    Abstract Abstract This study aims to investigate if the radiosensitivity of non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells can be regulated by long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) colon cancer associated transcript1 (CCAT1). CCAT1 was detected by quantitative reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR) in NSCLC cells (A549, H1299, SK‐MES1, H460, and H647) and human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE). H460 and A549 cells were then selected for the determination of CCAT1 expression after exposure to radiation (0, 2, 4, 6 Gy) at different time points (0, 6, 12, 24 h). Colony forming assay was performed to evaluate the effects of CCAT1 siRNA or pcDNA3.1‐CCAT1 vector on the radiosensitivity of H460 and A549 cells. Then, flow cytometry, western blotting and qRT‐PCR were also conducted. CCAT1 was increased in NSCLC cells when compared with 16HBE cells, which was declined in a time‐ and dosage‐dependent manner after exposure to radiation. The H460 and A549 cell colonies were decreased and the γ‐H2AX expression was elevated with the increase of radiation dosage, which was more obvious in those transfected with CCAT1 siRNA. CCAT1 downregulation arrested NSCLC cells at G2/M phase. Moreover, the enhanced apoptosis of radiotherapy‐treated NSCLC cells with reductions of p‐p38/p38, p‐ERK/ERK, and p‐JNK/JNK was promoted by siCCAT1, but it was reversed by pcDNA3.1‐CCAT1 vector. Inhibiting CCAT1 regulated cell cycle, DNA damage and apoptosis of NSCLC cells, and affected MAPK pathway, eventually improving the radiosensitivity of NSCLC.

    Abstract AbstractIt has become almost a stylized fact that sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) are central to improving productivity, welfare, and food security. However, SAPs adoption rates have been perceived to be generally low in rural China. Understanding the factors influencing SAPs adoption is critical for sustainable food system development. Drawing on a survey of Chinese farmers, this study examined the determinants associated with adoption decision and intensity of multiple SAPs using a Heckman two-stage model. The findings showed that the adoption of SAPs is a multi-stage sophisticated process resulting from the interplay of several elements, such as individual characteristics, government support, and social networks. Age, education, risk attitude, cognition of SAPs, market access, services from Agricultural Science and Technology Park, policy subsidies, technical training, access to credit, and strong ties were the main determinants encouraging SAPs adoption. Adoption decision also significantly depended on farm size; whereas, adoption intensity relied on off-farm activities, town access, and information channels. This study contributes to the literature by identifying the critical determinants of farmers’ adoption behavior of SAPs in China. Furthermore, our findings are of great value to policymakers as they can target the aforementioned factors to achieve higher SAPs adoption.

    Abstract In the prediction and modeling analysis of wear degree in the field of industrial parts processing, there are problems such as poor prediction ability for long sequence data and low sensitivity of output feedback to changes in input signals. In this paper, a combined prediction model is proposed that integrates dual attention mechanisms and self-regressive correction. Firstly, pre-processing is performed on the collected wear data to eliminate noise and aberrant mutation data. Then, the feature attention mechanism is introduced to analyze the input data sequence, and the weights of each feature under the temporal condition are set based on the contribution of the prediction results, thereby obtaining the LSTM hidden state at the current time. Subsequently, the temporal attention mechanism is introduced to perform a weighted calculation of the hidden state information, analyze the correlation of long-term sequential wear data, and decode and output the analysis results. Finally, the ARIMA model is used to perform linear correction on the predicted results to improve the accuracy of wear degree prediction. The proposed model is compared and analyzed with the models that are highly related in recent research on real-world wear degree datasets. The experimental results show that the improved model has a better ability to improve the corresponding problems and has a significant increase in prediction accuracy.

    Abstract The conventional Walsh function just takes values of +1 and -1 and can only track limited signal states. However, based on the characteristics of Walsh functions that can capture the frequency of square wave signals, this article proposes a generalized Walsh transform algorithm to process multi-valued rectangular wave signals. As an extension of the traditional Walsh functions, generalized Walsh functions have advantages in signal frequency matching and sequency spectrum amplitude extraction, which makes them well suited to express the valuable signal. First, we infer the invariance displacement theory in the time and sequency domains, limiting the value of a circular time shift to ensure the concentrated distribution of the signal sequency energy. This limitation lays a good foundation for constructing generalized Walsh functions. Then, two types of generalized Walsh functions are built by combining the characteristics of different periodic rectangular waves. We deduce two properties of orthogonality and completeness to prove the ability of the constructed functions to match the frequency and the extracted energy. Finally, we compare multiple filtering methods to verify the reliability of the proposed method.

    Abstract Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the seventh most prevalent cancer globally, often characterized by chemo-resistance and immunosuppression, which significantly hampers treatment efficacy. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has recently emerged as a promising adjuvant oncotherapy with substantial potential and advantages. In this study, Piezobrush® PZ2, a handheld CAP unit based on the piezoelectric direct discharge technology, was used to generate and deliver non-thermal plasma. We aimed to investigate the effects of CAPPZ2 on various types of HNC cells and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. In addition, we endeavored to examine the efficacy of combining CAPPZ2 with chemotherapy drugs (i.e., cisplatin) or immune checkpoint blockade (ICB, i.e., PD1 antibody) in HNC treatment. Firstly, the results demonstrated that CAPPZ2 exerted anti-neoplastic functions through inhibiting cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and promoting apoptosis and autophagy. Secondly, using transcriptomic sequencing, Western blotting, and quantitative real-time PCR, the mechanisms underlying CAPPZ2 treatment in vitro was presumed to be a multitargeted blockade of major cancer survival pathways, such as redox balance, glycolysis, and PI3K/AKT/mTOR/HIF-1α signaling. Lastly, combinatorial thearpy containing CAPPZ2 and cisplatin or PD-1 antibody significantly suppressed tumor growth and prolonged recipient survival in vivo. Collectively, the synergistic effects of CAPPZ2 and cisplatin or PD-1 antibody could serve as a promising solution to enhance head and neck tumor elimination.

    Abstract Abstract Although stem cell-based therapy has demonstrated considerable potential to manage certain diseases more successfully than conventional surgery, it nevertheless comes with inescapable drawbacks that might limit its clinical translation. Compared to stem cells, stem cell-derived exosomes possess numerous advantages, such as non-immunogenicity, non-infusion toxicity, easy access, effortless preservation, and freedom from tumorigenic potential and ethical issues. Exosomes can inherit similar therapeutic effects from their parental cells such as embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells through vertical delivery of their pluripotency or multipotency. After a thorough search and meticulous dissection of relevant literature from the last five years, we present this comprehensive, up-to-date, specialty-specific and disease-oriented review to highlight the surgical application and potential of stem cell-derived exosomes. Exosomes derived from stem cells (e.g., embryonic, induced pluripotent, hematopoietic, mesenchymal, neural, and endothelial stem cells) are capable of treating numerous diseases encountered in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, head and neck surgery, ophthalmology, and obstetrics and gynecology. The diverse therapeutic effects of stem cells-derived exosomes are a hierarchical translation through tissue-specific responses, and cell-specific molecular signaling pathways. In this review, we highlight stem cell-derived exosomes as a viable and potent alternative to stem cell-based therapy in managing various surgical conditions. We recommend that future research combines wisdoms from surgeons, nanomedicine practitioners, and stem cell researchers in this relevant and intriguing research area.

    Abstract COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant increase in medical and infected domestic waste, greatly increasing risk of human infected with SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, it is critical to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 from solid waste to humans. Current commercial disinfectants present a high carbon footprint issue. Hence, we prepared a renewable wheat straw-based bio-liquid that can damage SARS-CoV-2 RNA and protein. The wet thermochemical extraction (WTE) bio-liquid, with total organic carbon concentration exceeding 1892 mg/L, could effectively damage the virus. However, dry thermochemical extraction (DTE) samples were not efficient due to their low content of effective compounds. The life cycle assessment showed that WTE bio-liquid production implies lower energy and environmental negative impacts than DTE. Moreover, the process by-product, char, can simultaneously reduce 3.1 million tonnes of global CO₂ emissions while used as coal substitute. Yield of bio-liquid extremely exceed commercial disinfectant with just 1 % wheat straw utilisation, which meet the demand of processing solid waste. Further, their costs are significantly lower than commercial disinfectants, which are suitable for developing countries. Therefore, the antiviral bio-liquid produced from agricultural straw can be a new way to meet the needs of preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and resume the sustainable development of society.

    Abstract Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is a global development strategy aimed to address the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change. Expanding the implementation of conservation agriculture (CA), a vital component of CSA, is essential for enhancing agricultural and food security resilience while sustainably managing arable land. However, the extensive heterogeneity of biophysical and socioeconomic conditions presents significant complexities in promoting CA adoption. Addressing these challenges, this study carried out a comprehensive theoretical investigation of biophysical and socioeconomic factors influencing CA adoption and performance, integrating stakeholder feedback to create a systematic and robust evaluation index system for assessing CA suitability. By integrating multi-influencing factor techniques and fuzzy logic methods, we spatially identified suitable areas for CA implementation in China, providing valuable insights for land use policy. The reliability of the models was verified through a sensitivity analysis using the map removal sensitivity analysis method and the extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test. The results indicated that 29.78% of the cultivated land was unsuitable or marginally suitable for CA, while 29.30 and 40.92% were determined to be moderately suitable and suitable zones, respectively. Suitable cultivated land was primarily distributed in the northern arid and semi-arid regions, the Loess Plateau, the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, and the Northeast China Plain. Conversely, unsuitable, and marginally suitable cultivated land was predominantly located in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Middle-lower Yangtze Plain, Sichuan Basin and surrounding areas, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and Southern China.     Abstract Objective To investigate the effects of valproic acid (VPA) on skin wound healing in mice. Methods Full-thickness wounds were created in mice, and then VPA was applied. The wound areas were quantified daily. In the wounds, granulation tissue growth, epithelialization, collagen deposition, and the mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines were measured; furthermore, apoptotic cells were labeled. In vitro , VPA was added to RAW 264.7 cells (macrophages) stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, and apoptotic Jurkat cells were cocultured with the VPA-pretreated macrophages. Then, phagocytosis was analyzed, and the mRNA levels of phagocytosis-associated molecules and inflammatory cytokines were measured in the macrophages. Results VPA application significantly accelerated wound closure, granulation tissue growth, collagen deposition, and epithelialization. In wounds, the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β were decreased by VPA, whereas those of IL-10 and transforming growth factor-β1 were increased. Additionally, VPA reduced the number of apoptotic cells. In vitro , VPA inhibited the inflammatory activation of macrophages and promoted the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells by macrophages. Conclusion VPA accelerated skin wound healing, which could be partly attributable to its anti-inflammatory and apoptotic cell clearance-promoting effects, indicating that VPA could be a promising candidate for enhancing skin wound healing.
