Abstract In Chinese languages, tones are used to express the lexical meaning of words. It is therefore important to analyze the role of lexical tone in Chinese sentence recognition accuracy. There is a lack of research on the role of Cantonese lexical tones in sentence recognition accuracy. Therefore, this study examined the contribution of lexical tone information to Cantonese sentence recognition accuracy and its cognitive correlates in adults with normal hearing (NH). A text-to-speech synthesis engine was used to synthesize Cantonese daily-use sentences with each word carrying an original or a flat lexical tone, which were then presented to 97 participants in quiet, in speech-shaped noise (SSN), and in two-talker babble (TTB) noise conditions. Both target sentences and noises were presented at 65 dB binaurally via insert headphones. It was found that listeners with NH can almost perfectly recognize a daily-use Cantonese sentence with mismatched lexical tone information in quiet, while their sentence recognition decreases substantially in noise. The same finding was reported for Mandarin, which has a relatively simple tonal system, suggesting that the current results may be applicable to other tonal languages. In addition, working memory (WM) was significantly related to decline in sentence recognition score in the TTB but not in the SSN, when the lexical tones were mismatched. This finding can be explained using the Ease of Language Understanding model and suggests that those with higher WM are less likely to be affected by the degraded lexical information for perceiving daily-use sentences in the TTB.

Abstract The repeated renaming of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and ensuing debates (2007–2009), reveal the multiple presences of collective memory and the ongoing ideological struggles between the Kuomintang and the Democratic Progressive Party in contemporary Taiwan. This paper examines the dynamic and intertwined relationships between collective memories and competing histories which are exposed by the renaming and its aftermath. An emphasis on forgetting as well as ‘transcending the past(s)’ (chaoyue guochu) have become common strategies that function to incorporate the two contradictory versions of national history in contemporary Taiwan—implying not only amnesia about the other side’s past but also the suppression of diverse voices. Moreover, both parties compete to narrate a ‘national history’ from victimized perspectives, resulting in the adoption of different periods of Taiwan’s past to support their political assertions. Keywords: Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, collective memory, national history

Abstract This study aims to explore professors’ job satisfaction and the factors that influence their satisfaction. Professors whose main duties were instruction, research, service, and advising (i.e., four types of responsibilities) were invited to participate in the study; the participants of the study ( n = 117) completed a questionnaire survey, and interviews ( n = 50) were also conducted to investigate their job perceptions. The study proposed a model that includes a second-order hierarchy of professors’ job satisfaction comprising four duties (i.e., instruction, research, service, and advising) and factors that influence job satisfaction. The results revealed that the participating professors tended to be moderately satisfied with their jobs and that the job satisfaction of full professors was greater than that of assistant professors. The order of four key duties that influenced professors’ overall job satisfaction were service, instruction, advising, and research. Furthermore, consistent with motivator-hygiene theory, the “university work environment” and the “nature of academic job” were the two factors that significantly influenced the job satisfaction of the participants. Of these two factors, the “university work environment” had a greater influence in predicting the participants’ job satisfaction, especially for higher-ranked professors. The study findings suggest that universities can increase the job satisfaction of professors by enhancing their professional development activities; improving their work environment, equipment, and support; providing more regulatory flexibility; and implementing teacher grievance mechanisms and reward systems that meet the needs of professors.

Abstract The research aims to study the application of remote Femto Second (FS) technology in black silicon material preparation and optical devices. Based on the principle and characteristic research of FS technology, the interaction between FS and silicon is adopted to propose a scheme for preparing black silicon material through experiments. Moreover, the experimental parameters are optimized. Then, the scheme of using the FS for etching polymer optical power splitter as a new technical means is proposed. In addition, while ensuring processing accuracy, the appropriate process parameters of laser etching photoresist are obtained. The results show that the performance of black silicon prepared with SF6 as the background gas is greatly improved in the 400-2200nm range. However, the performance of black silicon samples with the two-layer structure etched at different laser energy densities has little difference. Black silicon with a Se+Si two-layer film structure has the best optical absorption performance in the infrared range of 1100nm-2200nm. Besides, the optical absorption rate is the highest when the laser scanning rate is 0.5mm/s. In the band of >1100nm, when the maximum laser energy density is 6.5kJ/m2, the overall absorption of the etched sample is the worst. The absorption rate is the best when the laser energy density is 3.9kJ/m2. It suggests that the proper parameter selection greatly impacts the quality of the final laser-etched sample.

Abstract The building industry significantly contributes to global warming, driving the demand for sustainable construction and green buildings. However, barriers like cost concerns and limited knowledge persist. Previous studies have used multi-objective optimization (MOO) to minimize life cycle cost and environmental impact, often emphasizing energy efficiency. In equatorial climates, unique factors like material selection must be considered. This study assesses the cost-effectiveness of sustainable materials, focusing on envelope materials in Ecuador. The case study is a single-family house in the equatorial climate, optimized using Building Information Modeling (BIM), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). In this study, a MOO process using the weighted sum approach (WSA) identifies sustainable house designs. The sustainable houses achieve a 98% decrease in Ozone Depletion Potential, a 75% reduction in Global Warming Potential, and a 45% drop in Primary Energy Demand, although they still incur a 30% increased cost. The results offer a foundation for cost-effective, eco-friendly housing solutions. Bamboo emerges as a promising material with local acceptance. This research highlights the significance of material selection in sustainable construction and provides a replicable approach for diverse settings. It aims to promote sustainable housing solutions in Ecuador and beyond.

Abstract A sufficiently stable noncovalent association complex between a covalent inhibitor and its protein target is regarded as a prerequisite for the formation of a covalent complex. As this transient form can hardly be assessed experimentally, computational modeling is required to probe the suitability of a given ligand at this particular stage. To investigate which criteria should be fulfilled by suitable candidates in a molecular dynamics (MD) assessment, a systematic study was conducted with 20 complexes of cathepsin K, a papain-like cysteine protease of pharmaceutical relevance. The covalent inhibitors in these complexes were converted to their pre-reaction states, and the resulting noncovalent complexes were subjected to MD simulations. The critical distance between the electrophilic and nucleophilic reaction partners was monitored as a potential parameter to assess the suitability for covalent bond formation. Across various warhead types, a distance between 3.6 and 4.0 Å, comparable to the sum of the generalized Born radii of carbon and sulfur, was found to be stably maintained under appropriate conditions. The protonation state of the catalytic dyad and the resulting solvation pattern dramatically affected the noncovalent binding mode and the distance of the warhead to the active site. For several complexes, fluctuations in the orientation of the warhead were observed due to torsional rotations in adjacent bonds. This observation helped to explain the gradual transitions from noncovalent to covalent complexes observed in the crystal structures of three closely related nitrile-based inhibitors. According to comparative simulations conducted for a set of 13 cathepsin S complexes, the overall findings of the study appear to be transferable to related cysteine proteases as targets of covalent inhibitors.

Abstract Abstract Zinc‐bromine batteries (ZBBs) have recently gained significant attention as inexpensive and safer alternatives to potentially flammable lithium‐ion batteries. Zn metal is relatively stable in aqueous electrolytes, making ZBBs safer and easier to handle. However, Zn metal anodes are still affected by several issues, including dendrite growth, Zn dissolution, and the crossover of Br species from cathodes to corrode anodes, resulting in self‐discharge and fast performance fading. Similarly, Br2 undergoes sluggish redox reactions on cathodes, which brings several issues such as poor reaction kinetics, the highly corrosive nature of Br species leading to corrosion of separators and poisoning of anodes, and the volatile nature of Br species causing increased internal pressures, etc. These issues are compounded in flowless ZBB configuration as no fresh electrolyte is available to provide extra/fresh reaction species. In this review, the factors controlling the performance of ZBBs in flow and flowless configurations are thoroughly reviewed, along with the status of ZBBs in the commercial sector. The review also summarizes various novel methodologies to mitigate these challenges and presents research areas for future studies. In summary, this review will offer a perspective on the historical evolution, recent advancements, and prospects of ZBBs.

Abstract A 45-year-old male visited our hospital for a medical examination without any clinical complaints. The patient had an gastroscopy, which revealed a 30mm*30mm hemispherical submucosal tumor arising from the lesser curvature of the gastric body , suggesting a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) as a preoperative diagnosis;Endoscopic resection was determined to be the best choice and the patient underwent a endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic purse-string suture. Except for a slight low fever, the patient was well recovered and was discharged on his 7th post-operation. Pathological analysis and immunohistochemical staining showed fascicular growth of neoplastic Schwann cells and confirmed the diagnosis of gastric schwannoma through high positivity for S-100 protein.

Abstract Background: Various biologic agents targeting specific molecules present new treatment options for various tumors. Acneiform eruption is a very common skin reaction to these agents. Although not life-threatening, acneiform eruption can affect patients' emotional and social lives. In very exceptional cases, it can lead to cancer therapy interruption.
Aims: The aim of this study was to review the incidence rate, clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, and current management of acneiform eruption induced by molecularly targeted agents.
Methods: This review was carried out through PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane searching terms 'acneiform eruption', 'papulopustular eruption' or 'acne-like rash' and 'skin toxicity', 'cutaneous toxicity', 'skin reactions', 'dermatological toxicities', 'target therapy,' or 'drug therapy'.
Results: Of the 73 articles matched our search terms, 61 were original articles and 12 were case reports or case series. Acneiform eruption is most commonly observed in patients treated with epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors and mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors. Typical lesions consist of erythematous papules and pustules without comedones, accompanying with burning, pruritus, or xerosis. The pathogenesis involves inflammation and abnormalities of the follicular epithelium, where a disorder in EGFR signaling plays a key role. The treatment of acneiform eruption depends on the severity of the rash.
Conclusions: Early recognition and effective management of this cutaneous adverse reaction can prevent unnecessary reduction and discontinuation of drug use and improve patient survival and quality of life. Close collaboration between oncologists and dermatologists is important to optimize therapy and improve patient survival.
