    Abstract Abstract Using the micro data of Chinese manufacturing firms, this study analyzes the impact of financial constraints on firms’ markup and their influence mechanism. The findings suggest that financial constraints significantly reduce firms’ markup. The result is still valid after a series of robustness tests, such as key indicator substitution, analysis of endogeneity problems, controlling for other policy changes, dynamic panel model estimation, and quantile regression. An analysis of the influence mechanism shows that, on the one hand, financial constraints inhibit the improvement of firms’ production efficiency and reduce its markup through the productivity channel; on the other hand, financial constraints also reduce firms’ market pricing power and exert a significant negative impact on firms’ markup through the market pricing channel. At the same time, significant heterogeneity exists in the negative impact of financial constraints among different firm types. This paper not only enriches our understanding of the relationship between financial constraints and firms’ markup, but also provides a new perspective for a more comprehensive grasp of the micro economic effects of financial constraints.

    Abstract Beach waste is an important pollutant in the Bohai Sea and coastal cities around the Bohai Sea and has raised many social and environmental concerns in China. The semi-closed characteristics of the Bohai Sea, the well-developed tourism, the special industrial structure and residents’ living habits endow the beach waste around Bohai sea with a unique character that should be explored. This study investigated changes in the sources and composition of beach waste in coastal cities around the Bohai Sea of China during the tourist peak and off-peak seasons. Beach waste from twenty beaches in thirteen coastal cities around the Bohai Sea was sampled and analyzed in March and August 2021, respectively. The results showed that beach waste around the Bohai Sea was characterized by large quantities and small weights and was greatly affected by human coastal activities. The sources and composition of beach waste from different coasts and different seasons varied, whereas the overall trend was consistent. In terms of composition, beach waste in both the tourist peak season and off-peak season was mainly composed of plastics, fabrics and paper, which accounted for more than 70% of the total in weight. Meanwhile, the proportion of plastics in the total quantity of beach waste was greatest (maximum of up to 71%) and exhibited seasonal fluctuations, trending higher in the tourist peak season than in the off-peak season. In contrast, trends in the proportion of paper and fabrics in the total quantity and total weight of beach waste were relatively stable in different seasons. In terms of sources, beach waste mainly derived from human coastal activities, the proportion of which in the total quantity of beach waste in the tourist peak season reached 70.55% and was 11% higher than that in the tourist off-peak season.     Abstract A U-Net-based network has achieved competitive performance in retinal vessel segmentation. Previous work has focused on using multilevel high-level features to improve segmentation accuracy but has ignored the importance of shallow-level features. In addition, multiple upsampling and convolution operations may destroy the semantic feature information contained in the decoder layer. To address these problems, we propose a scale and feature aggregate network (SFA-Net), which can make full use of multiscale high-level feature information and shallow features. In this paper, a residual atrous spatial feature aggregate block (RASF) is embedded at the end of the encoder to learn multiscale information. Furthermore, an attentional feature module (AFF) is proposed to enhance the effective fusion between shallow and high-level features. In addition, we designed the multi-path feature fusion (MPF) block to fuse high-level features of different decoder layers, which aims to learn the relationship between the high-level features of different paths and alleviate the information loss. We apply the network to the three benchmark datasets (DRIVE, STARE, and CHASE_DB1) and compare them with the other current state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed SFA-Net performs effectively, indicating that the network is suitable for processing some complex medical images.

    Abstract Under the influence of the urban heat island effect, the thermal environments of urban built-up areas are poor, leading to the loss of urban vitality and the extreme deterioration of thermal comfort. In this paper, the outdoor thermal environment in Wuhan’s main urban area is studied via the use of field measurements. From June to August in the years 2015 to 2017, 20 measurement points were selected for monitoring from 08:00 to 19:00 h, which were located in spaces such as residential areas, parklands, commercial streets, and college/university campuses. The measurements for the same types of land and different types of land use are analyzed. A comprehensive thermal environment index is used to quantitatively evaluate the overall situations of thermal environments. The results showed that the cooling effect of vegetation shading was stronger than the effect of water evaporation and the maximum temperature difference between the two cooling methods reached 6.1 °C. The cooling effect of the canopy shading of tall trees was stronger than the effect of grassland transpiration and the maximum temperature difference was 2.8 °C. The streets with higher aspect ratios might improve the ventilation, but the wind speeds remained low, which did not provide a strong cooling effect. This study helps urban planners understand the thermal environment of Wuhan or similar cities with hot summer and diversified urban areas, and puts forward suggestions to reduce the heat island effect from the aspect of building layout, green coverage, shading mode, and street aspect ratio, so as to establish sustainable cities that are climate adaptable and environmentally friendly.

    Abstract To enhance the conductivity of a silver nanowire (Ag NW) network, a facile solvent welding method was developed. Soaking a Ag NW network in ethylene glycol (EG) or alcohol for less than 15 min decreased the resistance about 70%. Further combined solvent processing via a plasmonic welding approach decreased the resistance about 85%. This was achieved by simply exposing the EG-soaked Ag NW network to a low-power blue light (60 mW/cm 2 ). Research results suggest that poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) dissolution by solvent brings nanowires into closer contact, and this reduced gap distance between nanowires enhances the plasmonic welding effect, hence further decreasing resistance. Aside from this dual combination of methods, a triple combination with Joule heating welding induced by applying a current to the Ag NW network decreased the resistance about 96%. Although conductivity was significantly enhanced, our results showed that the melting at Ag NW junctions was relatively negligible, which indicates that the enhancement in conductivity could be attributed to the removal of PVP layers. Moreover, the approaches were quite gentle so any potential damage to Ag NWs or polymer substrates by overheating (e.g., excessive Joule heating) was avoided entirely, making the approaches suitable for application in devices using heat-sensitive materials.

    Abstract Cultural sustainability has become a fourth pillar in sustainable development studies. Different from the research approach to embedding culture into conventional sustainable discourse, this article argues that the sustainability and resilience issues within the arts and cultural sector should be paid more attention to. Putting the arts and cultural sector in urban settings, sustainable cultural development entails dynamic policy framing and changing policy justifications in response to an evolving socioeconomic and political environment. Taking the policy framing of the arts as an analytical lens, this paper aims to investigate this dynamic change and key driving factors through an in-depth case study of Boston’s urban cultural development. This article finds that different definitions of the arts are associated with different arts-based urban development strategies across four stages of cultural development in Boston spanning a period of over 75 years. The working definition moved from art to the arts, then to the creative arts industry, and eventually to cultural assets and creative capital. The policy framing of the arts keeps evolving and layering in pursuit of more legitimacy and resources regarding groups of stakeholders, field industry components, types of industrial structure, and multiple policy goals. This dynamic policy framing has been driven by arts advocacy groups, policy learning process, urban leadership change, and cultural institutional change, allowing Boston to draw on a growing and diversifying set of cultural resources in pursuit of sustainable cultural development.

    Abstract Summary: Two-dimensional van der Waals materials offer various possibilities for synaptic devices, matching the requirements of intelligent and energy-efficient computation. However, very few studies on robust flexible synaptic transistors have been reported, which hold great potential for soft robotics and wearable applications. Here a floating gate synaptic device based on ambipolar black phosphorus (BP) on a flexible substrate has been demonstrated with two working modes. The three-terminal mode, where the carriers are injected into the floating gate, shows a nonvolatile memory effect, whereas the two-terminal mode shows a quasi-nonvolatile memory effect. Remarkably, the synaptic device working on the three-terminal mode shows an excellent performance in the energy-efficient computation of sub-fJ/spike with a fast gate voltage response down to ∼10 ns. Furthermore, the flexible synaptic device exhibits good endurance under 5,000 bending cycles with a strain of ∼0.63%, suggesting great potential in flexible neuromorphic applications with low energy consumption.

    Abstract The remarkable prevalence of pyrazole scaffolds in a versatile array of bioactive molecules ranging from apixaban, an anticoagulant used to treat and prevent blood clots and stroke, to bixafen, a pyrazole-carboxamide fungicide used to control diseases of rapeseed and cereal plants, has encouraged both medicinal and organic chemists to explore new methods in developing pyrazole-containing compounds for different applications. Although numerous synthetic strategies have been developed in the last 10 years, there has not been a comprehensive overview of synthesis and the implication of recent advances for treating neurodegenerative disease. This review first presents the advances in pyrazole scaffold synthesis and their functionalization that have been published during the last decade (2011–2020). We then narrow the focus to the application of these strategies in the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD).

    Abstract Rice grain yield is a complex trait determined by three components: panicle number, grain number per panicle (GNPP) and grain weight. GNPP is the major contributor to grain yield and is crucial for its improvement. GNPP is determined by a series of physiological and biochemical steps, including inflorescence development, formation of rachis branches such as primary rachis branches and secondary rachis branches, and spikelet specialisation (lateral and terminal spikelets). The molecular genetic basis of GNPP determination is complex, and it is regulated by numerous interlinked genes. In this review, panicle development and the determination of GNPP is described briefly, and GNPP-related genes that influence its determination are categorised according to their regulatory mechanisms. We introduce genes related to rachis branch development and their regulation of GNPP, genes related to phase transition (from rachis branch meristem to spikelet meristem) and their regulation of GNPP, and genes related to spikelet specialisation and their regulation of GNPP. In addition, we describe other GNPP-related genes and their regulation of GNPP. Research on GNPP determination suggests that it is possible to cultivate rice varieties with higher grain yield by modifying GNPP-related genes.
