Abstract In order to understand how the biomechanical properties of rabbit cornea change over time after corneal ablation, 21 healthy adult rabbits were used in this study, with the left eye as experimental side and the right eye as the control side. Firstly, a lamellar knife was used to remove a portion of the anterior corneal surface tissue (30%~50% of the original corneal thickness) from the left eye of each rabbit, as an animal model simulating corneal refractive surgery. Secondly, postoperative experimental rabbits were kept for one, three, or six months until being euthanized. Strip specimens were produced using their corneas

Abstract Objective: The sneaky onset and dismal prognosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) make it an important public health issue. Obesity-related kidney illness has garnered more attention in recent times. Establishing and validating a risk prediction model for chronic renal illness in overweight or obese adults was the goal of this investigation.
Methods: Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were used for analysis. The definition of CKD was reduced renal function (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²), while overweight and obesity were characterized through a body mass index exceeding 24 kg/m². The dataset was divided into derivation and validation cohorts using a 7:3 ratio. With respect to the derivation cohort, we constructed a prediction model using LASSO analysis and multivariate logistic regression. The model's performance was evaluated using Hosmer-Lemeshow tests, calibration curves, decision curve analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The validation cohort's model was subjected to additional assessment.
Results: The study was based on survey data from 2011 to 2015 and comprised 3246 individuals who were overweight or obese, with 2274 being part of the derivation cohort and 972 being part of the validation cohort. The research constructed a prediction model that included age, sex, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, triglyceride, hypertension, and BMI. The validation cohort's area under the ROC curve was 0.812 (95% CI = 0.763, 0.859) while the derivation cohort's was 0.789 (95% CI = 0.754, 0.831). Hosmer-Lemeshow tests were utilized to evaluate the model's accuracy in the validation and derivation cohorts (P = 0.681 and 0.547, respectively). The calibration curve showed a high level of consistency between the actual observations and the projected outcomes. According to decision curve analysis, the model offered significant net advantages.
Conclusions: The forecasting model established in this research has predictive value for CKD in patients with overweight or obesity. These findings could help doctors conduct early detection and intervention in clinical practice and further improve patient prognosis.

Abstract The emergence of peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) that utilize target-oriented peptide moieties as carriers of cytotoxic payloads, interconnected with various cleavable/noncleavable linkers, resulted in the key-foundation of the new era of targeted therapeutics. They are capable of retaining the integrity of conjugates in the blood circulatory system as well as releasing the drugs at the tumor microenvironment. Other valuable advantages are specificity and selectivity toward targeted-receptors, higher penetration ability, and drug-loading capacity, making them a suitable candidate to play their vital role as promising carrier agents. In this review, we summarized the types of cell-targeting (CTPs) and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) that have broad applications in the advancement of targeted drug-delivery systems (DDS). Moreover, the techniques to overcome the limitations of peptide-chemistry for their extensive implementation to construct the PDCs. Besides this, the diversified breakthrough of linker chemistry, and ample knowledge of various cytotoxic payloads used in PDCs in recent years, as well as the mechanism of action of PDCs was critically discussed. The principal aim is to provide scattered and diversified knowledge in one place and to help researchers understand the pinching knots in the science of PDC development, also their progression toward a bright future for PDCs as novel theranostics in clinical practice.

Abstract Purpose: Abnormal iris mechanical properties have been considered to be an important cause of pupillary-block and angle-closure glaucoma. In this research, viscoelasticity, anisotropy and location-dependence of mechanical properties of rabbit iris were investigated using uniaxial tensile test.
Methods: Iris strips were taken along three directions: inner-circumferential direction (ICD), outer-circumferential direction (OCD) and radial direction (RD), respectively. Quasi-static tensile tests and stress-relaxation tests were applied on the iris strips. Then, the stress-stretch data was fitted with third order Ogden model; the stress-relaxation data was fitted with the third order Prony series model. Through comparing the tangent modulus and relaxation limit of the strips from different directions and locations, the viscoelasticity, anisotropy and location-dependence of mechanical properties of rabbit iris were explored.
Results: The tangent moduli of iris at the stretch of 1.05 along ICD, OCD, and RD were 3.2 ± 1.4 kPa, 4.2 ± 2.6 kPa, 1.5 ± 0.8 kPa, respectively. Iris strips in ICD and OCD were found to have almost the same stress-relaxation behavior, and both relaxed slower than iris strips in RD.
Conclusions: The mechanical properties of the iris were typically nonlinear, viscoelastic, anisotropic and location-dependent. The stress growth rate of the circumferential direction iris strip is significantly lower than that of RD and the stress-relaxation rate is significantly higher than that of the RD. That is, the iris is more prone to deformation in RD and the stress-retention ability after deformation in RD is weak, which is consistent with the fact that the iris bombe more likely happens in RD in vivo. The results of this study may also help us to establish a more accurate finite element model to simulate the flow field of humor aqueous and find the key factor of pupillary-block.

Abstract Background: Bloodborne occupational exposure is a major public health concern of the China Health Commission, especially among midwives who are at high risk among healthcare workers. Knowledge of occupational exposure and appropriate protective behaviors play important roles in reducing occupational exposure. The purpose of this study was to understand the knowledge and level of protection against bloodborne occupational exposure among midwives in China.
Methods: This was a multi-center, cross-sectional study. Midwives from hospitals that are members of Infectious Disease Nursing Committee of Chinese Nursing Association were selected as survey participants from February 2019 to February 2022 using a judged sampling method. Data were collected by using a self-developed questionnaire for Chinese midwives to report their current knowledge and behavior related to bloodborne occupational exposure protection.
Results: A total of 2850 questionnaires were distributed and 2742 valid questionnaires were obtained, resulting in an effective rate of 96.21 %. Midwives scored 2742 (6.495 ± 1.529) points for their knowledge about bloodborne occupational exposure protection, with the level and type of hospital being independent factors affecting the midwives' knowledge of bloodborne occupational exposure protection (χ2 = 27.284, P = 0.038; χ2 = 28.374, P = 0.000). Of the midwives, 1460 were qualified for bloodborne occupational exposure protection behavior, with a qualified rate of 53.25 %. Working years (χ2 = 9.372, P = 0.002) and working hours (χ2 = 13.933, P = 0.000) were also the independent factors for bloodborne occupational exposure protective behavior in midwives.
Conclusion: Chinese midwives possess relatively good knowledge of bloodborne exposure protection against bloodborne infectious diseases, but their behavioral level is not optimistic. Improvements to both knowledge and behavioral level of bloodborne occupational exposure protection are necessary.

Abstract The vitreous body keeps the lens and retina in place and protects these tissues from physical insults. Existing studies have reported that the mechanical properties of vitreous body varied after liquefaction, suggesting mechanical properties could be effective parameters to identify vitreous liquefaction process. Thus, in this work, we aimed to propose a method to determine the mechanical properties of vitreous bodies. Fresh porcine eyes were divided into three groups, including the untreated group, the 24 h liquefaction group and the 48 h liquefaction group, which was injected collagenase and then kept for 24 h or 48 h. The indentation tests were carried out on the vitreous body in its natural location while the posterior segment of the eye was fixed in the container. A finite element model of a specimen undertaking indentation was constructed to simulate the indentation test with surface tension of vitreous body considered. Using the inverse method, the mechanical parameters of the vitreous body and the surface tension coefficient were determined. For the same parameter, values were highest in the untreated group, followed by the 24 h liquefaction group and the lowest in the 48 h liquefaction group. For C
