    Abstract Network science provides a powerful tool for unraveling the complexities of social, technological and biological systems. Constructing networks using wave phenomena is also of great interest in devising advanced hardware for machine learning, as shown in optical neural networks. Although most wave-based networks have employed static network models, the impact of evolving models in network science provides strong motivation to apply dynamical network modeling to wave physics. Here the concept of evolving scattering networks for scattering phenomena is developed. The network is defined by links, node degrees and their evolution processes modeling multi-particle interferences, which directly determine scattering from disordered materials. I demonstrate the concept by examining network-based material classification, microstructure screening and preferential attachment in evolutions, which are applied to stealthy hyperuniformity. The results enable independent control of scattering from different length scales, revealing superdense material phases in short-range order. The proposed concept provides a bridge between wave physics and network science to resolve multiscale material complexities and open-system material design.

    Abstract This study aimed to investigate the differences in clinical features and routine peripheral blood testing between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and influenza B infection. Patients with COVID-19 and influenza B admitted to our fever clinic from January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2022 were recruited. A total of 607 patients were included (301 with COVID-19 infection and 306 with influenza B infection). The results of a statistical analysis showed that 1) patients with COVID-19 infection were older and had a lower temperature and shorter duration from fever onset to clinic visit than patients with influenza B infection; 2) apart from fever, viral infection symptoms appeared to be more common in patients with influenza B infection than in patients with COVID-19 infection, including sore throat, cough, muscle aches, weeping, headache, fatigue, and diarrhea (P < 0.001); and 3) compared with patients with influenza B infection, patients with COVID-19 infection had higher numbers of white blood cells and neutrophils but lower numbers of red blood cells and lymphocytes (P < 0.001). In summary, several important differences were identified between COVID-19 and influenza B, which may help to guide clinicians in their initial diagnosis of these two respiratory viral infections.

    Abstract Humans now understand the world as multilevel in nature. For example, societies emerge from individuals, and general experiences of life consist of specific aspects and momentary episodes. A critical feature of multilevel phenomena is between-level incongruences. Applied to human positivity, this means that positive higher-level units are not simply composed of positive lower-level units and that what is good for lower-level units may not be good for higher-level units (and vice versa). For example, killjoys may improve societal well-being, personal achievement may require giving up on certain goals, and a happy life may not arise from simply happy moments. In this article, I provide examples (organized by the positive outcome of well-being and performance and by the social, structural, and temporal forms of multilevel phenomena) to show that such between-level incongruences are ubiquitous. Next, I analyze a few mechanisms that may govern the diverse instantiations of between-level incongruences in positivity. Finally, I discuss implications of this perspective, such as why positivity claims should always qualify their level of analysis; how psychological science may benefit from a multilevel, dynamical, and computational perspective; and how to improve human positivity in light of between-level incongruences.

    Abstract The spindle and kinetochore-associated complex is composed of three members: SKA1, SKA2, and SKA3. It is necessary for stabilizing spindle microtubules attaching to kinetochore (KT) in the middle stage of mitosis. The SKA complex is associated with poor prognosis in several human cancers. However, the role of SKA complex in rare malignant diseases, such as gliomas, has not been fully investigated. We investigated several databases, including Oncomine, UALCAN, and cBioPortal to explore the expression profile and prognostic significance of SKA complex in patients with gliomas. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome pathways were used to analyze the potential enriched pathways. The genes co-expressed with SKA complex were identified and used for developing a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network using the STRING database. We found a significant overexpression of the mRNA levels of SKA1, SKA2, and SKA3 in patients with glioma patients. Higher expression of SKA1 and SKA3, but not SKA2, was significantly correlated with shorter overall survival of patients with glioma. In glioma, SKA complex was found to be involved in nuclear division, chromosome segregation, and DNA replication. The results of PPI network identified 10 hub genes (CCNB2, UBE2C, BUB1B, TPX2, CCNA2, CCNB1, MELK, TOP2A, PBK, and KIF11), all of which were overexpressed and negatively associated with prognosis of patients with glioma. In conclusion, our study sheds new insights into the biological role and prognostic significance of SKA complex in glioma.
