Abstract Prisons are a rich source for literary narratives - but what narratives do prison officers themselves construct about working in a prison and their place in it? How do they talk about their daily work with prisoners, justify disciplinary action or assess prison as a form of punishment in general? As ontological narratives which position and give rise to the self, prison officers' narratives are highly relevant, as they shape officers' daily practice, the working of the prison as an organisation and ultimately the way prisoners are treated. Christopher Young combines field notes and interviews from a Swiss prison to reconstruct a typology of prison officers' narratives of the self. One casts the officer as a tragic hero fighting to prevent the decline of punishment, another positions the officer as a lone fighter attempting to overcome the therapy-adverse inertia of the prison system. As the study shows, this inherent tension ultimately contributes to the failure of the attempt to establish a therapeutic detention unit. Prison officers' narratives are viewed as shared narratives which cite and echo legal and media discourses, which the author in turn reconstructs on the basis of a discussion of the history of Swiss penal law and practice and a recent corpus of newspaper articles

Abstract Background: Anal fissure (AF) is the second most common anorectal complaint in healthcare settings. The presentation might be acute or chronic, characterised by severe pain with defaecation that persists for one to two hours. Non-surgical and surgical interventions are available based on the severity and persistence of the fissure.
Objective: The aim of this article is to review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation and management of AF under current guidelines.
Discussion: The aetiology of AF is unclear, although it is commonly associated with local trauma or associated chronic conditions. Acute AF is first treated with conservative therapy, including dietary fibre and sitz baths. Addition of topical nitrates, topical calcium channel blockers or botulinum toxin injection is indicated with failure of conservative treatment or at medical discretion. Surgical options are considered if AF persists despite treatment. Most present as hypertonic, but special consideration is needed for hypotonic or secondary presentations.

Abstract Objectives: To understand the historical context of and relationships between, the characteristics of shots at goal and match outcome in the Australian Football League.
    Design: Observational.
Methods: Descriptive statistics of shots at goal were calculated and compared across 20 seasons. The location, type, and outcome of all shots at goal (n = 43,254), by all teams (2017-19 & 21), were compared with match outcome.
Results: The total number of shots per match and the accuracy of shots haven't changed in two decades. Most teams win by having more shots at goal (Wilcoxon-r effect size 0.63) than their opponent (i.e. "majority strategy") and of these, the number of open shots (0.48) is slightly more important than set shots (0.43), followed by shot accuracy (0.29). However, some teams (14 %) win by taking fewer shots at goal from field locations with a higher likelihood of scoring a goal (i.e. "minority strategy"). Arc angle and shot type can be used to predict the outcome of a shot at goal with 60.3 % classification accuracy. The novel shot-outcome prediction model reported here provides a better opportunity to evaluate goal kicking performance of teams and players, because it accounts for the type and difficulty of the shot.
Conclusions: Teams can evaluate the shot accuracy of their players more fairly, by accounting for shot location using the method reported here. Coaches can compare the two shot strategies identified and implement the one that suits the skill profile of their players and increase their likelihood of winning.

Abstract Social interactions ultimately impact health and fitness in gregarious mammals. However, research focusing on the strength of affiliative interactions has primarily been conducted on female philopatric species. Gorillas provide an interesting counterpoint to previous research as females emigrate multiple times throughout their lives. We compare female-female association strength, duration and consistency in wild mountain (

Abstract This mixed-methods paper examines the experience and effects of the loss of an allotment garden among gardeners in Zurich, Switzerland. The paper explores the subjective experience of garden loss using qualitative material gathered in field conversations with gardeners from an allotment area which was soon to be cleared for construction. In parallel, gardeners from the same area were surveyed before (2018) and after (2019) the clearance, thus constructing a natural experiment to measure effects on gardeners’ social networks, social support and general and mental health. The analysis of the qualitative material shows the (imminent) loss of the garden was a distressing experience for most participants, a result which is strongly supported by the descriptive analysis of several survey questions. Analysis of the quantitative data with ANCOVA models gives support to a negative effect of garden loss on the number of social contacts and on emotional well-being, but not on other factors. The experience of garden loss shows strong parallels to that of loss of a home, but also differs from it in relevant ways. Improved designs of similar natural experiments could lead to more reliable results. These would, however, require researchers to observe planning processes from a very early stage.

Abstract Background: Competency-based training (CBT) programs use procedure-based assessments (PBAs) to evaluate trainees' abilities to perform specific procedures in clinical settings, similar to Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). PBAs help determine trainees' readiness for advanced training levels. However, there is limited evidence on implementing colorectal-specific PBAs in surgical training schemes. This review aims to identify observed and perceived challenges to implementing PBAs in workplace settings.
Methods: A scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute Protocol for Scoping Reviews (JBI-ScR) was conducted. Eligible studies provided evidence on the implementation, feasibility, and challenges of PBAs in colorectal surgery, including various study designs from retrospective to prospective.
Results: Of the 80 screened studies, 75 were excluded based on exclusion criteria. Most of the included studies were conducted in national training institutions in the United Kingdom, assessing 778 colorectal procedures with specific PBAs. The main facilitators of implementing PBAs were structured assessments, focused assessors' training, and electronic forms usage.
Conclusion: This review offers insight into the practicality and feasibility of implementing PBAs in colorectal surgery. Identified challenges include the need for adequate assessor training and the time-consuming nature of the assessment. These findings could improve PBA implementation in colorectal surgery and enhance surgical education quality. However, the limited number of studies and existing literature heterogeneity call for more research to identify other gaps.
