    Abstract Vitality can effectively test the quality of regional space, put forward the concept of urban human settlement vitality, and explore the development status of urban human settlement vitality space, which is of great significance in promoting the high-quality development of urban human settlements. By constructing an evaluation index system of urban human settlement vitality and comprehensively using projection pursuit models, spatial correlation analysis, and spatial measurement models, the spatial pattern and influencing factors of the vitality of urban human settlements in the four districts of Dalian were studied. The results are as follows: (1) The spatial differentiation characteristics of the vitality of urban human settlements in Dalian are remarkable. Overall, it gradually decreased from the city center to the administrative boundary. (2) The spatial dependence of the vitality of urban human settlements among regions is relatively strong, with a more obvious “Matthew effect”. Among them, urban human settlement vitality hot spots were mainly distributed in the southeast of Dalian, showing a concentrated distribution trend, while the cold spots were distributed in the northern fringe area of Dalian, with spatial homogeneity characteristics. (3) Topography, ecological environment, social economy, commercial development, spatial structure, spatial form, regional scale, etc. have different impacts on the vitality of urban human settlements.

    Abstract It is widely recognized that urban resilience is one of the core goals of urban development. As an important part of a city, the resilience level of urban human settlements directly affects the development trend of urban resilience. However, at present, research results on the resilience of urban human settlements are very rare, are mainly concentrated in the central region of China, and rarely take into account the economically backward northeastern region. Therefore, in order to better improve the anti-risk ability of the urban human settlement environment system in three provinces of Northeast China, fully implement the strategic goal of “Comprehensive Revitalization of Northeast China”, and achieve high-quality urban development, this paper focuses on 34 prefecture-level cities in three provinces of Northeast China and proposes an urban human settlement resilience evaluation system with 36 indicators in five dimensions, namely, the natural system, human system, housing system, supporting system, and social system. Using the entropy weight method, the Dagum Gini coefficient, and a geographical probe model, the changes in the resilience level of each city from 2005 to 2020 were measured, and the urban living environment was assessed in terms of the adaptability and resilience of the development level in each subsystem based on the temporal and spatial evolution law and its influencing factors. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) The development level of urban human settlement resilience in the three provinces in Northeast China showed an N-shaped development trend from 2005 to 2020, but the regional differences were significant, and the overall spatial pattern was “high in the south and low in the north”. (2) In terms of the overall difference, the overall difference in urban human settlement resilience in the three northeastern provinces of China was small: the inter-regional difference was the main source of the difference, and the intra-regional difference was the secondary source.     Abstract Assembling components of man-made objects to create new structures or complete 3D shapes is a popular approach in 3D modeling techniques. Recently, leveraging deep neural networks for assembly-based 3D modeling has been widely studied. However, exploring new component combinations even across different categories is still challenging for most of the deep-learning-based 3D modeling methods. In this paper, we propose a novel generative autoencoder that tackles the component combinations for 3D modeling of man-made objects. We use the segmented input objects to create component volumes that have redundant components and random configurations. By using the input objects and the associated component volumes to train the autoencoder, we can obtain an object volume consisting of components with proper quality and structure as the network output. Such a generative autoencoder can be applied to either multiple object categories for structure hybrid or a single object category for shape completion. We conduct a series of evaluations and experimental results to demonstrate the usability and practicability of our method.

    Abstract Under the guidance of people-oriented development concepts, improving residents’ life satisfaction has gradually become the goal of urban governance. Based on Chinese household tracking survey data and national socio-economic statistics, this study used the entropy method, multi-layer linear regression model and geographically weighted regression model and discusses the spatial heterogeneity of the impact of objective environmental characteristics and subjective perceived characteristics of urban residential environments on residents’ life satisfaction. It is of great importance to study the mechanisms through which subjective and objective characteristics of urban human settlements influence living satisfaction among residents. It is also important to discuss how to improve living satisfaction levels through the urban human settlements and to realize high-quality urban development. The research results show that in 2018, the overall level of life satisfaction among Chinese urban residents was relatively high. However, it is still necessary to continue to optimize the urban human settlements to improve residents’ life satisfaction. The objective characteristics of the urban human settlements, such as natural environmental comfort and environmental health, have a significant positive impact on residents’ life satisfaction. Residents’ subjective perceptions of government integrity, environmental protection, wealth gap, social security, medical conditions and medical level, as well as residents’ individual gender, age and health status also have a significant impact on residents’ life satisfaction. The direction and intensity of effects of different elements of the urban human settlements and residents’ personal attributes on urban residents’ life satisfaction have different characteristics in different regions.

    Abstract As the most important ecological barrier in eastern China, the three northeast provinces have extraordinary ecological significance. Their geographical location and climatic conditions make the distribution pattern of vegetation unique. Among them, climate change and human activities are the main factors affecting the richness and complexity of vegetation, climate change dominates the overall pattern of vegetation distribution, and regional human intervention locally changes the growth state of vegetation. Therefore, based on NDVI data of vegetation, meteorological data and socio-economic data, statistical methods such as Sen’s slope estimator, Mann-Kendall trend test, center of gravity transfer model, Hurst index and coefficient of variation were adopted to analyze the spatio-temporal changes and future trends in vegetation coverage; The use of Geographic detector to understand the relationship between NDVI to climate change and human activities. The results suggested that: 1) The three northeast provinces of China experienced an overall increasing NDVI at a rate of 0.016%/year from 2001 to 2020. The NDVI shows intensive heterogeneity in space, exhibiting a landscape of high in the East, low in the west, high in the north and low in the south; 2) The results of geographic detectors show that the temporal and spatial distribution pattern of vegetation NDVI is mainly determined by ≥ 10°C accumulated temperature, ≥ 0°C accumulated temperature, annual average temperature and land use type. The interaction between factors presents a bi-variable enhancement and nonlinear enhancement, and human activity factors enhance the contribution of climate factors. 3) Future changes in NDVI indicated that the vegetation coverage showed a trend of “overall improvement and regional degradation” from 2001 to 2020, and showed reverse persistence.     Abstract Urban pseudo and reality human settlements (PHSs and RHSs) are important components of the human–land relationship regional system. To explore the coupling and coordination relationship and principle among them is an important approach to high-quality coordinated urban development. Based on the three-dimensional development of human settlements, the theoretical system of a “three states” dynamic frame diagram is constructed. The spatio-temporal heterogeneity and driving principle of coupling coordination among PHSs and RHSs in 34 prefecture-level cities in northeast China from 2011 to 2019 were explained by using the coupling coordination degree, spatial trend surface analysis and geographic detector techniques, and the evolution principle of spatio-temporal coordination was revealed. The results show that: (1) in the temporal dimension, the coupling coordination degree among PHSs and RHSs in the three provinces shows a smooth growth from “slight disadjustment” to “near disadjustment”; (2) With Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun and Harbin as the center, the coordination degree shows a circular pattern decreasing from the transition area to peripheral area. In the direction of south and north, the spatial evolution trend shows a gradual change from a “—” shape to “U” shape. There is spatio-temporal variation of the trend surface from an inverted “U” shape to “—” shape in the east–west direction; (3) The socioeconomic situation is an important driving factor, and the tool system is a new driving system for the coupling and coordinated development of urban PHSs and RHSs.

    Abstract Nighttime light images are valuable indicators of regional economic development, and nighttime light data are now widely used in town monitoring and evaluation studies. Using the nighttime light data acquired through Luojia1-01 and the geographic information system spatial analysis method, this study analyzed the spatial vitality pattern of 402 characteristic towns in six geographic divisions of China. The average DN (Digital Number) value of Guzhen, having the highest vitality level, was 0.05665221, whereas that of Xin’an, having the lowest vitality level, was 0.00000186. A total of 89.5% of towns have a low level of vitality. The regional differences were significant; high vitality towns are concentrated in economically developed coastal areas, mainly in two large regions of east China and south central. The average lighting densities of the towns in east China and south central were 0.004838 and 0.003190, respectively. The lighting density of the towns in west central was low, and the vitality intensity was generally low. A spatially significant positive correlation of small-town vitality was observed, and “high–high” agglomeration was primarily distributed in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Fujian coastal areas in east and south China. The towns with high vitality intensity had similarities in their geographical location, convenient transportation conditions, and profound historical heritage or cultural accumulation along with many industrial enterprises. This research empirically demonstrates the feasibility of using the 130-m-high resolution of the nighttime lighting data of Luojia1-01 to evaluate the vitality at the town scale, and the vitality evaluation focuses on the spatial attributes of the town, which is meaningful to guide the development of the town in each region given the vast area of China and the large differences in the development of different regions.

    Abstract In this study, an urban fringe green space classification system was established to explore the spatiotemporal variation of green space landscape and ecosystem service value (ESV) based on multi-source land-use data of Ganjingzi district from 2000 to 2018. (1) Results show that the total green space area declined from 359.57 to 213.46 km2 over the study period. Green space large plaque index (LPI) and class area both gradually declined, whereas the number of plaques (NP) and plaque density (PD) gradually increased, indicating green space landscape fragmentation. (2) Additionally, the value of green space ecosystem services reduced from 397.42 to 124.93 million yuan. The dynamic degree of ESV change in green space increased or decreased moderately, always being < 0 and showing a decreasing trend of ESV. From a spatial variation perspective, dynamic degrees of ESV variation in the western and northern regions with relatively intensive green space were higher than those in the east. Regarding ESV of various green space types, forest land had the highest functional values of ecological regulation and support, whereas arable land provided the highest functional values of production supply. (3) The ecological service function value of green space system is negatively correlated with PD, NP, edge density, landscape shape index, and Shannon's diversity index, and positively correlated with aggregation index, contagion metrics, and LPI. The correlation coefficient between the climate regulation function of forest and the change of number of plaques is -0.874. The correlation coefficient of the recreation and culture of the wetland to the plaque density change is no less than -0.214.

    Abstract Abstract Cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) is a powerful tool for exploring the molecular structure of large organisms. However, technical challenges still limit cryoET applications on large samples. In particular, localization and cutting out objects of interest from a large tissue sample are still difficult steps. In this study, we report a sample thinning strategy and workflow for tissue samples based on cryo-focused ion beam (cryoFIB) milling. This workflow provides a full solution for isolating objects of interest by starting from a millimeter-sized tissue sample and ending with hundred-nanometer-thin lamellae. The workflow involves sample fixation, pre-sectioning, a two-step milling strategy, and localization of the object of interest using cellular secondary electron imaging (CSEI). The milling strategy consists of two steps, a coarse milling step to improve the milling efficiency, followed by a fine milling step. The two-step milling creates a furrow–ridge structure with an additional conductive Pt layer to reduce the beam-induced charging issue. CSEI is highlighted in the workflow, which provides on-the-fly localization during cryoFIB milling. Tests of the complete workflow were conducted to demonstrate the high efficiency and high feasibility of the proposed method.
