    Abstract Diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) is the increase in energy expenditure (EE) associated with food intake. Increasing DIT may lead to weight loss, so it is expected that increasing DIT will decrease body mass index and body fat mass. DIT in humans has been measured in various ways, but there is no way to calculate absolute DIT values in mice. Therefore, we developed a method to measure DIT in mice by applying a method more commonly used in humans. First, we measure the energy metabolism of mice under fasting conditions. EE is then plotted against the square root of activity, and a linear regression equation is fitted to the data. Next, we measure the energy metabolism of mice fed ad libitum and plotted EE in the same way. DIT is calculated by subtracting the predicted EE value from the EE value of mice fed at the same activity count. This method not only allows observation of the time course of the absolute value of DIT but also allows calculation of the ratio of DIT to caloric intake and the ratio of DIT to EE.

    Abstract Recently, the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related head and neck cancers (oropharynx and oral) has increased rapidly. Secondary HPV-related cancers after an initial index cancer at a site associated with an HPV infection have been reported, including invasive cervical, vaginal, vulval, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancer. Here, we describe two female oropharyngeal cancer patients who had been treated for secondary cervical cancers with chemoradiotherapy and achieved a good clinical response.

    Abstract Introduction: Patient satisfaction is an important outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, we cannot predict how and why patients are satisfied or dissatisfied with TKA. The hypothesis of this study was that patient-reported outcomes (PROs) correlate with in vivo kinematics after TKA.
    Materials and methods: One hundred knees were analyzed after TKA. The in vivo kinematics of deep knee bending motion were estimated from single-plane fluoroscopy using a two-to-three-dimensional registration technique. Active knee flexion, femoral rotation and rollback were evaluated. The PROs were obtained after surgery using the 2011 Knee Society Scoring System (KSS), and their relationship with in vivo kinematics was determined.
    Results: The average minimum and maximum flexion were -2.4 ± 7.3° and 113.2 ± 13.6°, respectively. The average femoral rotation was 7.4 ± 3.4°, and the average medial and lateral rollback were 2.4 ± 4.8 mm and 7.2 ± 5.6 mm, respectively. The multiple regression analysis revealed that the maximum flexion angle significantly contributed to symptoms and satisfaction. In addition, lateral rollback was also a significant factor affecting patient satisfaction. Lateral rollback and lateral Anterior-Posterior (AP) position at maximum flexion were correlated with the maximum flexion angle, whereas femoral rotation did not correlate with flexion angles.
    Conclusions: Maximum flexion and lateral rollback are important for better patient satisfaction after TKA. To obtain the maximum flexion angle, it was necessary to perform the normal kinematic pattern with a large amount of lateral rollback.

    Abstract Acute alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) is a syndrome that occurs in heavy and long-term drinkers and results in severe jaundice and liver failure. The mortality rate in severe cases is 20%-50% at 28 days, and in cases that do not improve despite appropriately timed corticosteroid therapy, the mortality rate reaches 70% at 6 months. The only curative treatment is early liver transplantation, but less than 2% of patients with severe AH are eligible. In order to improve the prognosis, diagnostic tools are needed to detect appropriate cases at risk of severe conditions, and new therapies need to be developed that can replace corticosteroids. Recent research has revealed that the pathogenesis of AH involves a complex of factors, including changes in the gut microbiota, inflammatory and cytokine signalling, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, and abnormalities in the hepatic regenerative capacity. Non-invasive diagnostic tools focusing on these specific pathologies have been reported in recent years. In addition, several novel agents targeting specific pathways are currently being developed and tested in clinical trials. This review will provide an overview of alcohol-associated hepatitis and focus on the latest diagnostic tools, particularly non-invasive biomarkers, and novel therapies.

    Abstract Cerebral vasospasm is a frequent complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage. We report a case of chronic subdural hematoma complicated by cerebral vasospasm after burr hole evacuation. A 74-year-old woman underwent burr hole evacuation of a chronic subdural hematoma. She developed left hemiparesis and disturbance of consciousness on postoperative day 3. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a right parietal infarct and decreased cerebral blood flow signal in the right middle cerebral artery territory. Digital subtraction angiography showed multiple segmental narrowings of the right middle cerebral artery. Her neurological symptoms recovered with conservative treatment. Follow-up angiography showed improvement in the arterial narrowing, which finally led to a diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm. Cerebral vasospasm can occur after burr hole evacuation of chronic subdural hematoma. Magnetic resonance angiography is useful for determining the cause of postoperative neurological worsening in chronic subdural hematoma patients.

    Abstract We have studied a machine learning (ML) technique for refining images acquired during in situ observation using liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy. Our model is constructed using a U-Net architecture and a ResNet encoder. For training our ML model, we prepared an original image dataset that contained pairs of images of samples acquired with and without a solution present. The former images were used as noisy images, and the latter images were used as corresponding ground truth images. The number of pairs of image sets was 1,204, and the image sets included images acquired at several different magnifications and electron doses. The trained model converted a noisy image into a clear image. The time necessary for the conversion was on the order of 10 ms, and we applied the model to in situ observations using the software Gatan DigitalMicrograph (DM). Even if a nanoparticle was not visible in a view window in the DM software because of the low electron dose, it was visible in a successive refined image generated by our ML model.

    Abstract Aim: Emergency resuscitative thoracotomy is a potentially lifesaving procedure for patients with cardiac pulmonary arrest and profound circulatory failure resulting from a severe injury. However, survival rate post-emergency resuscitative thoracotomy shows considerable variation, with many studies constrained by limited sample sizes and ambiguous criteria for inclusion. Herein, we assessed the outcomes of emergency resuscitative thoracotomy and identified predictors of futility using Japan Trauma Data Bank data.
    Methods: Data of patients aged ≥18 years between 2004 and 2019 were analyzed. The primary outcome measure was survival at discharge. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the survivor and nonsurvivor groups. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of survival in patients undergoing emergency resuscitative thoracotomy while adjusting for confounding factors.
    Results: Among patients who underwent emergency resuscitative thoracotomy, 684/5062 (13.5%) survived. Age <65 years (adjusted odds ratio, 1.351; 95% confidence interval, 1.130-1.615;
    Conclusion: The survival rate for emergency resuscitative thoracotomy in Japan stands at approximately 13.5%. Factors contributing to survival include younger age, absence of cardiopulmonary arrest at emergency department arrival, lack of severe trauma, and sustaining penetrating injuries.

    Abstract People living alone encounter well-being challenges due to unnoticed personal situations. Thus, it is essential to monitor their activities and encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyle habits without imposing a mental burden, aiming to enhance their overall well-being. To realize such a support system, its components should be simple and loosely coupled to handle various internet of things (IoT)-based smart home applications. In this study, we propose an exercise promotion system for individuals living alone to encourage them to adopt good lifestyle habits. The system comprises autonomous IoT devices as agents and is realized using an agent-oriented IoT architecture. It estimates user activity via sensors and offers exercise advice based on recognized conditions, surroundings, and preferences. The proposed system accepts user feedback to improve status estimation accuracy and offers better advice. The proposed system was evaluated from three perspectives through experiments with subjects. Initially, we demonstrated the system's operation through agent cooperation. Then, we showed it adapts to user preferences within two weeks. Third, the users expressed satisfaction with the detection accuracy regarding their stay-at-home status and the relevance of the advice provided. They were also motivated to engage in exercise based on a subjective evaluation, as indicated by preliminary results.
