Abstract Three maize cultivars with different endosperm types (flint, semiflint, and dent maize cultivars) were studied to characterize vitreous endosperm flour properties compared with those of floury endosperm flour from the same maize kernels. Vitreous endosperm flour had higher amylose and protein contents, and lower starch content, higher percentage of large starch granule, bigger mean diameter of starch granule, higher iodine capacity, higher trough viscosity and final viscosity and setback, lower swelling power, lower peak viscosity and breakdown, and higher peak time and pasting temperature than the counterpart floury endosperm flour. X‐ray diffraction analysis indicated typical A‐pattern for starches of vitreous and floury endosperm flours. Floury endosperm flour showed the presence of greater crystallinity and higher enthalpy change (∆Hgel) than vitreous endosperm flour for three cultivars. Retrogradation enthalpy (∆Hret) and retrogradation percentage (R) of vitreous and floury endosperm flours ranged from 6.23 to 7.92 J/g and 52.72% to 73.62%, and from 5.46 to 6.45 J/g and 45.70% to 56.58%, respectively. In conclusion, vitreous and floury endosperm flours had significantly different physicochemical properties. Results of this study provide a foundation for better and valid utilization of different endosperm section during grain processing.

Abstract The efficacy of Sporidiobolus pararoseus Y16 in controlling postharvest blue mold caused by Penicillium expansum on apples and the defense response involved were evaluated. The results suggested that the decay incidence of blue mold of apples treated by S. pararoseus Y16 was significantly reduced compared with the control. In vitro testing indicated that germination of spores and germ tube length of P. expansum were markedly inhibited by S. pararoseus Y16. Meanwhile, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), and catalase (CAT) activities and several pathogenesis-related (PR) gene expression levels (including PR3, PR4, PR5, and PR9) were determined. In apples, the activities of PPO, POD, CAT, and PAL were significantly induced by S. pararoseus Y16 treatment compared with the control fruits. The relative expression levels of PR3 and PR4 were significantly induced at 4 and 6 d, while PR5 was significantly induced at 4 and 6 d and PR9 was significantly induced at 4 d. Therefore, the reduction in apple fruit decay by S. pararoseus Y16 treatment could be related to the increased activities of related enzymes and proteins involved in the defense against pathogens, which suggest that S. pararoseus Y16 is a potential antagonistic yeast.

Abstract In this study, lipid content of live Eriocheir sinensis has been quickly and accurately determined by low‐field 1H Nuclear magnetic resonance (LF ‐1H NMR ). The experimental parameters of LF ‐1H NMR have been optimized and the validity of the established standard method has been confirmed with traditional Soxhlet extraction method. Results show that the lipid signal intensity is strongly correlated with its content and exhibits a good linear correlation (Y = 0.0376 + 4.899X , R 2 = 0.9999), thus demonstrating favorable accuracy and sensitivity for the quantitative determination of lipid content. In conclusion, the lipid content of live E. Sinensis can be directly obtained based on an established method, indicating a great application potential in food and other fields.

Abstract Remotely-sensed canopy temperature from infrared thermometer (IRT) sensors has long been shown to be effective for detecting plant water stress. A field study was conducted to investigate peach tree responses to deficit irrigation which was controlled using canopy to air temperature difference (ΔT) during the postharvest period at the USDA-ARS (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service) San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center in Parlier, California, USA. The experimental site consisted of a 1.6 ha early maturing peach tree orchard. A total of 18 IRT sensors were used to control six irrigation treatments including furrow, micro-spray, and surface drip irrigation systems with and without postharvest deficit irrigation. During the postharvest period in the 2012–2013 and 2013–2014 growing seasons, ΔT threshold values at mid-day was tested to trigger irrigation in three irrigation systems. The results showed that mid-day stem water potentials (ψ) for well irrigated trees were maintained at a range of −0.5 to −1.2 MPa while ψ of deficit irrigated trees dropped to lower values. Soil water content in deficit surface drip irrigation treatment was higher compared to deficit furrow and micro-spray irrigation treatments in 2012. The number of fruits and fruit weight from peach trees under postharvest deficit irrigation treatment were less than those well-watered trees; however, no statistically significant (at the p < 0.05 level) reduction in fruit size or quality was found for trees irrigated by surface drip and micro-spray irrigation systems by deficit irrigation. Beside doubles, we found an increased number of fruits with deep sutures and dimples which may be a long-term (seven-year postharvest regulated deficit irrigation) impact of deficit irrigation on this peach tree variety. Overall, deployment of IRT sensors provided real-time measurement of canopy water status and the information is valuable for making irrigation management decisions.

Abstract The analytical expressions for the complex amplitude of integral and fractional perfect vortex (PV) beams propagating in a gradient-index (GRIN) medium are derived. The intensity and phase distributions, propagation trajectories, Poynting vectors, and the effects of topological charge and refractive index at the medium axis on the intensity of both beams in the medium are numerically investigated. It is shown that both beams propagate periodically in the GRIN medium with alternating spot focusing and reconstruction. Unlike the integral PV beam, the fractional PV beam has a dark line in intensity profiles and a line edge dislocation in phase distributions along the positive
