Abstract The extensive expansion of coastal land-based aquaculture ponds (CLAP) has resulted in substantial wetland loss. To effectively monitor the dynamics of CLAP on a large scale, critical spatial information derived from continuous datasets is essential. Here, we generate the inaugural map depicting the changes in aquaculture pond coverage across the coastal regions both of China and Southeast Asia from 1990 to 2020 by utilizing the long time-series Landsat archive with an object-oriented hierarchical classification method. We extracted coastal water bodies using the Otsu algorithm and established a water inundation frequency index to eliminate interference from temporary water facilities. This process allowed us to identify potential distribution areas of aquaculture ponds. To precisely map the spatial distribution of CLAP within these identified areas, we employed an object-oriented K-nearest neighbor approach with spectral, geometric, and water index features as classification features. The cumulative coverage of CLAP in China and Southeast Asia reached 23,121 km2 by 2020, marking a net increase of 12,700 km2 since 1990. Notably, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam emerged as the primary contributors to these changes within our study area. Regions exhibiting dense aquaculture activities are predominantly concentrated in the northern region above 10 degrees latitude and along the eastern coastlines of various countries. This aquaculture pond map reserves fine spatial detail by effectively distinguishing drainage channels, rice seedling fields, and embankments surrounding aquaculture ponds. It serves as a valuable resource for guiding coastal resource management and environmental protection initiatives.

Abstract This paper explores greenhouse gas emission intensity and economy of centralized and on-site wet waste disposal mode, while comprehensively evaluating the two modes for decision-making. Based on the fieldwork in Shanghai’s 20 campuses of 15 universities, multiple scenarios that can reflect the different levels of technology and management in reality, were set for the following studies. The greenhouse gas emissions generated from centralized and on-site disposal modes of wet waste were calculated in two emission scenarios using Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Inventory, and the IPCC 2006 method. Additionally, the continuous cost input from the universities for the two disposal modes was analyzed in three cost-input scenarios using the Net Present Value method. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation of the two modes was also conducted by using Analytic Hierarchy Process and Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation under the five main factors of greenhouse gas emission—control, economy, stability, education and innovation, and bargaining power for municipal sanitation departments. The results revealed that the centralized disposal mode is superior to the on-site disposal mode in terms of greenhouse gas emission control and economy. The centralized disposal mode is a more rational choice due to the better comprehensive evaluation performance. It was also emphasized that the construction of the wet waste disposal system is so complicated that the academic community and the policymakers may have to pay more attention to the integration of system design, industrial development, and other aspects of wet waste disposal.

Abstract Participation in community affairs and activities is beneficial to the mental health of older adults. The current study attempted to confirm the mediating role of sense of community (SoC) between community participation (CP) and subjective well-being (SWB), and the moderating role of neuroticism between CP and SoC. A total of 465 older adults aged ≥65 years from China participated in both two-wave online surveys. The self-developed Community Participation questionnaire, the SoC scale, and the Neuroticism subscale were used to assess CP, SoC, and neuroticism, respectively. The four indicators of SWB were assessed by the Satisfaction with Life Scale, Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale. The results revealed that CP was associated with three indicators of SWB including life satisfaction, positive affect, and depressive symptoms, SoC mediated the above associations, and neuroticism negatively moderated the association between CP and SoC, after controlling for age, sex, education, spouse status, monthly income, and physical health. CP enhances older adults’ SWB through increasing their SoC. When compared to those older adults with a higher score of neuroticism, the enhancing effect of CP on SoC is stronger for those with lower scores of neuroticism.

Abstract Mangrove forests, as the most productive coastal ecosystems in tropical and subtropical regions, provide essential ecosystem services to coastal communities. However, intensive coastal anthropogenic threats have resulted in a dramatic decline in mangrove coverage throughout many developing regions. Therefore, it is urgent to investigate the cumulative vulnerability of mangroves to these anthropogenic threats. Here, we used geospatial datasets and the “exposure–sensitivity–resilience” conceptual framework to evaluate spatial vulnerability of mangroves in mainland China in 2020. We found that nearly 68% of mangrove areas in mainland China were identified with medium to high vulnerability. Land-based pollution and coastal aquaculture expansion were the main threats leading to high vulnerability in the whole study area, but the principal drivers of mangrove vulnerability at local scale were various. The vulnerability hotspots induced by pollution and aquaculture were mostly located in Guangdong and Fujian Province, and those regions exposed to sea-level rise were concentrated in Hainan Province. Our study provides the first dataset of spatially explicit-based solution for reducing mangrove vulnerability to intensive coastal anthropogenic threats on a national scale. The spatial distribution of principal vulnerability drivers could provide a guideline for mangrove conservation and coastal-ecosystem-based management.

Abstract It has been observed from previous large earthquakes that weakening the structural foundation can reduce the damage of the structure itself by allowing a rocking motion to release the seismic energy, and this seismic design philosophy is gradually applied to new constructions. In this paper, a simplified model of the motion process of a rigid rocking block is proposed, the rocking motion equation of rigid rocking block is derived, and the parameter analysis is carried out. It was found that the height–width ratio and damping have a great impact on the rocking response of the structure. On this basis, combined with the Winkler foundation model, the equation of motion of the rigid rocking block considering the flexibility of the foundation is established. Through the analysis of an example, it is found that damping plays an important role in the overturning resistance of high-rise buildings and the soil elastic coefficient has a greater impact on the higher structure.

Abstract Film cooling is a major cooling technique used in modern gas turbines and air engines. The geometry of film-cooling holes is the fundamental aspect affecting the cooling performance. In this paper, a new cooling configuration called the double-expansion film-cooling hole has been put forward, which yields better performance than the widely used shaped holes and is easy to manufacture. The double-expansion holes at inclination angles of <semantics> α = 30 ∘ </semantics> , <semantics> 45 ∘ </semantics> , and <semantics> 60 ∘ </semantics> are optimized using the genetic algorithm and the Kriging surrogate model, which is trained by CFD data randomly sampled using the Latin hypercube method. The numerically optimized double-expansion holes at different inclination angles were experimentally evaluated and compared with the optimized single-expansion laid-back fan-shaped holes, and the optimized double-expansion hole at <semantics> α = 30 ∘ </semantics> was manually modified based on experiment results. Compared with the optimal single-expansion holes, the area-averaged cooling effectiveness of the double-expansion holes was increased by <semantics> 34.5 % </semantics> at <semantics> α = 30 ∘ </semantics> , by <semantics> 27.8 % </semantics> at <semantics> α = 45 ∘ </semantics> , and basically the same at <semantics> α = 60 ∘ </semantics> , showing the benefit of the double-expansion concept. The loss mechanism of film cooling was also analyzed in the perspective of the entropy generation rate, showing the optimal double-expansion holes have 21% less loss compared to a baseline narrow single-expansion hole. It was also found that CFD sometimes predicts a different trend from the experiment in optimization, and the experimental validation is necessary.

Abstract Abstract As a kind of carcinoma with increasing morbidity, poor prognosis, and high mortality, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is challenging for clinical management. Chemotherapy has been the standard treatment for ESCC over decades, while its clinical outcomes remain unsatisfying. And the regimen that combine standard chemotherapy with targeted therapy also demonstrates little effect. However, the advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) proved to be a game changer in cancer treatment. Recent clinical trials had sprung up to evaluate the combined effect of ICI and chemotherapy regarding first‐line ESCC treatment. What's more, researchers attempt to explore the possibility to implement ICI monotherapy regarding second‐line ESCC treatment. In conclusion, most of the first‐line trails present inspiring achievement, while ICI monotherapy indicates little improvement for ESCC treatment. To point out the heterogenicity that could be the potential reasons biasing the pooled results, the differences of PD‐L1 immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays, geographic regions, chemotherapy regimens, and sex disparity among these trails are discussed respectively. In addition, the adverse events occurred during the trails are summarized, which confirm the safety of immunotherapy and chemoimmunotherapy. The article comprehensively reviews the representative explorations of using chemoimmunotherapy strategies in ESCC, as well as the deficiencies among them. Moreover, we highlight some feasible approaches. It will be beneficial for conducting more precise clinical trials on chemoimmunotherapy for ESCC in the future, including the use of more appropriate PD‐L1 IHC assays, careful consideration of the heterogeneity of the enrolled population and the optimal combination of chemotherapy and ICI.

Abstract Abstract The low mechanical strength, water deficiency, and oxidative protection of organic membranes impede their use as food-grade packaging materials. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) tends to lose its activity owing to its instability. In this study, CIN was added to flaxseed gum (FG)/chitosan (CS) films prepared in a “sandwich” structure. The influence of CIN dosage on the properties of the composite films was studied, and the film formation mechanism of the membrane was explored. The elongation at break, water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, and light transmittance of the composite film with 1.5% CIN were lower than those of the FG/CS/FG film. Supplementation of the composite membrane with CIN generated new hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and C-O-C bonds, which converted the structure of the composite film into a sheet and increased its crystallinity without markedly affecting its thermal stability. Therefore, CIN is an extremely useful additive for improving the applicability of flaxseed gum/CS membranes as food-grade packaging films.

Abstract Cardiac arrhythmias are common clinical cardiovascular diseases. Arrhythmias are abnormalities in the frequency, rhythm, site of origin, conduction velocity, or sequence of excitation of the cardiac impulses. Arrhythmia mechanisms include foldback, altered autonomic rhythm, and triggering mechanisms. It can cause palpitations, dizziness, black dawn, syncope, and angina pectoris and can worsen a preexisting cardiac disease, reduce the quality of life, and increase mortality. Also, by making it one of the constant challenges for the clinical cardiovascular physician, we can get more information. The study included 94 patients with atrial fibers, including 56 men and 38 women aged 57, 46, 11, and 68 years. There are 80 patients with nonatrial fibers, including 44 men and 36 women aged 56, 10, and 83 years. Those who can perform a normal coronary angiography and exclude congenital heart disease, heart valve disease, and other cardiovascular diseases. In both groups, a 256-layer spiral CT examination was performed. A pulmonary vein scanning protocol was applied to the patients with atrial fibrillation, and this can perform normal coronary angiography and exclude those with cardiovascular diseases such as congenital heart disease and valvular heart disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anatomical changes of the left atrium and its adjacent structures by applying the 256 nm spiral CT imaging to visualize the left atrium and its adjacent structures and by applying the MPR technology, VR technology, and simulation endoscope techniques.
