Abstract Background: Even in patients who survive resuscitation through multidisciplinary treatment, minor persistent symptoms can make hospital discharge difficult. Herein, we report a case of myocardial infarction with intractable symptoms following resuscitation, which were successfully treated using Kampo medicine.
Case presentation: A 71-year-old man experienced intractable cough and hiccups following resuscitation for acute myocardial infarction. Despite successful invasive treatment for his cardiac condition, the patient's persistent symptoms hindered his recovery and discharge from hospital. The patient was diagnosed with qi and blood deficiency, qi stagnation, and fluid retention, before being prescribed the Kampo medicine "bukuryoingohangekobokuto (BRIHK)". Within days of treatment initiation, his symptoms notably improved, allowing him to be discharged.
Conclusion: This case highlights the potential of Kampo medicine for addressing post-resuscitation symptoms that are refractory to conventional treatments, and emphasizes the importance of integrating Kampo medicine with Western medical practices to enhance patient care and quality of life.

Abstract This paper reports a new concept of a film-shaped micropump array for biomedical perfusion. The detailed concept, design, fabrication process, and performance evaluation using prototypes are described. In this micropump array, an open circuit potential (OCP) is generated by a planar biofuel cell (BFC), which in turn generates electro-osmotic flows (EOFs) in multiple through-holes arranged perpendicular to the micropump plane. The micropump array is thin and wireless, so it can be cut like postage stamps, easily installed in any small location, and can act as a planar micropump in solutions containing the biofuels glucose and oxygen. Perfusion at local sites are difficult with conventional techniques using multiple separate components such as micropumps and energy sources. This micropump array is expected to be applied to the perfusion of biological fluids in small locations near or inside cultured cells, cultured tissues, living organisms, and so on.

Abstract The establishment of animal models for Parkinson's disease (PD) has been challenging. Nevertheless, once established, they will serve as valuable tools for elucidating the causes and pathogenesis of PD, as well as for developing new strategies for its treatment. Following the recent discovery of a series of PD causative genes in familial cases, teleost fishes, including zebrafish and medaka, have often been used to establish genetic PD models because of their ease of breeding and gene manipulation, as well as the high conservation of gene orthologs. Some of the fish lines can recapitulate PD phenotypes, which are often more pronounced than those in rodent genetic models. In addition, a new experimental teleost fish, turquoise killifish, can be used as a sporadic PD model, because it spontaneously manifests age-dependent PD phenotypes. Several PD fish models have already made significant contributions to the discovery of novel PD pathological features, such as cytosolic leakage of mitochondrial DNA and pathogenic phosphorylation in α-synuclein. Therefore, utilizing various PD fish models with distinct degenerative phenotypes will be an effective strategy for identifying emerging facets of PD pathogenesis and therapeutic modalities.

Abstract Background: In its normal anatomical relationship, the inferior vena cava is located on the right side of the abdominal aorta. Iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) is a pathological condition in which a blood clot is formed due to blood flow obstruction when the left common iliac vein is compressed between the right common iliac artery and the vertebral body. Therefore, right-sided IVCS (RIVCS) is rare. The effectiveness of treatment for RIVCS has not been sufficiently investigated.
Case summary: A 51-year-old man developed deep vein thrombosis in the right lower extremity and non-massive pulmonary embolism during steroid treatment for IgA nephropathy. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) suggested iliac compression syndrome. Symptoms improved with the use of direct oral anticoagulants and compression stockings. At the 8-month follow-up, the clinical course was uneventful.
Discussion: The causes of RIVCS in this case are believed to be the effects of steroids, prolonged sitting, and compression of the right external iliac vein. However, considering that deep vein thrombosis did not form in the left lower limb where there was no venous compression, it can be considered that the compression of the right external iliac vein had a significant impact. This case has been followed up for 8 months with anticoagulants and is progressing well. This is the first case to report the course of RIVCS treated conservatively with anticoagulant therapy for 8 months. This case suggested that conservative treatment is effective for RIVCS.

Abstract Modern western dietary habits and low physical activity cause metabolic abnormalities and abnormally elevated levels of metabolites such as low-density lipoprotein, which can lead to immune cell activation, and inflammatory reactions, and atherosclerosis. Appropriate stimulation of vascular endothelial cells can confer protective responses against inflammatory reactions and atherosclerotic conditions. This study aims to determine whether a designed optogenetic approach is capable of affecting functional changes in vascular endothelial cells and to evaluate its potential for therapeutic regulation of vascular inflammatory responses

Abstract In freshwater systems, contributions of chemosynthetic products by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in sediments as nutritional resources in benthic food webs remain unclear, even though chemosynthetic products might be an important nutritional resource for benthic food webs in deep-sea hydrothermal vents and shallow marine systems. To study geochemical aspects of this trophic pathway, we sampled sediment cores and benthic animals at two sites (90 and 50 m water depths) in the largest freshwater (mesotrophic) lake in Japan: Lake Biwa. Stable carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotopes of the sediments and animals were measured to elucidate the sulfur nutritional resources for the benthic food web precisely by calculating the contributions of the incorporation of sulfide-derived sulfur to the biomass and of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle supporting the sulfur nutritional resource. The recovered sediment cores showed increases in

Abstract Background: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesions contain various collateral channels. Only a few reports have described CTO with collateral channels from the bronchial arteries.
Case summary: Herein, we report the case of a 59-year-old man with a left circumflex (LCX) coronary artery CTO with collateral channels from the bronchial arteries. The J-CTO score was 1. After confirming myocardial viability and myocardial ischaemia using a stress myocardial perfusion imaging test, we performed percutaneous coronary intervention for the CTO lesion. Successful revascularization was achieved by adopting the antegrade approach with the angiogram guidance of distal visualization using the bronchial artery.
Discussion: Notably, there are no other reports of LCX CTO with collateral channels from the bronchial artery. Distal visualization of the distal true lumen is essential for the success of the antegrade approach. Furthermore, appropriate distal visualization helps to avoid unnecessary retrograde approaches and reduce complications.

Abstract Background: AO/OTA 31A3 fractures (A3 fractures) have risk for postoperative complications with major impact on morbidity and mortality. For older patients, limited information is available for factors associated with postoperative complications. We aimed to assess factors associated with postoperative complications after surgery using cephalomedullary nails.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the information on patients aged ≥65 years who underwent surgery using cephalomedullary nails for trochanteric fractures due to low-energy trauma in three hospitals. Postoperative complications were diagnosed when patients were identified as nonunion, cutout of lag screw, or nail breakage. First, we compared differences including age, sex, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification system, preoperative waking ability, fracture type, nail length, neck shaft angle, reduction method, reduction quality and tip apex distance between patients with and without postoperative complications. Second, multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed to assess factors associated with postoperative complications resulting from A3 fractures.
Results: Among 120 patients with A3 fractures, postoperative complications were identified in 12 patients (10.0%). Postoperative complications were significantly more likely to develop among patients with poor reduction quality (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 35.0 [4.43-275.9]) and a tip-apex distance ≥25 mm (16.4 [1.92-140.3]).
Conclusions: These findings suggest that surgeons should aim to perform appropriate postoperative reduction and to prevent postoperative complications when using a cephalomedullary nail for A3 fractures among older patients.

Abstract Objective: To investigate gravity perception disturbance (GPD) in patients with Meniere disease (MD), we classified GPD type based on the results of the head-tilt perception gain (HTPG) and the head-upright subjective visual vertical (HU-SVV) evaluated by the head-tilt SVV (HT-SVV) test in patients with unilateral MD.
Methods: We conducted the HT-SVV test on 115 patients with unilateral MD and 115 healthy controls. Among the 115 patients, the period from the first vertigo episode to the examination (PFVE) was known for 91 patients.
Results: The HT-SVV test classified 60.9% and 39.1% of patients with unilateral MD as GPD and non-GPD, respectively. GPD was classified according to HTPG/HU-SVV combinations as follows: Type A GPD (21.7%, normal HTPG/abnormal HU-SVV), Type B GPD (23.5%, abnormal HTPG/normal HU-SVV), and Type C GPD (15.7%, abnormal HTPG/abnormal HU-SVV). As the PFVE became longer, patients with non-GPD and Type A GPD decreased; however, those with Types B and C GPD increased.
Conclusion: This study provides novel information on unilateral MD from the perspective of gravity perception by classifying GPD based on the results of the HT-SVV test. This study's findings suggest that overcompensation for vestibular dysfunction in patients with unilateral MD exhibited by large HTPG abnormalities may be strongly associated with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.
