Abstract One of the main topics discussed by historians, including those of science, in the late twentieth century is the historical introspection into "modernism," a term based on a teleological view of the world. According to the conventional understanding of world history, the historical process to modernity that has led to the Civil Revolution, Scientific Revolution, and Capitalism is linear and universally inevitable, and this-in other words, Eurocentrism-implies that only the historical experiences of Europeans are relevant. This mainstream view of world history has spread the dichotomous analytic framework of historiography and reinforced cultural essentialism, which has eventually given a Euro- or Sino-centric hierarchical presentation of history. This type of world view rests on the assumption that there are intrinsic and incommensurable differences between cultures or localities, which a lot of commentators and scholars have constantly countered by arguing that that presumption does not comply with what historical sources say. Drawing on some trail-blazing scholarship of cultural studies and others, this essay turns away from this "conventional" framework of historiography and presents a world view that is framed in the context of trans-locality, interconnectedness, plurality, heterogeneity, polycentricity, and diversity. In recent years, in an attempt to search for new analytic frames, some endeavors have emerged in the field of cultural or science studies to go beyond just providing critical commentaries or case studies. Furthermore, researchers and scholars in the history of science, technology and medicine in East Asia have put an effort into conceptualizing and establishing such new analytic frames. Among those approaches are attempts to shed light upon the trans-local yet global interconnectedness (emphatically in pre-modern periods), diverse historical trajectories to modernities, and polycentric as well as plural landscape of scientific enterprises over time and across the world. On top of these new visions of world history, this essay further elaborates on and proposes some conceptive ideas: (1) "Tradition" as a set of recipes, which could replace the idea of the living yet dead tradition; (2) "Medicine" as a problem-solving activity, which calls more attention to historical actors of East Asian medicine; (3) "East Asian medicines" as a family of trans-locally related practices in East Asia, which would lead to going beyond the nationalist historiography such as Sino-centrism; (4) "Problematique" as the system of questions and concepts which make up East Asian medicine, which should reveal what East Asian medicines have been about; (5) "Styles of Practice" for the historiography of East Asian medicines, as opposed to the cultural account, epistemological historiography or praxiography; and, as an illustrative example, (6) "Topological Bodies" for the history of anatomy in East Asia. Going beyond tradition and dichotomous historiography, these new methodologies or conceptual ideas will contribute to the understanding of the history of East Asian medicines.

Abstract Understanding and incorporating patients' perspectives are necessary to address the emerging challenge of chronic disease management. Our study examined patients' perceptions and experiences for the current chronic disease management system in South Korea. Focus group interviews were conducted on 23 patients and 11 themes emerged by qualitative content analysis. The participants experienced in terms of provider-patient interaction: doctors only prescribe medicine, doctors who provide conventional advice, doctors who do not respect the patients' opinion, long wait times and inadequate consultations, lack of personalized care, and freedom to select another doctor. They also experienced in their community and health system: struggling alone, commercial media and folk remedies, lack of IT technologies for care, demanding visiting services, and lack of collaboration in the community. We found that patients needed comprehensive and personalized care, respect from providers, and self-management support and collaborated care with the community using information technologies advancement. Our findings suggest that a fundamental change in the South Korean healthcare system paradigm is required for successful chronic care, including payment and healthcare delivery systems.

Abstract The association between thyroid function and viral pneumonia has undergone extensive examination, yet the presence of a causal link remains uncertain. The objective of this paper was to employ Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the connections between three thyroid diseases and thyroid hormone indicators with viral pneumonia and COVID-19. We obtained summary statistics datasets from seven genome-wide association studies (GWASs). The primary method used for estimating relationships was inverse-variance weighting (IVW). In addition, we employed weighted median, weighted mode, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO as supplementary analytical tools. Sensitivity analyses encompassed Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, and MR-PRESSO. Our study revealed significant causal relationships between having a genetic predisposition to autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and an increased susceptibility to viral pneumonia (odds ratio [OR]: 1.096; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.022-1.176). Moreover, it demonstrated a heightened susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 (OR for COVID-19 susceptibility, COVID-19 hospitalization, and COVID-19 critical illness, with 95% CIs of 1.016, 1.001-1.032; 1.058, 1.003-1.116; 1.045, 1.010-1.081). However, no statistically significant associations were found between TSH, FT4, subclinical hypo- or hyperthyroidism, and the risk of viral pneumonia incidence, or the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 (all

Abstract The clinical application of Polydioxanone (PDO) threads, conventionally associated with tissue lifting, for volumizing effects in midface rejuvenation. The novel approach involves utilizing PDO volumizing threads to achieve physical augmentation, serving as a "solid filler." The study introduces a more convenient insertion method for PDO volumizing threads, emphasizing ease and efficiency. Clinical cases showcase the effectiveness of volumizing threads in addressing midface concerns, including nasolabial folds and midcheek grooves. The integration of volumizing threads for sagging area support, is explored for natural-looking enhancements. While emphasizing positive outcomes, potential side effects like thread protrusion are discussed, along with solutions for their mitigation. The volumizing thread is presented as a satisfactory procedure for patients averse to fillers or seeking subtle enhancements, with the recommendation of combining it with cog threads for those desiring distinct changes in facial shape. Overall, volumizing thread offers a minimal side-effect alternative for midface rejuvenation.

Abstract Objective: Explore the efficacy of decitabine combined with homoharringtonine + cytarabine + granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (HAG) in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Patients and methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data of 125 patients with AML was done. Of them, 61 patients received a simple HAG treatment (HAG group), and 64 received decitabine combined with an HAG regimen (combined group). Treatment efficacy, immune function before and after the treatment, levels of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and incidence of adverse reactions in the two groups were compared.
Results: The total response rate of the combined group (84.38%) was higher than that of the HAG group (65.63%) (p < 0.05). After the treatment, levels of CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ in both groups increased and were significantly higher in the combined group compared to the HAG group. Levels of CD8+, bFGF and VEGF decreased compared to pre-treatment levels and were significantly lower in the combined group than in the HAG group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the rate of adverse reactions between the two groups (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: Compared to HAG treatment alone, the combination of decitabine and HAG in the treatment of AML is safe, can significantly improve the immune function of the patients, regulate bFGF and VEGF levels, and improve overall treatment efficacy.

Abstract One of the main topics discussed by historians, including those of science, in the late twentieth century is the historical introspection into "modernism," a term based on a teleological view of the world. Abstract As one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides that possess good biological activity, chitosan is extracted from chitin. Its application in the food field is being increasingly valued. However, chitosan extraction is difficult, and its poor solubility limits its application. At present, the extraction methods include the acid-base method, new chemical methods, and biological methods. The extraction rates of chitin/chitosan are 4-55%, 13-14%, and 15-28%, respectively. Different chemical modifications have different effects on chitosan, making it applicable in different fields. This article reviews and compares the extraction and chemical modification methods of chitosan, emphasizing the importance of green extraction methods. Finally, the application prospects of chitosan in the food industry are discussed. This will promote the understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of different extraction methods for chitosan as well as the relationship between modification and application, providing valuable insights for the future development of chitosan.
