Abstract Acute liver failure (ALF) is a severe liver disease with a high mortality rate without effective therapeutic drugs. Ferroptosis is a form of programmed cell death that plays an important role in ALF. In this study, we aimed to identify ferroptosis-related genes in ALF, thereby predicting promising compounds to treat ALF. First, mRNA microarray data were utilized to identify the ferroptosis-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Hub genes were screened in the protein-protein interaction network and validated. Subsequently, potential drugs to treat ALF were predicted. One of the predicted drugs was tested in an ALF model of mice. Ferroptosis examination and molecular docking were analyzed to explore the mechanism. A total of 37 DEGs were identified, ten hub genes were extracted, and their expression in ALF was validated. The predicted drug niclosamide mitigated lipopolysaccharide/D-galactosamine-induced hepatotoxicity, and decreased mortality of mice in the ALF model. Mechanically, niclosamide may combine with signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 to inhibit ALF progression by suppressing ferroptosis. This study may help advance our understanding of the role of ferroptosis in ALF, and niclosamide may be promising for therapeutic efficacy in patients with ALF.

Abstract Background: Clear cell type hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an uncommon neoplasm with an ambivalent prognosis compared to common type HCC.
Methods: First, patients with clear cell or common type HCC were enrolled from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, and their demographic and clinical characteristics were identified. Next, overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and subgroup analysis of the two types of HCC were performed. Next, we utilized a competing risk model to focus on cancer-caused death. Finally, propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to reduce the confounding factors based on the histopathological type, and sensitivity analysis was conducted.
Results: A total of 205 cases of clear cell type HCC and 29,954 cases of common type HCC were enrolled in our study. Patients with clear cell type HCC were older and predominantly female than those with common type HCC. OS and DSS were not significantly different between the two groups, and histopathological type was not a prognostic factor of HCC, as verified by the competing risk model. Patient characteristics adjusted by PSM and sensitivity analysis confirmed this conclusion. In subgroup analysis, patients with clear cell type HCC at grade III ~ IV and with lymph nodes metastasis had a better prognosis compared to common type HCC.
Conclusions: This study revealed that the prognosis of clear cell type HCC is similar to common type HCC. Tumor differentiation grade and status of lymph node metastasis affect the prognosis of HCC.

Abstract Recently, as a potential source of stationery products, bamboo has been continuously excavated for its commercial value in sustainable development. The research on the design of the bamboo pen holder, based on the concept of sustainable design, is not only a symbol of Chinese culture but also a reflection of perceptual factors underlying college students’ preferences. This study aims at user-centered product design by integrating Design Thinking (DT) and Kansei Engineering (KE). We proposed the KE–DT framework which allows designers to coordinate the user’s feelings as design elements. With various college student questionnaires, expert interviews, and cluster analysis, 7 Kansei words were selected to describe the sentimental value first. Using statistical analysis, the users’ emotional preference for each Kansei word was determined. Finally, the best shape of the pen holder was obtained by Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), and the stereoscopic product was displayed. A new round of questionnaire surveys was conducted with the optimized pen container and the previous group. The results indicated that curvature had a significant effect on the preference for bamboo stationery in terms of user and designer cognitive differences. Furthermore, the bamboo pen holder designed by the KE–DT framework proved widely popular.

Abstract Endometriosis, a prevalent disorder in women of reproductive age, is often associated with undesired infertility. Ovarian reserve, an essential measure of ovarian function that is crucial for maintaining fecundity, is frequently diminished in women with endometriosis. Though the causative relationship between endometriosis and reduced ovarian reserve is not fully understood due to the lack of standardized and precise measurements of ovarian reserve, there is ongoing discussion regarding the impact of interventions for endometriosis on ovarian reserve. Therefore, in this review, we investigate articles that have related keywords and which were also published in recent years. Thereafter, we provide a comprehensive summary of evidence from in vitro, in vivo, and human studies, thereby shedding light on the decreased ovarian reserve in endometriosis. This research consolidates evidence from in vitro, in vivo, and human studies on the diminished ovarian reserve associated with endometriosis, as well as enhances our understanding of whether and how endometriosis, as well as its interventions, contribute to reductions in ovarian reserve. Furthermore, we explore potential strategies to modify existing therapy options that could help prevent diminished ovarian reserve in patients with endometriosis.

Abstract With changes in lifestyle and an increase in bad health habits, cancer has become a noncommunicable and frequently occurring disease that poses a serious threat to human life. Cancer is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As a major negative life event, advanced malignancies lead to strong mood swings in most patients. Furthermore, various internal and external factors can have a huge impact on patients’ physical and mental health and put them in a stressful situation, causing a series of psychological stress responses. To explore the degree of fear of disease progression in patients with advanced cancer and the usefulness of dignity therapy. Overall, 120 patients with advanced malignant tumors admitted to Shijiazhuang No. 1 hospital between January 2019 and January 2020 were enrolled. The selected patients were divided into the test and control groups (60 people per group) using a random number table. All patients received basic treatment. Patients in the trial group also received dignity therapy. The intervention period was 4 weeks. Simplified scales were used for assessing disease progression (FoP-Q-SF) and quality of life (QLQ-C30) before and after the intervention, and the scores were compared between the groups. After the intervention, the degree of fear in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. Cognitive function, emotional function, and the scores of the overall health status of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group. Additionally, the scores of fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, and diarrhea in the experimental group were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The social support level scale scores, depression scores, hospital anxiety and depression scale scores, and patient dignity inventory scores of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Patients with advanced malignant tumors have fear, anxiety, and depression related to disease progression. Dignity therapy is ...

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical compounds of garlic essential oil (EO), and determine the antifungal efficacy of garlic EO and its major components, diallyl trisulfide and its nanoemulsions against wood-rotting fungi, Trametes hirsuta and Laetiporus sulphureus . GC-MS analysis revealed that the major constituents of garlic EO were diallyl trisulfide (39.79%), diallyl disulfide (32.91%), and diallyl sulfide (7.02%). In antifungal activity, the IC 50 value of garlic EO against T. hirsuta and L. sulphureus were 137.3 and 44.6 μg/mL, respectively. Results from the antifungal tests demonstrated that the three major constituents were shown to have good antifungal activity, in which, diallyl trisulfide was the most effective against T. hirsuta and L. sulphureus , with the IC 50 values of 56.1 and 31.6 μg/mL, respectively. The diallyl trisulfide nanoemulsions showed high antifungal efficacy against the examined wood-rotting fungi, and as the amount of diallyl trisulfide in the lipid phase increases, the antifungal efficacy of the nanoemulsions increases. These results showed that the nanoemulsions and normal emulsion of diallyl trisulfide have potential to develop into a natural wood preservative.

Abstract Introduction and objective Vaccinations programs on 3–17 years aged children in China have been launched in some cities since July 2021; and comparative evaluations are important to push the programs forward. Therefore, this study is conducted to explore the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and it predictors among Chinese parents of 3–17 years aged children; and their willingness to vaccinate their child/children. Material and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted based on the online survey; and 3484 participants were recruited in health centers of Shenzhen, China. Results The prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was 20.7% among Chinese parents of 3–17 years aged children; and 2976 participants (89.0%) were reported to be willing or very willing to accept a COVID-19 vaccine for their child/children. Perceived trust degree of a COVID-19 vaccine (OR: 0.766), and perceived effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine (OR: 0.455) were negatively associated with vaccine hesitancy. Perceived risk degree of a COVID-19 vaccine (OR: 1.485) positively predicted vaccine hesitancy. Parents with a higher educational level (OR: 0.518) and working in public institution (OR: 0.741) had a lower level of vaccine hesitancy; whereas, parents with liberal professionals had a higher level of vaccine hesitancy (OR: 1.378). Conclusions These findings indicated that Chinese parents of 3–17 years aged children in Shenzhen City had a higher level of COVID-19 vaccine acceptability, compared with adults in Western counties. The significant factors of perceived trust degree, effectiveness, and risk degree of a COVID-19 vaccine, parents’ educational level and occupation could predict COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The research results can be useful in supporting the development of effective and targeted children COVID-19 vaccination campaigns in China and worldwide.

Abstract We consider spectral methods that uncover hidden structures in directed networks. We establish and exploit connections between node reordering via (a) minimizing an objective function and (b) maximizing the likelihood of a random graph model. We focus on two existing spectral approaches that build and analyse Laplacian-style matrices via the minimization of frustration and trophic incoherence. These algorithms aim to reveal directed periodic and linear hierarchies, respectively. We show that reordering nodes using the two algorithms, or mapping them onto a specified lattice, is associated with new classes of directed random graph models. Using this random graph setting, we are able to compare the two algorithms on a given network and quantify which structure is more likely to be present. We illustrate the approach on synthetic and real networks, and discuss practical implementation issues.
