Abstract Background: This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of microplate trans-carpometacarpal joint fixation and non-trans-carpometacarpal joint fixation in treating fractures and dislocation or subluxation of the base of the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones.
Method: From 2015 to 2021, 100 cases of metacarpal basal fractures with dislocation or subluxation were randomly divided into the trans-carpometacarpal joint fixation group (group A) and non-trans-carpometacarpal joint fixation group (group B). Group A (n = 50) comprised 44 males and 6 females, with an average age of 28.8 ± 6.1 y and an Orthopedic Trauma Association (OTA) fracture classification of type B1 (n = 29) or C1 (n = 21). Group B (n = 50) comprised 45 males and 5 females, with an average age of 28.9 ± 5.7 y and an OTA fracture classification of type B1 (n = 28) or C1 (n = 22). All patients were complicated with dislocation or subluxation. The surgery time, fracture healing time, postoperative handgrip strength, and total active motion (TAM) scores of the ring and little fingers were recorded and compared between the two groups. The clinical efficacy of patients was evaluated using scoring methods such as DASH (disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand), visual analogue scale (VAS), and Mayo at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery.
Results: There was no significant difference in the general indexes, surgery time, or fracture healing time between the two groups (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in handgrip strength and TAM scores of the ring and little fingers between the two groups at 3 and 12 months postoperatively (P > 0.05), but there were significant differences in these indexes 6 months postoperatively (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the DASH, VAS, and Mayo scores at 3 and 12 months postoperatively (P > 0.05), but there were significant differences between the two groups in the DASH and Mayo scores (P < 0.05) but not the VAS score (P > 0.05) 6 months postoperatively.
Conclusion: In the treatment of fourth and fifth metacarpal basal fractures with dislocation or subluxation, both microplate transarticular fixation and non-transarticular fixation could achieve fracture fixation and healing, and each method had advantages and disadvantages. The clinically appropriate fixation method should be selected according to the experience of the surgeon and the degree and type of fracture and dislocation.

Abstract There is an association between personality traits and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In order to differentiate the association between various personality traits and GAD, a survey was conducted among PhD students in northern China (mainland). Three conclusions could be drawn with the help of regression analysis. At first, there is a positive association between Honesty-Humility (HH)/Emotionality (E)/Conscientiousness (C)/Openness to experience (O) and GAD, whereas there is a negative association between Agreeableness (A)/eXtraversion (X) and GAD. Secondly, age, gender, major, monthly income, HH, E, X, A, C and O could explain a 21.80 % variance in GAD. Thirdly, E and C are two robust factors that associated with GAD among PhD students.

Abstract There are many factors that can associate with smartphone addiction, and personality traits are included. With the popularity of mobile phones, smartphone addiction has become increasingly common. To differentiate the association between various personality traits and smartphone addiction, a survey was conducted in northern China (mainland). With the help of bivariate analysis and regression analysis, three conclusions could be drawn. To begin with, there is a negative association between Honesty-Humility (H-H)/Agreeableness (A)/Conscientiousness (C)/Openness to experience (O) and smartphone addiction, whereas there is a positive association between Emotionality (E)/eXtraversion (X) and smartphone addiction. Secondly, Emotionality, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Openness to experience could explain a 27.14% variance in smartphone addiction. Thirdly, Emotionality, eXtraversion and Agreeableness more significantly predict smartphone addiction than the other three personality traits.

Abstract Based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) model and the higher-order Poincaré sphere (HOPS) framework, we establish a general paradigm to investigate the paraxial evolution of a vector beam in a tripod EIT system. By quantum-optical analogy, we introduce a formalism with a generalized Pauli-like equation under rotational invariance, in which the pseudo-spin-orbit coupling (PSOC) and the spin-orbit nonseparability of light can coexist. More importantly, we find that both the PSOC-based real and imaginary potentials play a key role in controlling and modulating the nonseparable state of the vector beam to traverse the entire HOPS, where the orientation and ellipticity of the transmitted polarization can be modified by varying the PSOC coefficients. Therefore, an all-optical scheme can be proposed to improve the flexibility for tailoring the space-variant polarization of light in coherent media, where the tunable spatial-polarization multiplexing may be useful in conventional and quantum information processing.

Abstract Recent work focuses on how homophily (tastes for similarity) can lead to network segregation (the lack of intergroup friendships). Yet studies seldom consider whether and how levels of network segregation could also lead to the trend towards homophily over time. Instead, existing cross-sectional studies argue that intergroup exposure exacerbates homophily. By neglecting longitudinal data on changes to friendships and focusing on intergroup exposure rather than initial intergroup friendships, existing studies are likely to present an overly pessimistic view on the benefits of intergroup contact. Using longitudinal data and stochastic actor-oriented models, I study how levels of initial ethnic network segregation between students in Swedish Classrooms with "native" backgrounds and immigrant-origin students are related to subsequent levels of ethnic homophily. Results show that more initial network segregation in classroom friendship networks is linked to more ethnic homophily in network evolution, which suggests that beyond mere exposure, optimal conditions for contact and actual intergroup friendships are crucial for positive intergroup dynamics, and that their benefits can appear longitudinally.

Abstract Heavy metals in mine tailings lead to serious environmental problems. Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is widely used for treating the mine tailing. The high cost of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) reduces the profit of mine production. The work investigates the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing tailings by using slag-based cementitious materials for CPB. Flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) and limestone were used to modify the properties of samples. Results showed that the coupling addition of 6 wt% FGDG and 3 wt% limestone (A6L3) led to the highest compressive strength of CPB samples, which also presented satisfactory immobilization effects for Cr(VI). The compressive strength of CPB samples using A6L3 as a binder was comparable to the OPC-based sample, reaching about 5.53 MPa; the immobilization efficiency for Cr(VI) was about 99.5%. The effects of FGDG and limestone were twofold: the addition of FGDG favored the formation of ettringite and then contributed to a more compact structure; besides, incorporating limestone increased the packing density of the CPB system by decreasing the loosening and wedge effect.
