Abstract It can be a great challenge for second language (L2) learners to comprehend meanings that are implied in utterances rather than the surface meaning of what was said. Moreover, L2 learners' attitudes toward pragmatic learning are unknown. This mixed-methods study investigates L2 learners' ability to comprehend conversational implicatures. It also explores their beliefs about and intentions to develop this ability using Ajzen's theory of planned behavior (TPB). A total of 498 freshmen from a public university in China participated in the study. Data were collected using a web-based test, stimulated recall tasks and semi-structured interviews. Results show that the participants differed in recognizing the intended meanings. Complicated factors account for the variations. In addition to the types of implicature, learners' beliefs about developing pragmatic comprehension also influence their learning intention, and subsequent performance. These beliefs include learners' multi-layered, complex attitudes toward the outcomes of pragmatic learning, perceived self-efficacy beliefs regarding language proficiency and L2 cultural knowledge, actual behavioral control over opportunities and resources for pragmatic learning, and perceptions of less social pressure on pragmatic learning. The use of TPB may help language teachers and test designers to understand learners' beliefs about L2 pragmatic learning in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Understanding the factors influencing learners' intention will help design more effective teaching curricula that may integrate pragmatic instruction and testing in the future.

Abstract The role that individual difference factors play in pragmatic learning behavior has received increasing attention in second-language (L2) pragmatics. However, there is a dearth of studies exploring the relationship between learners' motivational variables and their pragmatic production. To address this gap, the present study aims to examine a model of the ideal L2 self, self-efficacy, willingness to communicate (WTC), and pragmatic production among English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners. The study also seeks to explore the mediating role of WTC within this structural model. For this purpose, a total of 427 undergraduate students at a public university in China were recruited for an online survey. The structural validity of the questionnaires was established using a confirmatory-factor analysis, while the hypothesized structural relations between the variables were tested through structural-equation modeling. The results demonstrated that self-efficacy and WTC significantly and directly predicated pragmatic production. Nevertheless, the ideal L2 self influenced pragmatic production indirectly, through the mediation of WTC. The study concludes by providing implications for teaching and by offering suggestions for future research.

Abstract Research on language learning motivations has been extensive. However, research on learners' motivations for learning Chinese has been underexplored compared to that for learning English. The current study aimed to investigate the motivations among 256 Turkish learners of Chinese as foreign language (CFL) who studied at five universities in Turkey. Participants completed an adapted questionnaire based on Gardner's Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). A series of statistical analysis revealed three major findings. First, integrativeness, attitudes towards learning situation and attitudes towards learning Chinese were identified as the three most important motivational variables, followed by instrumentality, and parental encouragement. Language anxiety and passive motivation seemed to play a weaker role in Turkish CFL learners' motivations for learning Chinese at the tertiary level. Second, the results also show that females exhibited higher motivation to learn the target language compared to their male peers. Third, the choice of major among CFL learners appeared to influence their language learning motivations, with a notable distinction between Chinese majors and non-Chinese majors in five motivational variables: integrativeness attitudes towards the learning situation, language anxiety, parental encouragement, and passive motivation.

Abstract With the development of periodontal regenerative technology, an increasing number of scholars reported that advanced periodontitis involving teeth can be preserved through intentional replantation. Intentional replantation has become the last possible method to preserve natural teeth for advance periodontitis with signs of tooth extraction. However, the indications of intentional replantation are strict, and the success of the operation is closely related to the condition of cases and the operation skills of doctors. In this article, the operation steps and criteria of intentional replantation were summarized by introducing three success cases of advanced periodontitis involving teeth preserved by intentional replantation. The relevant factors that affect the prognosis of intentional replantation in advanced periodontitis involving teeth preservation were analyzed to help clinicians preserve natural teeth.

Abstract Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have been incorporated as external information into recommendation systems to ensure the high-confidence system. Recently, Contrastive Learning (CL) framework has been widely used in knowledge-based recommendation, owing to the ability to mitigate data sparsity and it considers the expandable computing of the system. However, existing CL-based methods still have the following shortcomings in dealing with the introduced knowledge: (1) For the knowledge view generation, they only perform simple data augmentation operations on KGs, resulting in the introduction of noise and irrelevant information, and the loss of essential information. (2) For the knowledge view encoder, they simply add the edge information into some GNN models, without considering the relations between edges and entities. Therefore, this paper proposes a Knowledge-based Recommendation with Contrastive Learning (KRCL) framework, which generates dual views from user–item interaction graph and KG. Specifically, through data enhancement technology, KRCL introduces historical interaction information, background knowledge and item–item semantic information. Then, a novel relation-aware GNN model is proposed to encode the knowledge view. Finally, through the designed contrastive loss, the representations of the same item in different views are closer to each other. Compared with various recommendation methods on benchmark datasets, KRCL has shown significant improvement in different scenarios.

Abstract Droplet sorting is one of the fundamental manipulations of droplet-based microfluidics. Although many sorting methods have already been proposed, there is still a demand to develop new sorting methods for various applications of droplet-based microfluidics. This work presents numerical investigations on droplet sorting with asymmetric acute junctions. It is found that the asymmetric acute junctions could achieve volume-based sorting and velocity-based sorting. The pressure distributions in the asymmetric junctions are discussed to reveal the physical mechanism behind the droplet sorting. The dependence of the droplet sorting on the droplet volume, velocity, and junction angle is explored. The possibility of the employment of the proposed sorting method in most real experiments is also discussed. This work provides a new, simple, and cost-effective passive strategy to separate droplets in microfluidic channels. Moreover, the proposed acute junctions could be used in combination with other sorting methods, which may boost more opportunities to sort droplets.

Abstract This exploratory research compares the interactive metadiscourse use by native English-speaking English for academic purposes (EAP) writing teachers in the United Kingdom and their non-native counterparts in the Chinese contexts. The analysis is based on a self-compiled corpus, including two sub-corpora, which were composed of instructor contributions to classroom discourse: eight sessions of EAP lessons from the Chinese context and eight sessions of EAP lessons from the British context. Adopting an interpersonal model of metadiscourse, the two sub-corpora were compared to examine the similarities and differences in their use of interactive metadiscourse. Findings of the comparative analysis reveal that EAP teachers from both contexts rely heavily on transition markers and frame markers to organize their teaching but differ in particular linguistic realizations. This may indicate the impact of a range of factors such as logical preferences, development order of acquisition, discourse community, and speech community on teachers' interactive metadiscourse strategies. The article concludes with a few implications for metadiscourse research in spoken academic genres.
