met. Maintaining urban biodiversity and offering recreation services have trade-offs and synergies, and both were highly connected with the size of an urban forest patch. Six districts in Beijing’s central urban area were chosen for this study to serve as the research objective. First, the MSPA model was employed to conduct a thorough scientific analysis of the pattern and distribution characteristics of urban forests in Beijing’s central urban area. Second, the recreation services were quantified by merging many sources of big data, the urban forest biodiversity preservation services were assessed using the InVEST model, and the spatial heterogeneity of the two services was examined. In conclusion, the coupling coordination degree model was utilized to calculate the crucial threshold interval between urban biodiversity service and recreation service for urban forest patch area. The findings indicated that the ideal urban forest patch scale for achieving the synergy of the two types of services was an area between 0.5 and 1 hectare. The outcomes can serve as a scientific foundation for urban forest planning and management in the future, assist in realizing the synergistic growth of the two services, as well as support the improvement of ecosystem services and the ecological welfare of people.

    Abstract Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spread widely in the world, causing a huge threat to the living environment of people.Objective: Under CT imaging, the structure features of COVID-19 lesions are complicated and varied greatly in different cases. To accurately locate COVID-19 lesions and assist doctors to make the best diagnosis and treatment plan, a deep-supervised ensemble learning network is presented for COVID-19 lesion segmentation in CT images.Methods: Since a large number of COVID-19 CT images and the corresponding lesion annotations are difficult to obtain, a transfer learning strategy is employed to make up for the shortcoming and alleviate the overfitting problem. Based on the reality that traditional single deep learning framework is difficult to extract complicated and varied COVID-19 lesion features effectively that may cause some lesions to be undetected. To overcome the problem, a deep-supervised ensemble learning network is presented to combine with local and global features for COVID-19 lesion segmentation.Results: The performance of the proposed method was validated in experiments with a publicly available dataset. Compared with manual annotations, the proposed method acquired a high intersection over union (IoU) of 0.7279 and a low Hausdorff distance (H) of 92.4604.Conclusion: A deep-supervised ensemble learning network was presented for coronavirus pneumonia lesion segmentation in CT images. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by visual inspection and quantitative evaluation. Experimental results indicated that the proposed method has a good performance in COVID-19 lesion segmentation.
