Abstract Land use and landscape pattern highly affect water quality. Their relationship can assist in land-use management and improve land-use efficiency. In this study, a water quality survey of rivers and lakes was performed in 2020 to analyze the effects of land use and the landscape pattern on the water quality of the rivers and lakes in the Baoan Lake basin and is expected to provide a reference for land use planning. The results demonstrated that the effects of land use on water quality were generally higher during the dry season than during the wet season; however, the opposite was demonstrated for the landscape pattern index. Cropland and urban land were closely correlated with deteriorating water quality, with contributions to total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and ammonia nitrogen in the basin. The impact of the landscape pattern of the basin on water quality was controlled by the original land-use type. In addition, the landscape configuration formed different land-use types to produce different effects on water quality. The basin scale better explained the changes in water quality, especially for construction land, followed by the 250 m and 500 m scales in the buffer zone.

Abstract From 2018 to 2019, a survey of a typical lakes system in the Taihu Lake basin, China, was carried out. To provide reference values for the restoration and management of submerged vegetation in the lakes, the optical attenuation coefficient (Kd) and euphotic depth (Zeu) of the water body were calculated, and the distribution characteristics and factors that influenced the underwater optical field lands with different nutrition levels in the basin were analyzed. The main factor affecting the distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in lakes in the Taihu Lake basin is suspended solids (SS), dominated by inorganic suspended matter (ISS). Chlorophyll a (Chl-a), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) all affect, although weakly, the optical characteristics of lake wetlands. In CDOM, humic-like components have a more significant impact on Kd. The Kd of lakes in the Taihu Lake basin is closely related to permanganate index (CODMn) and especially total phosphorus (TP); The growth of aquatic vegetation is increased in Shanghu, Dianshan-Yuandang, Yangcheng, and Wuli Lakes that have higher Zeu and Zeu/Depth values.

Abstract Based on the monthly monitoring of Bao’an Lake in Hubei Province from 2018 to 2020, the eutrophication level of Bao’an Lake in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is investigated using the comprehensive trophic level index (TLI), chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficient, and the phytoplankton water quality biological method. The influencing factors are then identified. The results demonstrate that the overall water quality of Bao’an Lake remained at levels III–V during 2018–2020. Due to different eutrophication assessment methods, the results are different, but all show that Bao’an Lake is in a eutrophication state as a whole. The eutrophication level of Bao’an Lake is observed to vary with time, exhibiting an increasing then decreasing trend between 2018–2020, while levels are high in summer and autumn, and low in winter and spring. Moreover, the eutrophication level of Bao’an Lake presents an obviously varying spatial distribution. Potamogeton crispus is the dominant species of the Bao’an Lake, the water quality is good in spring when Potamogeton crispus vigorously grows, but poor in summer and autumn. The permanganate index (COD Mn ) and total phosphorous (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) contents are identified as the main influencing factors of the eutrophication level of Bao’an Lake, with a significant relationship observed between Chl-a and TP ( p < 0.01). The above results provide a solid theoretical basis for the ecological restoration of Bao’an Lake.

Abstract AbstractInflowing rivers input many pollutants into lakes, affecting their water quality and ecological health. The contents of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and organic matter (OM) in the Dagang river, the largest inflowing river of Daye Lake, were measured in 2019 to determine the sediment pollution status. The sediment pollution was evaluated to provide information for pollution source control of the Dagang river and Daye Lake basin. The results showed that: (1) The average TN, TP and OM contents in the Dagang river sediments were 1323.72 mg/kg, 1378.65 mg/kg and 7.20%, respectively. (2) The comprehensive pollution index of the Dagang river was 3.64–4.42, indicating severe pollution at all sampling points. All sites had organic pollution except for DG5 and DG6. (3) The source of the dissolved OM (DOM) was exogenous and endogenous, which FI and BIX were 1.58–1.70 and 0.7–1.51, respectively. The characteristics of endogenous pollution are more obvious. (4) TN was significantly (p < 0.05) and positively correlated with the TP (r = 0.72) and OM (r = 0.87), indicating similar sources of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). N may have been derived from organic N components in the OM. Targeted measures should be implemented to control the nutrient input and reduce nutrient pollution, and the focus should be on OM pollution sources.

Abstract AbstractEutrophication caused by nutrients and organic matter (OM) pollution is a common problem in the world. The contents of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and OM in sediments were determined in four typical lakes in southeastern Hubei, China, in the spring of 2019, and their pollution status was evaluated by organic and comprehensive pollution indexes to identify pollution sources and provide specific directions for the pollution control in key areas of the lakes. We found the following: (1) Both nutrients and OM in Cihu Lake and Bao’an Lake were relatively high. Cihu Lake had the highest nutrient and OM in both surface and core sediments. TN, TP and OM in the surface sediments of Cihu Lake reached 700.9 mg/kg, 1668.8 mg/kg and 62.8 kg/g, respectively. The contents of nutrients and OM in Daye Lake and Liangzi Lake were relatively low. OM in these two lakes was significantly lower than that in the Cihu Lake (p < 0.05). (2) The organic pollution and comprehensive pollution revealed that the pollution level of Cihu Lake and Bao’an Lake was moderate to severe. The level of pollution in Daye Lake and Liangzi Lake was mainly mild and moderate. (3) TN pollution was the main factor affecting sediment pollution in the four lakes compared to TP. The risks associated with N pollution merit increased attention. (4) Correlation analysis showed that there was not always a significant correlation between nutrients and OM in surface sediments (p > 0.05). It indicated that the sources of nutrients and OM in sediments were not identical but were affected by many factors. However, the relationship between nutrients and OM was closer in core sediments. In the future, targeted measures should be taken to reduce sediment pollution based on specific pollution sources and pollution conditions in the four lakes, especially Cihu Lake.

Abstract Based on a field investigation conducted in May 2019, the spatial distribution characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediments of Wuli Lake in the Taihu Lake basin were analyzed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that: (1) The overall water quality of West Wuli Lake was significantly better than that of East Wuli Lake. The water transparency, measured in Secchi depth (SD), of West Wuli Lake was higher than that of East Wuli Lake, while the suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) were higher in East Wuli Lake than in West Wuli Lake. (2) The spatial distribution of a(350), M and SR values of DOM in surface sediment in Wuli Lake differed; a(350) values were highest in the northwestern part of Wuli Lake, while M and SR values were highest in the eastern part. The mean value of SR in Wuli Lake was 2.12 ± 0.67, indicating that the DOM contained more authigenic humus; the mean M value was less than 3.5, indicating that the proportion of humic acid was higher than that of fulvic acid. (3) The ranges of the biogenic index (BIX), the humic index (HIX) and the fluorescence index (FI) of surface sediments in Wuli Lake were 0.64~0.85, 3.79~4.84 and 1.72~1.84, respectively, indicating that surface sediments in Wuli Lake were characterized by authigenic sources, and the humic components of DOM in sediments were characterized by a dual contribution from terrestrial and endogenous sources.

Abstract Nutrients, organic matter (OM), and heavy metals (HMs) in lake sediments are critical elements contributing to water pollution. In April 2019, surface sediments from Wanghu Lake were collected, and the nutrient, organic matter, and heavy metal content of the sediments were determined. We mainly evaluated the sediment pollutants through four evaluation methods to assess pollution and provide a reference for pollution control in Wanghu Lake. The results indicated that the averages of total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were (1045.74 ± 190.17) mg/kg, (945.27 ± 203.56) mg/kg; most of them showed serious pollution and moderate pollution, respectively. OM was (32.31 ± 5.11) g/kg. Among them, TP and OM in the northwestern Wanghu Lake were significantly higher than those in the eastern lake ( p < 0.05). It shows that nutrients are greatly affected by historical aquaculture and urban human activities. TP was the most serious in the center of the lake, and the source of pollution was mainly the historical deposition. The average of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, and As in the sediments were 2.15, 1.09, 1.93, 1.37, 1.28, 1.49, 2.60, 1.77 times that of the soil background values of Hubei Province, respectively. Hg and Cd were the main factors contributing to the surface sediments, with levels at considerable and moderate risks, respectively.

Abstract This study aimed to reveal the distribution characteristics and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediments of typical lakes in the southeastern of the Hubei province and provide a reference for pollution control of eutrophic lakes. The sediments of four typical lakes (Liangzi, Baoan, Daye, and Qingshan) in the southeastern of the Hubei Province were investigated in May 2019. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrixes characteristics of DOM were obtained by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, the DOM fluorescence components were resolved by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The results showed that: (1) The absorption coefficient a 350 in surface sediments followed the order: Baoan Lake (16.99 ± 3.82 m −1 ) > Qingshan Lake (15.37 ± 3.8 m −1 ) > Liangzi Lake (12.54 ± 5.58 m −1 ) > Daye Lake (12.43 ± 1.43 m −1 ). Specifically, with increasing depth in the sediment cores, a 350 increased and then gradually decreased in Daye Lake and Baoan Lake, but fluctuated in Liangzi Lake and Qingshan Lake with a roughly decreasing trend. (2) Two humic-like components (C1, C2) and one protein-like component (C3) were identified via PARAFAC. This analysis also showed that the surface sediment fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) was dominated by protein-like, while the sediment core FDOM was dominated by humic-like in Liangzi Lake. The proportion of humic-like in FDOM was higher than protein-like in surface sediments and sediment cores of Baoan, Daye, and Qingshan Lakes. (3) The DOM of surface sediments in the Liangzi Lake comprised mostly autochthonous components, mainly produced by the vital activities of aquatic organisms. The DOM of surface sediments in Baoan Lake and Qingshan Lake showed weak humic and moderate autochthonous characteristics. The humification of DOM in sediment cores of Liangzi, Baoan, and Qingshan Lakes gradually decreased from depth to the surface. The DOM in surface sediments of Daye Lake ...
