    Abstract Climate change is transforming winter environmental conditions rapidly. Shifts in snow regimes and freeze/thaw cycles that are unique to the harsh winter season can strongly influence ecological processes and biodiversity patterns of mammals and birds. However, the role of the winter environment in structuring a species richness pattern is generally downplayed, especially in temperate regions. Here we developed a suite of winter habitat indices at 500 m spatial resolution by fusing MODIS snow products and NASA MEaSUREs daily freeze/thaw records from passive microwave sensors and tested how these indices could improve the explanation of species richness patterns across China. We found that the winter habitat indices provided unique and mutually complementary environmental information compared to the commonly used Dynamic Habitat Indices (DHIs). Winter habitat indices significantly increased the explanatory power for species richness of all mammal and bird groups. Particularly, winter habitat indices contributed more to the explanation of bird species than mammals. Regarding the independent contribution, winter season length made the largest contributions to the explained variance of winter birds (30%), resident birds (27%), and mammals (18%), while the frequency of snow-free frozen ground contributed the most to the explanation of species richness for summer birds (23%). Our research provides new insights into the interpretation of broad-scale species diversity, which has great implications for biodiversity assessment and conservation.

    Abstract In this paper, a molecular model of cellulose amorphous region-water molecule was developed using Materials Studio software by applying the molecular dynamics method. The effect of low temperature on the properties of the lignocellulosic amorphous region, the main component of wood, was investigated in an attempt to explain the macroscopic property changes from a microscopic perspective and to provide a theoretical basis for the safe use of wood and wood products in low-temperature environments and other related areas of research. Dynamic simulations were carried out at 20 °C, 0 °C, −30 °C, −70 °C, −110 °C and −150 °C for the NPT combinations to obtain the energy, volume, density, and hydrogen bonding change trends of their models, respectively. The changes in the microstructure of the water molecule–cellulose amorphous region model were analyzed, and the mechanical properties were calculated. The results showed that the interaction between the amorphous cellulose region and water molecules was enhanced as the temperature decreased, the density of the models increased, and the volume decreased. The number of total hydrogen bonds and the number of hydrogen bonds between water molecule–cellulose chains increased for each model, and the decrease in temperature made the cellulose molecular activities weaker. The values of G , E , and K increased with the decrease in temperature, and K / G decreased with the decrease in temperature. It shows that the decrease in temperature is beneficial to enhance the mechanical properties of the amorphous region of cellulose and increases the stiffness of the material. However, the toughness and plasticity decrease when the temperature is too low.

    Abstract Oral cancer is a common malignancy worldwide, accounting for 1.9% to 3.5% of all malignant tumors. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), as one of the most important cytokines, is found to play complex and crucial roles in oral cancers. It may act in a pro-tumorigenic and tumor-suppressive manner; activities of the former include cell cycle progression inhibition, tumor microenvironment preparation, apoptosis promotion, stimulation of cancer cell invasion and metastasis, and suppression of immune surveillance. However, the triggering mechanisms of these distinct actions remain unclear. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of TGF-β signal transduction, focusing on oral squamous cell and salivary adenoid systemic carcinomas as well as keratocystic odontogenic tumors. Both the supporting and contrary evidence of the roles of TGF-β is discussed. Importantly, the TGF-β pathway has been the target of new drugs developed in the past decade, some having demonstrated promising therapeutic effects in clinical trials. Therefore, the achievements of TGF-β pathway-based therapeutics and their challenges are also assessed. The summarization and discussion of the updated knowledge of TGF-β signaling pathways will provide insight into the design of new strategies for oral cancer treatment, leading to an improvement in oral cancer outcomes.

    Abstract Due to the impact of COVID-19 and other factors, SMEs are increasingly facing the contradiction of financing constraints. In order to explore feasible ways to ease the financing constraints of SMEs, we further incorporate digital inclusive finance into the analytical framework of financing constraints of SMEs, and test the causal relationship between them by using models such as two-way fixed effects model and moderated intermediary effect model. We find that digital inclusive finance can effectively alleviate financing constraints of SMEs, and this phenomenon is particularly significant in private enterprises and family enterprises. In addition, the mitigation effect of digital financial inclusion is more like icing on the cake, and it cannot provide practical assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises with poor business conditions. Further research also finds that commercial credit seems to be an effective channel for digital financial inclusion to alleviate financing constraints of SMEs, but corporate leverage also plays an important role in this process, playing a negative moderating role. In general, our study strengthens the effectiveness of digital inclusive finance in alleviating financing constraints of SMEs, at the same time, confirming the existence of commercial credit channels and the moderating effect of enterprises’ lever ratio and providing a feasible direction for alleviating financing constraints of enterprises.

    Abstract Bike share engages riders in physical activity, beneficial to health. In addition, it promotes green mobility and contributes to carbon neutrality. An understanding of the association between bike share usage and the built environment is essential for system operation/management and urban/transportation planning. Limited reviews of the existing literature exist now. Therefore, we review previous studies to decipher the complex relationship between bike share usage and the built environment. We focus on a few built environment dimensions (e.g., land use, transportation system, and urban design) and find that many attributes affect bike share usage differently across mobility cultures, between docked and dockless bike share, and between arrival and departure usage patterns. The effects of several attributes (e.g., proximity to a park or university and metro station density) on bike share usage also vary between weekdays and weekends and across trip purposes. The findings of this paper advance knowledge on the connection between bike share usage and the built environment.

    Abstract The southern coast of the Laizhou Bay is considered as one of important areas for the origin and development of sea salt production in Eastern China. Archaeologists have collected rich materials to better understand history of salt production in the region, but how environmental change influences early salt production is still unknown. Here we collected samples at the Shuangwangcheng (SWC) site in the southern plain of Laizhou Bay. We conducted grain size, mollusk and foraminifera analysis to examine the evolution of sedimentary environment and restored the human adaptions to environmental change. The results showed that the sedimentary environment of study area was lower tidal flat during 6400~5900 yr BP as indicated by coarse and well sorted grain size, high abundance of foraminifera, and the Ammonia beccarii vars. - Quinqueloculina akneriana foraminifera assemblage. Sedimentary environment changed from intertidal to supratidal flat with decreasing abundance of foraminifera and finer upward grain size at 5900~ 4300 yr BP. After 4300 yr BP, this area was less affected by seawater, which could be reflected by the appearance of freshwater mollusk and rarely discovered foraminifera. Our retrieved environment changes were closely related with ancient human activities. The Holocene transgression constrained the Dawenkou cultural sites within the inland areas with higher altitude. The exposed coast lowlands after sea retreat were initially not suitable for human survival except sporadic salt production sites of the Longshan culture. These conditions were improved during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties when humans widely used the particular natural resources of underground brine for salt production, and then a large number of salt production sites appeared, which made this region develop into an important origin center of salt production.     Abstract The interdecadal change of the BOBSM–SCSSM relationship around the late 1970s is investigated in this paper. We found that the correlation between the BOBSM and SCSSM is 0.22 in 1958–1979, while it is 0.66 in 1980–2018. Further analyses showed that the strength of the South Asian High (SAH) at upper troposphere circulation experiences an interdecadal enhancement around the late 1970s; meanwhile its meridional shift exhibits a wider range in the second subperiod. Both the interdecadal change of the strength and meridional shift of the SAH contribute to a closer relationship of the BOBSM and SCSSM through modulating the divergent field at upper troposphere. As for the external forcing, the basin warming of the Indian Ocean after the late 1970s may serve as a relatively primary factor, which could induce a consistent background flow that may favor a closer BOBSM–SCSSM relationship in the second period. It is noted that the Indian Ocean warming is related to high pressure anomaly widely lying to the south of 20°N at upper troposphere, accompanied by the low pressure anomaly center to the north of 20°N. And this kind of upper-level circulation may result in strong westerly anomaly at the domain where the pressure gradient is large and then modulate the onset of the BOBSM and SCSSM in 1980–2018 through changing the upper-level divergent field. Besides, the low troposphere circulation associated with Indian Ocean warming is featured by the zonal-elongated high pressure anomaly spanning from the BOB and SCS to the northwest Pacific. The above coupling of the upper and lower troposphere, as a larger-scale consistent background flow controls the BOB and SCS, can modulate the interannual variation of the BOBSM and SCSSM synchronously and contributes to the closer relationship of the BOBSM and SCSSM in the second subperiod.

    Abstract Regional collaboration and the division of economic zones have been widely discussed for sustainable development. This paper aims at building a framework for analyzing the provincial division of economic zone (DEZ) via considering spatial interaction among regions based on the improved gravity model and clustering approaches. The proposed framework of province DEZ is applied in the case study of Hunan Province, China. The results reveal that Chenzhou city in the south of Hunan Province is always excluded from the DEZ due to its larger external gravity from other cities in neighboring provinces. It also shows that the city components of economic zones (EZs) have experienced a fluctuation at a higher degree from 2002 to 2006 to 2009 while it reached to a stable phase in 2013. Furthermore, cross-provincial regional integration and the highway construction have a significant impact on the change of city components of EZ. The findings are of great potential in regional planning that should be incorporated to the toolkit of regional policy and sustainable development for local governments.

    Abstract The molecular mechanism of osteosarcoma (OS) based on protein-coding genes has largely been studied in the past decades. However, much remains to be explored when it comes to the role that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play in the pathogenesis and progression of OS and how they are associated with OS metastasis. In the present study, we collected RNA-seq-based gene expression data of 82 OS samples from the Therapeutically Applicable Research To Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) database, along with their clinical information. We found that 50 lncRNAs were significantly associated with patients’ survival by univariable Cox regression model. Moreover, we built multivariable Cox regression model based on 7 lncRNAs and successfully stratified patients into two risk groups, which exhibited significantly different prognostic outcomes. Significantly enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways detected by differential expression analysis on DEGs between the two groups with different prognostic outcomes were both immune-related, indicating that such GO terms and pathways are critical for OS survival. Among the seven lncRNA signatures, AC011442.1 was predicted to act as an oncogenic driver in OS by correlation analysis of copy number alteration (CNA) and lncRNA expression, and it was predicted to regulate AMPK and hedgehog signaling pathways. In summary, the identification of novel prognostic lncRNAs in OS could not only improved our understanding of the lncRNAs involved in OS tumorigenesis or progression but also assist the diagnosis and development of molecularly targeted therapies for OS, which in turn benefit patients’ survival.

    Abstract Like many other transit modes, the metro provides stop-to-stop services rather than door-to-door services, so its use undeniably involves first- and last-mile issues. Understanding the determinants of the first- and last-mile mode choice is essential. Existing literature, however, mostly overlooks the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes toward the mode. To this end, based on a face-to-face questionnaire survey in Shenzhen, China, this study uses the two-sample t-test to confirm the systematic differences in traffic safety perception and attitudes between different subgroups and develops a series of multinomial logistic (MNL) models to identify the determinants of first- and last-mile mode choice for metro commuters. The results of this study show that: (1) Walking is the most frequently used travel mode, followed by dockless bike-sharing (DBS) and buses; (2) Variances in traffic safety perception and attitude exist across gender and location; (3) Vehicle-related crash risks discourage metro commuters from walking to/from the metro station but encourage them to use DBS and buses as feeder modes; (4) DBS–metro integration is encouraged by the attitude that DBS is quicker than buses and walking, and positive attitudes toward the bus and DBS availability are decisive for the bus–metro and DBS–metro integration, respectively; and (5) Substantial differences exist in the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes for access and egress trips. This study provides a valuable reference for metro commuters’ first- and last-mile travel mode choice, contributing to developing a sustainable urban transport system.
