Abstract The growth of superlattices (SLs) made from self-assembled nanocrystals (NCs) is a powerful method for creating new materials and gaining insight into fundamental molecular dynamics. Previous explorations of NCSL syntheses have mostly compared them to crystallization. However, NCSL synthesis has not broadly shown cooling crystallization from saturated solutions as a reversible crystallization-dissolution process. We demonstrate the reversible growth of NCSLs by dispersing NCs in liquid crystal (LC) "smart solvents," and harnessing the transitions between the isotropic and nematic phases of the LCs. The growth mode and morphology can be tuned. This process is a model platform for studying crystallization and demonstrates great potential in manufacturing NCSLs as colloidal crystals through liquid-phase epitaxy or colloidal synthesis.

Abstract Plant MAPK cascade performs a critical role in the regulation of plant immunity and disease resistance. Although the function of MAPK cascade in immunity regulation is partially conserved between different species, the mechanism varies in different host and pathogen combinations. To date, the MAPK cascade function of woody plants in the regulation of disease resistance has seldom been reported. Here, we present evidence to show that apple

Abstract Electrochemical glycerol oxidation (EGO) emerges as a promising route to valorize glycerol, an underutilized byproduct from biodiesel production, into value-added chemicals. This study employed three types of gold (Au) nanocrystals with controlled shapes to elucidate the facet-dependent electrocatalytic behavior in EGO. Octahedral, rhombic dodecahedral, and cubic Au nanocrystals with {111}, {110}, and {100} facets, respectively, were precisely synthesized with uniform size and shape. Rhombic dodecahedra exhibited the lowest onset potential for EGO due to facile AuOH formation, while octahedra showed enhanced electrochemical activity for glycerol oxidation and resistance to poisoning. In-situ FTIR analysis revealed that Au {111} surfaces selectively favored C

Abstract Proton conductors are essential functional materials with a wide variety of potential applications in energy storage and conversion. In order to address the issues of low proton conductivity and poor stability in conventional proton conductors, a simple and valid ion-exchange method was proposed in this study for the introduction of stable and ultrahigh proton conductivity in layered rare earth hydroxides (LRHs). Test analyses by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction revealed that the exchange of H

Abstract In this research, we analyzed the protective effects of red-fleshed apple flavonoid extracts (RAFEs) on male reproductive injury induced by busulfan, using both in vitro and in vivo models. In the cell-based experiments, RAFEs significantly improved cell viability and proliferation rates compared to control groups. Similarly, in vivo testing with male mice showed that RAFEs and whole apple flavonoid extracts (WAFEs) enhanced various biochemical and liver function-related indicators in the testes; however, RAFEs demonstrated superior efficacy in mitigating testicular damage. Through immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting, we found that RAFEs notably enhanced the expression of spermatogenesis-related genes. Moreover, RAFEs increased the expression of oxidative stress- and apoptosis-related genes, thereby effectively reducing oxidative damage in the testes. These findings highlight the potential of RAFEs as natural agents for the prevention and treatment of male reproductive injury, paving the way for future research and potential therapeutic applications.

Abstract Smectite clay minerals have an outsize impact on the response of clay-rich media to common stimuli, such as hydration and ion exchange, motivating extensive effort to understand behaviors resulting from these processes such as swelling and exfoliation. Smectites are common and historic systems for investigating colloidal and interfacial phenomena, with two swelling regimes commonly identified across myriad clays: osmotic swelling at high water activity and crystalline swelling at low water activity. However, no current swelling model seamlessly spans the full ranges of water, salt and clay content encountered in natural or engineered settings. Here, we show that structures previously rationalized as either osmotic or crystalline coexist as a rich array of distinct colloidal phases that differ by water content, layer stacking thickness, and curvature. We present an analytical model for intermolecular potentials among water, salt and clay in both mono- and divalent electrolytes that predicts swelling pressures across high and low water activities. Our results indicate that all clay swelling is osmotic swelling, but that the osmotic pressure of charged mineral interfaces becomes attractive and dominates that of the electrolyte at high clay activities. Global energy minima are often not reached on experimental timescales due to many local energy minima that promote long-lived intermediate states with vast differences in clay, ion, and water mobilities, leading to hyperdiffusive layer dynamics driven by variable hydration-mediated interfacial charge. Teaser Distinct colloidal phases of swelling clays emerge via ion (de)hydration at mineral interfaces that drives hyperdiffusive layer dynamics as metastable smectites approach equilibrium.

Abstract Background: Obesity is a complex condition that is affected by a variety of factors, including the environment, behavior, and genetics. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying obesity remains poorly elucidated. Therefore, our study aimed at identifying key genes for human obesity using bioinformatics analysis.
Methods: The microarray datasets of adipose tissue in humans were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. After the selection of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), we used Lasso regression and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to further identify the feature genes. Moreover, immune cell infiltration analysis, gene set variation analysis (GSVA), GeneCards database and transcriptional regulation analysis were conducted to study the potential mechanisms by which the feature genes may impact obesity. We utilized receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to analysis the diagnostic efficacy of feature genes. Finally, we verified the feature genes in cell experiments and animal experiments. The statistical analyses in validation experiments were conducted using SPSS version 28.0, and the graph were generated using GraphPad Prism 9.0 software. The bioinformatics analyses were conducted using R language (version 4.2.2), with a significance threshold of p < 0.05 used.
Results: 199 DEGs were selected using Limma package, and subsequently, 5 feature genes (EGR2, NPY1R, GREM1, BMP3 and COL8A1) were selected through Lasso regression and SVM algorithm. Through various bioinformatics analyses, we found some signaling pathways by which feature genes influence obesity and also revealed the crucial role of these genes in the immune microenvironment, as well as their strong correlations with obesity-related genes. Additionally, ROC curve showed that all the feature genes had good predictive and diagnostic efficiency in obesity. Finally, after validation through in vitro experiments, EGR2, NPY1R and GREM1 were identified as the key genes.
Conclusions: This study identified EGR2, GREM1 and NPY1R as the potential key genes and potential diagnostic biomarkers for obesity in humans. Moreover, EGR2 was discovered as a key gene for obesity in human adipose tissue for the first time, which may provide novel targets for diagnosing and treating obesity.
