Abstract Land finance, or tudi caizheng, is a phenomenon unique and critical to China’s urban development. Its genesis, however, has not been seriously addressed. This research questions the widely accepted conventional theory that the 1994 tax-sharing reform resulted in land finance. This theory assumes that the reform created a deficiency in local fiscal income; As an expediency, land finance was formulated when local governments sold land usufructs to increase revenue. This research demonstrates that local governments after the reform neither experienced a plunge in revenue nor owned the capacity to create the institutional framework that enables them to increase land revenue. Instead, the combination of rigorous fiscal management, monopoly of land supply, strict land use control, and market mechanism of conveyance, this paper argues, is the primary cause of land finance, and only national institution building can actualise these conditions. The efforts regarding institution building were driven by the party state’s idea of ‘land as resources and asset.’ Otherwise, localities would have to compete to loosen their regulation to attract investments and, therefore, capture much less land value increase, and land finance would be impossible.

Abstract Seventeen undescribed guaianolide sesquiterpene lactones, millefoliumines A-Q, and seven known analogues were isolated from the whole plant of Achillea millefolium L. growing in Xinjiang, China. Their structures were elucidated based on the HRESIMS and NMR data analyses. The absolute configurations of millefoliumines A-Q were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, ECD data analysis along with quantum-chemical ECD calculations. The anti-inflammatory effects of these compounds on the LPS-induced RAW264.7 cell model were evaluated. As a result, millefoliumine G exhibited potential inhibitory effects on the release of NO, the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-6. Above results indicated a potential of the guaianolides from A. millefolium in the anti-inflammatory drug development.

Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease with high mortality. A 73-year-old woman presented to the hospital with fever after being bitten by ticks and was diagnosed with SFTS. Three days after treatment with high-flow oxygen and supportive therapy, her condition deteriorated to septic shock and multiple organ failure. Ruxolitinib, a JAK1/2 inhibitor, was used for the treatment of cytokine release syndrome, and the patient finally recovered. Ruxolitinib and other host-based immunomodulatory drugs may be potential treatments for fatal SFTS.

Abstract Six undescribed monoterpenoids, together with twelve known compounds were isolated and identified from Hyssopus cuspidatus Boriss. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations were established by ECD calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography. The isolated compounds were tested for their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antitumor activities. Most of the compounds showed potent anti-inflammatory activities. Among them, 3β-hydroxy-7,8-dihydro-β-ionone (8), oleanolic acid (17) and acetylpleamolic acid (18) showed strong anti-inflammatory activity against IL-6 and TNF-α in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Several compounds showed moderate inhibitory activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Escherichia coli. And (4S)-p-menth-l-ene-7,8-diol 8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (16) showed antitumor activities against MCF-8 and HT-29 cell lines with IC₅₀ values of 93.39 ± 3.69 and 71.89 ± 2.94 μM, respectively. Oleanolic acid (17) showed moderate antitumor activity against HT-29 cell lines with an IC₅₀ value of 52.62 ± 1.63 μM. In this study, the discovery of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antitumor components from H. cuspidatus could benefit further development and utilization of this plant.

Abstract Nanomaterials integrating a variety of excellent properties (such as controllable/suitable size, surface modifier, and multifunctionality) have attracted increasing attention in the biomedical field and have been considered a new generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs). In recent years, stimuli-responsive nanomaterials with specifically responsive ability have been synthesized as MRI CAs, which can significantly improve the diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy depending on their outstanding performance. Furthermore, the inherent tumor microenvironment (TME) of malignant tumor is considered to possess several unique features, such as low extracellular pH, redox condition, hypoxia, and high interstitial pressure, that are significantly different from healthy tissues. Hence, constructing nanomaterials for TME-responsive MRI as an emerging strategy is expected to overcome the current obstacles to precise diagnosis. This review focuses on recent advances of nanomaterials in their application of TME-responsive MRI that trigger the diagnostic function in response to various endogenous stimulations, including pH, redox, enzyme, and hypoxia. Moreover, the future challenges and trends in the development of nanomaterials serving as TME-responsive MRI CAs are discussed.

Abstract Athlete balance control ability plays an important role in different types of sports. Accurate and efficient evaluations of the balance control abilities can significantly improve the athlete management performance. With the rapid development of the athlete training field, intelligent and automatic evaluations have been highly demanded in the past years. This study proposes a deep learning-based athlete balance control ability evaluation method through processing the time-series movement pressure measurement data. An end-to-end model structure is proposed, which directly analyzes the raw data and provides the evaluation results, which largely facilitates practical utilization. A multi-scale feature extraction scheme is employed, by exploring the learned features in different scales. A residual connected neural network architecture is further proposed. By using the short-cut connection, the deep neural network model can be more efficiently trained. Experiments on the real athlete balance control ability tests are carried out for validations. Through comparisons with different related methods, the results show the proposed deep multi-scale residual connected neural network model is well suited for the athlete balance control ability evaluation problem, and promising for actual applications in the real scenarios.

Abstract ERA5 is the latest fifth-generation reanalysis global atmosphere dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, replacing ERA-Interim as the next generation of representative satellite-observational data on the global scale. ERA5 data have been evaluated and applied in different regions, but the performances are inconsistent. Meanwhile, there are few precise evaluations of ERA5 precipitation data over long time series have been performed in Chinese mainland. This study evaluates the temporal-spatial performance of ERA5 precipitation data from 1979 to 2018 based on gridded-ground meteorological station observational data across China. The results showed that ERA5 data could capture the annual and seasonal patterns of observed precipitation in China well, with correlation coefficient values ranging from 0.796 to 0.945, but ERA5 slightly overestimated precipitation in the summer. Nonetheless, the results also showed that the accuracy of the precipitation products was strongly correlated with topographic distribution and climatic divisions. The performance of ERA5 shows spatial inherently across China that the highest correlation coefficient values locate in eastern, Northwestern and North China and the lowest biases locate in Southeast China. This study provides a reliable data assessment of the ERA5 data and precipitation trend analyses in China. The results provide accuracy references for the further use of precipitation satellite data for hydrological calculations and climate numerical simulations.

Abstract Background: Timely and accurate identification of pathogens is crucial for appropriate treatment and prognosis of infectious diseases. As an increasingly popular pathogen detection method, the performance of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in detecting pathogens in febrile patients with suspected infection requires further exploration.
Methods: This study included 368 febrile patients with suspected infections who were admitted to the Infectious Disease Department of Qilu Hospital, Shandong University between January 5, 2021 and April 14, 2023. Both mNGS testing and conventional culture were performed in all patients. Clinical data of enrolled patients were collected, and the diagnostic performances of mNGS and culture were compared.
Results: Of the 368 enrolled patients, 231 were finally diagnosed with infection and 137 were with diseases other than infection. The sensitivity (58.01% vs. 21.65%, p < 0.001) and negative predictive value (54.67% vs. 42.9%) of mNGS were superior to those of culture. In contrast, the culture exhibited higher specificity (99.27% vs. 85.40%, p < 0.001) and positive predictive value (98.84% vs. 87.01%) than mNGS. Among infected patients with positive mNGS results, 64 received adjusted antibiotic therapy including treatment transitions, antibiotic downgrading, and combination therapy. Among them, 9 had additional antifungal drugs and 21 patients had a treatment turning point based on the mNGS results and these patients recovered and discharged due to timely antibiotic adjustment. Both positive rates of puncture fluid mNGS and tissue mNGS were higher than those of culture in the patients who had prior antibiotic use, and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.000).
Conclusion: mNGS is more sensitive and accurate than traditional culture, making it ideal for identifying pathogens and screening infectious diseases, especially for those with uncultivated or difficult-to-cultivate species. Early diagnosis allows for prompt treatment with targeted antibiotics, and mNGS is recommended when samples are limited.
