    Abstract Adult specimens of Pomphorhynchus fuhaiensis were identified from common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in Ulungur Lake of northwest China, and acanthors, acanthellae, cystacanths dissected from Gammarus lacustris in a small tributary of Ulungur River for the first time. The acanthocephalans were also found in crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.), tench (Tinca tinca L.), oriental bream (Abramis brama orientalis Berg), and ide (Leuciscus idus L.) in the lake. This species is distinguished from other species in Pomphorhynchus by its large, spherical bulb and very long neck as well as by a cylindrical proboscis armed with 15–17 longitudinal rows of 9–12 hooks each. The anterior proboscis hooks are almost uniform in size and shape, the sixth hook in a short row and the seventh hook in long row decrease abruptly in size posteriorly with the last end hook being a little larger than the prebasal hook, and in a ring; posterior proboscis hooks much more widely spaced. Furthermore, the lemnisci are claviform. The mean neck:trunk ratio is about 0.5, which is larger than most other species in Pomphorhynchus. Females are larger than males. In males, the testes are in one-third to one-half of the trunk, equal, ovoid–spheroid, usually contiguous, and small relative to the body size, and there are 6 ovoid cement glands. Pomphorhynchus fuhaiensis is similar to Pomphorhynchus laevis but can be distinguished by the number of longitudinal rows of hooks. Pomphorhynchus laevis is armed with 18–20 longitudinal rows of 11–13 hooks, P. fuhaiensis is armed with 15–17 longitudinal rows of 9–12 hooks.

    Abstract Background: Habitat fragmentation may result in the reduction of diversity of parasite communities by affecting population size and dispersal pattern of species. In the flood plain of the Yangtze River in China, many lakes, which were once connected with the river, have become isolated since the 1950s from the river by the construction of dams and sluices, with many larger lakes subdivided into smaller ones by road embankments. These artificial barriers have inevitably obstructed the migration of fish between the river and lakes and also among lakes. In this study, the gastrointestinal helminth communities were investigated in a carnivorous fish, the yellowhead catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, from two connected and five isolated lakes in the flood plain in order to detect the effect of lake fragmentation on the parasite communities.
    Results: A total of 11 species of helminths were recorded in the stomach and intestine of P. fulvidraco from seven lakes, including two lakes connected with the Yangtze River, i.e. Poyang and Dongting lakes, and five isolated lakes, i.e. Honghu, Liangzi, Tangxun, Niushan and Baoan lakes. Mean helminth individuals and diversity of helminth communities in Honghu and Dongting lakes was lower than in the other five lakes. The nematode Procamallanus fulvidraconis was the dominant species of communities in all the seven lakes. No significant difference in the Shannon-Wiener index was detected between connected lakes (0.48) and isolated lakes (0.50). The similarity of helminth communities between Niushan and Baoan lakes was the highest (0.6708), and the lowest was between Tangxun and Dongting lakes (0.1807). The similarity was low between Dongting and the other lakes, and the similarity decreased with the geographic distance among these lakes. The helminth community in one connected lake, Poyang Lake was clustered with isolated lakes, but the community in Dongting Lake was separated in the tree.
    Conclusion: The similarity in the helminth communities of this fish in the flood-plain lakes may be attributed to the historical connection of these habitats and to the completion of the life-cycles of this fish as well as the helminth species within the investigated habitats. The diversity and the digenean majority in the helminth communities can be related to the diet of this fish, and to the lacustrine and macrophytic characters of the habitats. The lake isolation from the river had little detectable effect on the helminth communities of the catfish in flood-plain lakes of the Yangtze River. The low similarities in helminth communities between the Dongting Lake and others may just be a reflection of its unique water environment and anthropogenic alterations or fragmentation in this lake.

    Abstract Unlabelled: Functional brain imaging targeting the presynaptic dopamine nerve terminal of the nigrostriatal system has been used for monitoring disease progression and evaluating therapeutic effectiveness in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 binds with high selectivity to the dopamine transporters in the striatum and can be imaged with SPECT 4 h after injection. We studied the test and retest reproducibility of (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT measures in patients with PD to assess the reliability of (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 for longitudinal evaluation of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic function.
    Methods: Each of 20 patients with PD underwent 2 (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT scans at an interval of 2-3 wk. Patients were imaged 4 h after injection of 925 MBq (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1. Two imaging outcome measures were evaluated: the ratio of specific-striatal-to-nonspecific uptake and the striatal asymmetry index. For both measures, the test/retest variability was calculated. Reproducibility of the 2 outcome measures was evaluated in terms of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% limits of agreement.
    Results: The mean ratio of specific-striatal-to-nonspecific uptake showed excellent test/retest reproducibility with a mean variability of 10.20%, an ICC of 0.95 (95% confidence interval = 0.88-0.98), and 95% limits of agreement, ranging from -0.19 to 0.19. The striatal asymmetry index had larger test/retest variability (60.41%), a slightly smaller ICC of 0.86 (95% confidence interval = 0.65-0.95), and a wider range of 95% limits of agreement (-16.09 to 15.19). In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between the mean ratio of specific-striatal-to-nonspecific uptake and the motor subscore of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale in both test and retest conditions.
    Conclusion: Our data indicate that the imaging outcome expressed by the mean ratio of specific-striatal-to-nonspecific uptake has an excellent test/retest reproducibility and correlates with disease severity. These findings suggest that (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT imaging is useful and feasible for measuring disease progression in PD.

    Abstract The frequency distributions of the parasitic copepod Sinergasilus polycolpus were examined in silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis during a disease outbreak of the 2 species of fish in a reservoir in China. The mean abundance of the copepod was positively related with host length and age, and the overdispersion of the copepod in both silver and bighead carp was fitted well with negative binomial distribution. Although parasite-induced host mortality was observed, a peaked age-parasite abundance curve was not detected in the present parasite-host system. It is also proposed that this peaked age-abundance curve is unlikely to be observed in its natural host populations.
