Abstract To achieve a preferable compatibility between liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and cable main insulation in a cable accessory, we developed SiC/LSR nanocomposites with a significantly higher conductivity nonlinearity than pure LSR, whilst representing a notable improvement in space charge characteristics. Space charge distributions in polarization/depolarization processes and surface potentials of SiC/LSR composites are analyzed to elucidate the percolation conductance and charge trapping mechanisms accounting for nonlinear conductivity and space charge suppression. It is verified that SiC/LSR composites with SiC content higher than 10 wt% represent an evident nonlinearity of electric conductivity as a function of the electric field strength. Space charge accumulations can be inhibited by filling SiC nanoparticles into LSR, as illustrated in both dielectric polarization and depolarization processes. Energy level and density of shallow traps increase significantly with SiC content, which accounts for expediting carrier hopping transport and surface charge decay. Finite-element multiphysics simulations demonstrate that nonlinear conductivity acquired by 20 wt% SiC/LSR nanocomposite could efficiently homogenize an electric field distributed in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable joints. Nonlinear conductivities and space charge characteristics of SiC/LSR composites discussed in this paper suggest a feasible modification strategy to improve insulation performances of direct current (DC) cable accessories.

Abstract The longitudinal structure in the altitude of the Sporadic E (Es) was investigated for the first time based on the S4 index provided by the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) in low latitudes. The longitudinal structure is identified as a symmetrically located wavenumber-4 (WN4) pattern within 30°S–30°N. The WN4 occurs primarily during the daytime at the June solstice and equinoxes, with the largest amplitude at the September equinox and the smallest one at the March equinox. It moves eastward with a speed of ~90°/day. The strongest WN4 appears within 10–20°N and 5–15°S in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, respectively. At the June solstice and the September equinox, the WN4 is stronger in the Northern hemisphere than in the Southern hemisphere, while the situation is reversed at the March equinox. The altitude distribution of the convergence null in the diurnal eastward non-migrating tide with zonal wavenumber-3 (DE3) for the zonal wind is similar to that of the WN4. This and other similar features, such as the seasonal variation, eastward speed, and the symmetrical locations, support the dominant role of the DE3 tide for the formation of the WN4 structure.

Abstract AbstractGlocalization, adapting global practices to local contexts, has become increasingly important in scientific research. However, the impact of global and local collaboration networks on glocalization remains underexplored. In this study, we conduct a bibliometric analysis to examine publications in the field of glocalization recorded in the Scopus database from 1993–2023. Using data from 12,046 publications, we identify key themes, publication trends, and methodological designs related to glocalization and collaboration networks. We then develop a theoretical model incorporating these factors to better understand the relationship between global and local collaboration networks and glocalization. This unprecedented study suggests that global and local collaboration networks are important in promoting glocalization in scientific research. We discuss the implications of our findings for future research and practitioners seeking to promote glocalization in their scientific endeavors.

Abstract This study examines the influence of negative Feng-shui features on the prices of foreclosures (the houses subject to court-enforced auction) in Taiwan using the Google Street View function. The research objectives are threefold. Firstly, the study aims to compare whether foreclosed houses with negative Feng-shui features have longer auction times and higher discount rates compared to those without such features. Secondly, it seeks to explore the impact of negative Feng-shui features on investors in the foreclosed house market. Lastly, the study aims to assess the varying degrees of influence of different negative Feng-shui features on foreclosure prices. The findings of this study indicate that in the metropolitan area of Taiwan, foreclosures with more negative Feng-shui features tend to have longer auction times and higher discount rates compared to those without such features. Negative Feng-shui features may cause delays in investor bidding. Among the 12 negative Feng-shui features analyzed, only the presence of “facing-temple” is found to have a negative effect on foreclosure prices. This suggests that foreclosures with the “facing-temple” feature tend to have lower prices and potentially higher discount rates. The other 11 negative Feng-shui features do not have significant effects on auction pricing. This study discovered that the “facing-temple” was a significant negative Feng-shui feature in foreclosures in Taiwan against the traditional perspective. And it provides investors’ concerns toward foreclosures and their tendency in prices of foreclosures in Taiwan.

Abstract Interleukins (ILs) are a subgroup of secreted cytokines, which are molecules involved in the intercellular regulation of the immune system. In this study, 12 IL homologs were cloned and functionally identified from obscure puffer Takifugu obscurus, and they were termed as ToIL-1β, ToIL-1, ToIL-6, ToIL-10, ToIL-11, ToIL-12, ToIL-17, ToIL-18, ToIL-20, ToIL-24, ToIL-27, and ToIL-34. Multiple alignment results showed that except for ToIL-24 and ToIL-27, other deduced ToIL proteins shared typical characteristics and structure with other known fish ILs. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 12 ToILs were evolutionarily closely related to their counterparts in other selected vertebrates. Tissue distribution assay demonstrated that the mRNA transcripts of most ToIL genes were constitutively expressed in all tissues examined, with relatively high expression in immune tissues. Following Vibrio harveyi and Staphylococcus aureus infection, the expression levels of 12 ToILs in the spleen and liver were significantly upregulated, and their response over time varied. Taken together, these data were discussed accordingly with the ToIL expression and the immune response under the different situations tested. The results suggest that the 12 ToIL genes are involved in the antibacterial immune response in T. obscurus.

Abstract An open-source precision pressure pump system and control software is presented, primarily designed for the experimental microfluidics community, although others may find additional uses for this precision pressure source. This mechatronic system is coined ‘µPump,’ and its performance rivals that of commercially available systems, at a fraction of the cost. The pressure accuracy, stability, and resolution are 0.09%, 0.02%, and 0.02% of the full span, respectively. The settling time to reach 2 bar from zero and stabilize is less than 2 s. Material for building a four-channel µPump (approx. $3000 USD) or an eight-channel µPump (approx. $5000 USD) is approximately a quarter, or a third of the cost of buying a high-end commercial system, respectively. The design rationale is presented, together with documented design details and software, so that the system may be replicated or customized to particular applications. µPump can be used for two-phase droplet microfluidics, single-phase microfluidics, gaseous flow microfluidics and any other applications requiring precise fluid handling. µPump provides researchers, students, and startups with a cost-effective solution for precise fluid control.

Abstract Background: This study aimed to reveal the efficacy of the artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted dental age (DA) assessment in identifying the characteristics of growth delay (GD) in children. Methods: The panoramic films matching the inclusion criteria were collected for the AI model training to establish the population-based DA standard. Subsequently, the DA of the validation dataset of the healthy children and the images of the GD children were assessed by both the conventional methods and the AI-assisted standards. The efficacy of all the studied modalities was compared by the paired sample t -test. Results: The AI-assisted standards can provide much more accurate chronological age (CA) predictions with mean errors of less than 0.05 years, while the traditional methods presented overestimated results in both genders. For the GD children, the convolutional neural network (CNN) revealed the delayed DA in GD children of both genders, while the machine learning models presented so only in the GD boys. Conclusion: The AI-assisted DA assessments help overcome the long-standing populational limitation observed in traditional methods. The image feature extraction of the CNN models provided the best efficacy to reveal the nature of delayed DA in GD children of both genders.

Abstract Immunotherapy is gradually emerging in the field of tumor treatment. However, because of the complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME), some patients cannot benefit from immunotherapy. Therefore, we comprehensively analyzed the TME and gene mutations of ccRCC to identify a comprehensive index that could more accurately guide the immunotherapy of patients with ccRCC. We divided ccRCC patients into two groups based on immune infiltration activity. Next, we investigated the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and constructed a prognostic immune score using univariate Cox regression analysis, unsupervised cluster analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA) and validated its predictive power in both internal and total sets. Subsequently, the gene mutations in the groups were investigated, and patients suitable for immunotherapy were selected in combination with the immune score. The prognosis of the immune score-low group was significantly worse than that of the immune score-high group. The patients with BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) mutation had a poor prognosis. Thus, this study indicated that establishing an immune score model combined with BAP1 mutation can better predict the prognosis of patients, screen suitable ccRCC patients for immunotherapy, and select more appropriate drug combinations.

Abstract BackgroundChemoresistance is the major cause of death in advanced prostate cancer (PCa), especially in metastatic PCa (mPCa). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the chemoresistance of PCa remain unclear. Understanding the reason behind the drug resistance would be helpful in developing new treatment approaches.MethodsThe Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus datasets, and clinical samples were used to examine the correlation between growth arrest and DNA damage-inducible 45 beta (GADD45B) with clinical characteristics and prognosis. Lentiviral transfection was used to construct GADD45B overexpression cell lines. Hypoxic incubator, low serum medium, or docetaxel was used to build environmental stress model or chemotherapy cell model. The MTS assay and colony formation assay were used to test cell viability. Apoptosis and cell cycle were detected by flow cytometry. The RNA and protein levels of related biomarkers were tested by Western blotting and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Bioinformatics analysis after RNA sequencing was performed to identify the possible mechanism of how GADD45B regulates chemotherapy resistance.ResultsGADD45B was related to distant metastasis but not to Gleason score, prostate-specific antigen level, T stage, or lymph node metastasis and indicated a good prognosis. The level of GADD45B increased significantly in PCa cells that faced environmental stress. It was found that a high level of GADD45B significantly enhanced the chemosensitivity. Furthermore, high GADD45B promoted cell apoptosis via mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway.ConclusionGADD45B promoted chemosensitivity of prostate cancer through MAPK pathway. GADD45B could serve as a diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for mPCa or chemotherapy-resistant patients.

Abstract BACKGROUND:The present study aims to investigate the gene expression changes in papillary renal cell carcinoma(pRCC) and screen several genes and associated pathways of papillary renal cell carcinoma progression. METHODS:The papillary renal cell carcinoma RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data set was downloaded from TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas). We identified the differentially expressed mRNAs between cancer and normal tissues and performed annotation of differentially expressed mRNAs to figure out the functions and pathways they were enriched in. Then, we constructed a risk score that relied on the 5-mRNA. The optimal value for the patients'classification risk level was identified by ROC analysis. The relationship between mRNA expression and prognosis of papillary renal cell carcinoma was evaluated by univariate Cox regression model. The 5-mRNA based risk score was validated in both complete set and testing set. RESULT:In general, the 5-mRNA (CCNB2, IGF2BP3, KIF18A, PTTG1, and BUB1) were identified and validated, which can predict papillary renal cell carcinoma patient survival. This study revealed the 5-mRNA expression profile and the potential function of a single mRNA as a prognostic target for papillary renal cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION:In addition, these findings may have significant implications for potential treatments options and prognosis for patients with papillary renal cell carcinoma.
