    Abstract Archaeological work began in 1928 at Yinxu (also known as Yin Ruins), the site of the capital of the late Shang Dynasty, and the continuous excavations have yielded the discovery of numerous remains and relics. The late Shang Dynasty was the zenith of China’s Bronze Age, and research on various aspects of Yinxu has gained attention among Chinese and international archaeologists. The layout of Yinxu, especially the water conservancy systems, has become a popular subject of research in recent years. Nevertheless, quantitative research is lacking in the existing literature. Using geographic information systems (GIS) allows such research to be carried out. This study used the hydrology and density analysis modules of ArcGIS software to study the water system and urban layout of Yinxu quantitatively. The results show that the water conservancy system altered the surface runoff pattern of the city and effectively harnessed limited local water resources. The system, centered on artificial channels, was built during the Second Phase of Yinxu, largely because of climate change and the city’s expansion. Its construction, in turn, profoundly affected the layout of the city. Dwellings and handicraft workshops clustered around areas with abundant water resources; together with the Huan River, the large-scale water conservancy facilities acted as partitions that practically isolated the “central zone”, creating a wall-less defense system that differs from other capital cities in the Bronze Age of China.

    Abstract We propose a novel approach toward event detection in real-world continuous video sequences. The method: 1) is able to model arbitrary-order non-Markovian dependences in videos to mitigate local visual ambiguities; 2) conducts simultaneous event segmentation and labeling; and 3) is time-window free. The idea is to represent a video as an event stream of both high-level semantic events and low-level video observations. In training, we learn a point process model called a piecewise-constant conditional intensity model (PCIM) that is able to capture complex non-Markovian dependences in the event streams. In testing, event detection can be modeled as the inference of high-level semantic events, given low-level image observations. We develop the first inference algorithm for PCIM and show it samples exactly from the posterior distribution. We then evaluate the video event detection task on real-world video sequences. Our model not only provides competitive results on the video event segmentation and labeling task, but also provides benefits, including being interpretable and efficient.

    Abstract Hundreds of millions of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-LNP vaccine doses have already been administered to humans. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the immune effects of this platform. The mRNA-LNP-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is highly inflammatory, and its synthetic ionizable lipid component responsible for the induction of inflammation has a long in vivo half-life. Since chronic inflammation can lead to immune exhaustion and non-responsiveness, we sought to determine the effects of pre-exposure to the mRNA-LNP on adaptive immune responses and innate immune fitness. We found that pre-exposure to mRNA-LNPs or LNP alone led to long-term inhibition of the adaptive immune response, which could be overcome using standard adjuvants. On the other hand, we report that after pre-exposure to mRNA-LNPs, the resistance of mice to heterologous infections with influenza virus increased while resistance to Candida albicans decreased. The diminished resistance to Candida albicans correlated with a general decrease in blood neutrophil percentages. Interestingly, mice pre-exposed to the mRNA-LNP platform can pass down the acquired immune traits to their offspring, providing better protection against influenza. In summary, the mRNA-LNP vaccine platform induces long-term unexpected immunological changes affecting both adaptive immune responses and heterologous protection against infections. Thus, our studies highlight the need for more research to determine this platform's true impact on human health.

    Abstract Sleep-mediated overnight consolidation has been found to facilitate perceptual learning by promoting learners' generalization across talkers in their perception of novel segmental categories. Lexical tone is characterized by high variability across talkers, and displays dynamic change over time. For this reason, it remains unclear whether a similar effect of overnight consolidation would be found for perceptual learning of novel tonal contrasts. Thus, this study aims to examine whether overnight consolidation facilitates talker-independent learning of lexical tones in the identification and discrimination of novel Cantonese level tones by Mandarin listeners. Two groups of Mandarin listeners were perceptually trained either in the morning or in the evening. Listeners were trained in a tone identification (ID) task with feedback using stimuli produced by a trained talker. Their post-training changes and generalization to a novel talker were then tested in the ID and AX discrimination tasks using stimuli produced by trained and untrained talkers in three posttests following training: immediately after training, 12-hour delay, and 24-hour delay. While the evening group slept between the first and second posttests, the morning group did not. The accuracy rates in the ID task showed that the evening group showed an improved trend, predicted by their individual sleep time, in identifying the level tones produced by both the trained and untrained talkers; in contrast, the morning group showed a declining trend. The d-prime scores in the AX discrimination task did not show different patterns between the two groups. The finding of sleep-related identification changes over time suggests that overnight consolidation might have facilitated tone learning of stimuli produced by the novel talker and eventually facilitated the formation of a more talker-independent representation of novel tone categories in long-term memory.     Abstract Facing the increasing demand for various renewable energy storage devices and wearable and portable energy storage systems, the research on electrode materials with low costs and high energy densities has attracted great attention. Herein, free-standing rGO-CNT nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, in which the hierarchical porous network nanostructure is synergistically assembled by rGO nanosheets and CNT with interlaced network distribution. The rGO-CNT composite electrodes with synergistic enhancement of rGO and CNT exhibit high specific capacitance, excellent rate capability, exceptional conductivity and outstanding long-term cycling stability, especially for the optimal rGO-CNT 30 electrode. Applied to a symmetric supercapacitor systems (SSS) assembled with an rGO-CNT 30 electrode and with 1 M Na 2 SO 4 aqueous solution as the electrolyte, the SSS possesses a high energy density of 12.29 W h kg −1 and an outstanding cycling stability, with 91.42% of initial specific capacitance after 18,000 cycles. Results from these electrochemical properties suggest that the rGO-CNT 30 nanocomposite electrode is a promising candidate for the development of flexible and lightweight high-performance supercapacitors.

    Abstract The Middle Route of the South–North Water Diversion Project has changed the water resources pattern in China. As advanced equipment for the country, it is responsible for the water supply “lifeline” of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, etc. Ensuring its safe operation is a top priority to promote social stability and coordinated economic development between the North and the South. Used persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) technology to monitor the deformation of the high fill characteristic canal in Wenzhuang Village, Ye County, during the period from October 2016 to June 2017 for the South–North Water Diversion Project showed that there was significant deformation on the 1 km-long slope of the east bank of the canal, with the maximum deformation volume reaching 36 mm. Through the comparison and verification with the second order leveling data, there are more than 87% of the root mean square error of both less than ±2 mm. The correlation coefficient is 0.96, and the two were highly consistent in deformation trends and values. Through the vertical and cross-sectional analysis of the canal’s east bank and four key monitoring sections, it was found that the east bank of the canal presents overall uneven subsidence, and the closer the canal is to the water, the greater the canal deformation, and vice versa. Further comparison of the PS-InSAR deformation results of the canal from October 2016 to February 2018 proves that this technology cannot only monitor the subsidence range and rate of the South–North Water Diversion canal but also accurately identify the subsidence sequence of the east and west banks. It can provide reliable technical support for the safety monitoring and disaster prevention of the South–North Water Diversion canal characterized by high fill and deep excavation.

    Abstract BackgroundBirk-Barel syndrome, also known as KCNK9 imprinting syndrome, is a rare fertility disorder. And the main clinical manifestations include congenital hypotonic, craniofacial malformation, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. Generally, such patients could be diagnosed beyond the infant period. Moreover, the delayed diagnosis might lead to a poor prognosis of rehabilitation therapy. However, neonatal obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was seldom reported in Birk-Barel syndrome. Here, we reported a severe neonatal OSA case induced by Birk-Barel syndrome, resulting in an early diagnosis with improved outcomes by integrative management.Case presentationThe proband was a neonate presenting with recurrent severe OSA, with craniofacial deformity and congenital muscle hypotonia. Bronchoscopy examinations indicated a negative finding of pharyngeal and bronchus stenosis, while laryngomalacia had been observed. Whole exon sequencing demonstrated a c. 710C>A heterozygous variant resulting in a change of amino acid (p.A237D). This variant resulted in a change of amino acid sequence, affected protein features and changed splice site leading to a structural deformation in KCNK9 protein. This p.A237D variant also affected the crystal structure on the p.G129 site. Additionally, we used the mSCM tool to measure the free energy changes between wild-type and mutant protein, which indicated highly destabilizing (−2.622 kcal/mol).ConclusionThis case report expands the understanding of Birk-Barel syndrome and indicates that OSA could serve as the on-set manifestation of Birk-Barel syndrome. This case emphasized genetic variants which were associated with severe neonatal OSA. Adequate WES assessment promotes early intervention and improves the prognosis of neurological disorders in young children.

    Abstract The onset of COVID-19 has re-emphasized the importance of FinTech especially in developing countries as the major powers of the world are already enjoying the advantages that come with the adoption of FinTech. Handling of physical cash has been established as a means of transmitting the novel corona virus. Again, research has established that, been unbanked raises the potential of sinking one into abject poverty. Over the years, developing countries have been piloting the various forms of FinTech, but the very one that has come to stay is the Mobile Money Transactions (MMT). As mobile money transactions attempt to gain a foothold, it faces several problems, the most important of them is mobile money fraud. This paper seeks to provide a solution to this problem by looking at machine learning algorithms based on support vector machines (kernel-based), gradient boosted decision tree (tree-based) and Naïve Bayes (probabilistic based) algorithms, taking into consideration the imbalanced nature of the dataset. Our experiments showed that the use of gradient boosted decision tree holds a great potential in combating the problem of mobile money fraud as it was able to produce near perfect results.
