    Abstract Background: Jianpi Yangxue Qufeng Compound (JPYXQFC) is a Chinese medicine widely used in the clinical treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and has a significantly therapeutic effect. However, the mechanism of JPYXQFC in AD has been not understood clearly. Objective: This study aimed to explore the effect of JPYXQFC on AD model cells and rats by regulating TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway. Methods: The rats (n > 5) were given JPYXQFC decoction orally twice a day for three days, and their abdominal aortic blood was collected. HaCaT cell proliferation rate was tested by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays. We induced AD rat model through 2, 4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB). AD rats were given oral JPYXQFC decoction and cetirizine (positive control). HaCaT cells were pretreated with JPYXQFC drug serum or cetirizine for 0.5 h and then stimulated with TNF-α/IFN-γ for 1 h. The mRNA levels of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB, IL-4, IL-13, MCP1, TNF-α and TSLP were detected by quantitative real-time PCR (Q-RT-PCR), and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway protein expression was tested by Western blot. The total serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), thymus and activation regulated chemokine/chemokine (C–C motif) ligand 17 (TARC/CCL17) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The epidermal thickness was detected by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The dermatitis area and score were measured by a ruler and a four-point scoring method, respectively. Results: JPYXQFC significantly inhibited mRNA and protein expression of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway and Histone H3 in TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT cells and DNFB-induced rats, decreased the mRNA of IL-4, IL-13, MCP1, CCL22, TSLP and the level of AD-related genes IgE and TAEC/CCL17 of TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT cells. Meanwhile, JPYXQFC significantly reduced the dermatitis area and dermatitis score in DNFB-induced rats, inhibited the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α, and upregulated FLG, as well as inhibited the levels of IgE and TARC/CCL17 in the serum of AD rats. ...

    Abstract Backgrounds Training in the basic interview skills of clinical history-taking has always been a significant component of medical education. Purpose This study was designed to identify the factors influence medical students’ history-taking skills learning and develop a way to improve these skills. Methods We firstly analysed the academic performance of medical students at Jinan University School of Medicine in different disciplines of the Clinical Medicine Level Test (CMLT), to ensure the students have obtained comprehensive medical education prior to beginning their clinical internships. Next, we conducted a survey among the CMLT participants to seek the underlying causes and corresponding measures to improve history-taking in the future. Before these medical students entered their fifth-year clinical practice, we finally provide them with pre-internship training, including the history-taking workshops with standard patients (SP). Results The analysis of the clinical skill sections of the CMLT revealed that the students performed significantly better on clinical operations from multiple disciplines than on medical history-taking. Principal component analysis of the survey questionnaire indicated that the capability of history-taking, course assessments, and awareness of the value of medical history-taking emerged as the key factors forming a cohesive clue for sustaining history-taking implementation. The intervention workshops of employing SP had a positive impact, as evidenced by the students’ feedback and suggestions for improving their ability of history-taking. Conclusions This study suggests that strengthening of medical history-taking training is indispensable for training qualified medical students. Workshops with SP is a successful teaching strategy for practicing history-taking, allowing students to spot minute errors and training communication skills.

    Abstract Background: Psoriasis has been linked to dyslipidemia. However, the magnitude of the association between psoriasis and serum apolipoproteins A1 and B remains unclear. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for eligible studies published before August 10, 2023. Data were pooled using Stata software. We adopted a random-effects model for the meta-analysis. Additionally, we conducted subgroup analyses of the studies according to the psoriasis type and matched body mass index (BMI). Results: Seventeen studies involving 2467 participants were included. Psoriasis was associated with decreased serum apolipoprotein A1 (weighted mean difference [WMD] = −9.05, P < 0.001) and increased serum apolipoprotein B (WMD = 11.68, P < 0.001). In subgroup analysis after matching BMI, the findings showing an association of psoriasis with serum apolipoprotein A1 (WMD = −14.07, P < 0.001) and serum apolipoprotein B (WMD = 13.07, P < 0.001) were consistent with the overall results. The subgroup analysis for the presence or absence of psoriatic arthritis showed that serum apolipoprotein A1 was significantly decreased in psoriasis with (WMD = −11.29, P < 0.001) and without arthritis (WMD = −8.69, P = 0.039); whereas serum apolipoprotein B was significantly increased in psoriasis with (WMD = 13.57, P < 0.001) and without arthritis (WMD = 9.21, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study revealed that psoriasis is associated with decreased serum apolipoprotein A1 and increased serum apolipoprotein B levels compared with healthy controls.

    Abstract PurposeThis study endeavors to investigate ways to optimize the role of teachers in undergraduate dental basic research education (UDBRE) with the aim of nurturing the research potential of undergraduate students.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study among medical undergraduates enrolled at the School of Stomatology, Guangzhou Medical University. Descriptive statistics were employed to comprehensively analyze UDBRE’s fundamental aspects. Kendall rank correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between the quality of feedback provided by tutors to undergraduates and the students’ scientific research abilities. Additionally, multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to uncover the factors influencing the effectiveness of UDBRE.ResultsA total of 168 medical students were surveyed with a valid response rate of 93.85%. The effectiveness of UDBRE was demonstrated by undergraduates’ self-rated research abilities, active participation in scientific research projects, and a certain amount of academic outputs. Significant and positive correlations (b> 0.5, p < 0.001) were identified between the tutor-undergraduate feedback quality and students’ self-rated scores for scientific research abilities. These abilities included developing scientific questions, designing research projects, retrieving and reading literature, academic writing, experiment operation, and analyzing and evaluating experimental results. Positive effects on students’ academic performance (p < 0.05) were observed when higher-quality feedback, an authoritative tutoring style and tutors with middle-career experience were present.ConclusionThis study underscores the pivotal role of UDBRE in fostering the scientific research aptitude of medical undergraduates. It emphasizes the constructive influence of tutor-undergraduate feedback, authoritative teaching styles, providing valuable insights for establishing an effective mentorship framework.

    Abstract Background As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty development program has partially shifted to online formats over the past two years, with a specific focus on professional training related to blended learning. The effectiveness of this training is closely tied to the perceptions and acceptability of blended learning among the trainees. This study aims to evaluate the perspectives of educators on blended learning, thereby assessing the efficacy of faculty training programs. Methods Anatomical teachers were chosen as a representative sample due to their significant presence among medical science educators. Chinese anatomists were invited to participate in a survey that gauges their attitudes and readiness for blended learning. Results A total of 297 responses were collected, covering all provinces in mainland China. The findings from the survey demonstrate that Chinese anatomists hold learning flexibility in the highest regard among the various facets of blended learning. Meanwhile, the presence of a connected learning community emerged as a pivotal factor influencing anatomists’ perceptions, explaining 14.77% of the total variance. Further analysis showed noteworthy disparities in anatomists’ attitudes toward blending learning based on their job titles, mentorship guidance, and support from in-service institutions. Notably, lecturers showed a more pronounced engagement in the connected learning community than teachers with different job titles. Additionally, anatomists who received stronger institutional support showed higher proficiencies in learning management. Conclusion This survey revealed that Chinese anatomists attribute considerable value to aspects such as learning flexibility, a connected learning community, and effective learning management within the domain of online/blended learning. Positive attitudes toward blended learning are likely to be nurtured by mentorship and institutional support, subsequently correlating with improved training outcomes.     Abstract After long-term oxidation and energy storage, broken coal body borehole walls and drainage shaft walls may cause spontaneous combustion during gas extraction. The high-temperature thermal shock caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal incurs thermal damage on adjacent coal, which, in turn, causes changes in the mechanical properties of the coal. However, only a few studies have been conducted in this context, which has limited our understanding of the thermal damage characteristics of coal bodies in such situations. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the correlation between the crack evolution law and the mechanical properties of coal bodies at different temperatures (50-300°C) using heat-force loading considering Ping Mei No. 10 coal mine as the research object. The results suggest that the coal body experiences a large amount of visible damage, and becomes increasingly complex. At 50-300°C, some indexes (such as longitudinal wave velocity, Poisson's ratio, compressive strength, elastic modulus, impact energy index, and pre-peak strain) are positively correlated with temperature. In addition, the dynamic failure time and temperature show a negative correlation, and the overall change slope is small. The relationship between each index and temperature at 200-300°C is opposite to that at 50-200°C, and the overall change slope is larger. Moreover, when the oxidation temperature exceeds 200°C, the destruction of the coal body changes from elastic brittleness to ductility-plasticity. High-temperature oxidation incurs irreversible thermal damage of coal. Hence, it is necessary to focus on the changes in mechanical properties of coal after a spontaneous combustion process is extinguished.

    Abstract Transportation of livestock is unavoidable in animal production. A total of 72 piglets were randomly divided into the CON group and the TSG group, and the piglets in CON group were transported for two hours. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of short-distance road transportation lasting 2 h on the jejunum of weaned piglets. Our results showed that compared with the control group, there was no impact on the growth performance of piglets in the transport group (P > 0.05). The concentrations of cortisol, heat shock protein (HSP)70, HSP90, C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-12, and interferon-γ and the activity of reactive oxygen species were increased in the jejunum of piglets in the transport group (P < 0.05 compared with the control group). The concentrations of glutathione peroxidase, claudin-1, occludin, and zonula occludens-1 showed no between-group differences (P > 0.05). Regarding intestinal morphology, the transport group showed infiltration of a small amount of lymphocytes into the jejunum mucosa epithelium that was accompanied by edema of the lamina propria, whereas the control group showed no obvious abnormalities. At the genus level, in the transport group, the 16S rRNA sequencing revealed a downward trend in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and an upward trend in the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae_unclassified. There was also increased mRNA expression of genes associated with inflammation in the transport group, but the genes and pathways related to apoptosis were not activated. In summary, weaned piglets undergoing 2 h of short-distance road transportation showed stress and inflammatory reactions of the jejunum but did not exhibit oxidative damage or activation of the apoptosis pathway of the jejunum. Furthermore, the growth performance of the piglets was not affected by the trip.

    Abstract Objectives Both the shortage of professional teaching resources and the expensive dental implant supplies impede the effective training of dental undergraduate in implantology. Virtual reality (VR) technology may provide solutions to solve these problems. This pilot study was implemented to explore the usability and acceptance of a VR application in the training of dental implant among dental students at the Jinan University School of Stomatology. Methods We designed and developed a VR system with head-mounted displays (HMDs) to assist dental implant training. Undergraduate dental students were invited to experience a 30-minute “Introduction to dental implants” VR-HMDs training module. A total of 119 dental students participated the training. Firstly, the VR interactive training on dental implant was described, illustrated and practiced. Next, a system usability scale (SUS) survey was used to verify the usability and feasibility of the VR application on training dental students. Finally, the participants were given a questionnaire to provide their perceptions and feedback of the usefulness of the VR application for training dental implant skills. Results The SUS score was 82.00 ± 10.79, indicating a top 10 percentage ranking of the system’s usabilitys. The participants’ answers to the questionnaire reflected most of them exhibited strong interests in the VR system, with a tendency that the female students were more confident than the male in manipulating the VR system. The participants generally acknowledged the usefulness of VR dental implants, ranking VR value above the traditional laboratory operations, and a preference for using the VR system on learning other skills. They also gave valuable suggestions on VR dental implants for substantial improvement. However, some students were not strongly positive about the VR training in this study, the reason might lie in a more theoretical module was selected for testing, which impacted the students’ ratings.     Abstract Abstract The performance of any engineering material is naturally limited by its structure, and while each material suffers from one or multiple shortcomings when considered for a particular application, these can be potentially circumvented by hybridization with other materials. By combining organic crystals with MXenes as thermal absorbers and charged polymers as adhesive counter-ionic components, we propose a simple access to flexible hybrid organic crystal materials that have the ability to mechanically respond to infrared light. The ensuing hybrid organic crystals are durable, respond fast, and can be cycled between straight and deformed state repeatedly without fatigue. The point of flexure and the curvature of the crystals can be precisely controlled by modulating the position, duration, and power of thermal excitation, and this control can be extended from individual hybrid crystals to motion of ordered two-dimensional arrays of such crystals. We also demonstrate that excitation can be achieved over very long distances (>3 m). The ability to control the shape with infrared light adds to the versatility in the anticipated applications of organic crystals, most immediately in their application as thermally controllable flexible optical waveguides for signal transmission in flexible organic electronics.
