    Abstract Promoting engagement with brand posts tends to be important for brands and marketers who aim for success in social media marketing. With the variety of social media available today, it can be difficult for brand and marketing practitioners, especially small brands, to coordinate their efforts across different platforms. This study examines platform and content strategies in terms of engagement with brand posts through data mining and one-way ANOVA. The results suggest that for each brand, engagement with brand posts can be improved by choosing an appropriate platform strategy, instead of using a different content strategy across platforms. These findings contribute to a limited analysis of platform strategies for social media marketing engagement of today’s brands.

    Abstract With the rise of social media, brand communication has undergone tremendous changes. In particular, small brands have been affected severely. Given this, this study investigated strategies for how small brands can survive in the digital age using a case study of Louise Kennedy, a representative Irish fashion designer brand. After examining a total of 2,899 tweets, the study finds a strategic mechanism for heritage branding on social media, and confirms the important role of cultural heritage in the success of small brands. As a result, the study extends prior studies on heritage branding to fashion marketing on social media. Also, it provides actionable insights for small brands to survive the social media firestorm.

    Abstract IntroductionThe rapid growth in the population of older adults has put tremendous pressure on medical and social services in countries including China. Community care services are a feasible solution for promoting healthy aging in developing countries. This study investigated the association between community care services and the health of older adults in China.MethodUsing nationally representative survey data from China, consisting of four waves conducted in 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014, a balanced panel dataset was constructed using a sample of 4,700 older adults (33.1% aged 80 years or older, 51.0% residing in rural areas, and 48.8% women). We employed linear regression models with time-fixed effects and instrumental variable approaches to estimate the effect of community care services on the health of older adults, as well as the differences in these effects across subgroups.ResultsThe results showed that community care services lead to a significant improvement in both the objective and subjective health and wellbeing of older adults. Among the various service offerings, spiritual recreation services led to a significant increase in both objective and subjective health scores, while medical care services significantly improved wellbeing. This suggests a varied effect of subdivided service types. Further evidence suggests that spiritual recreation services have a significant health-enhancing effect on multiple groups of older adults, and the effect of medical care services is more effective for those living in rural areas, women, and those who are older than 80 years (all p < 0.05).DiscussionFew studies have examined the impact of community care services on the health of older adults in developing countries. The findings present important implications for improving the health status of older adults and provide suggestions for establishing a socialized aged care system in China.

    Abstract In this paper, the use of geotechnical centrifuge and numerical modeling techniques to investigate the influence of geogrid reinforcement and EPS interlayer on the lateral earth pressure and the backfill surface settlements behind gravity abutment and pile-supported abutment is reported. According to the principle of equal strain, the abutment back structure, foundation, backfill material, grid and interlayer material were simulated, and the centrifugal model test for two types of abutments was carried out with a model scale of n = 62.5, 40, respectively. The tests showed that the reinforcement of the geogrid could reduce the surface settlement of backfill and the lateral earth pressure of the backfill on the back of abutment. After setting the EPS interlayer, the influence of abutment displacement on earth pressure could be eliminated, and the earth pressure of the backfill material on the abutment back was significantly reduced. The “interlayer + geogrid” structure further reduced the earth pressure of backfill material on the abutment back. The existence of the EPS interlayer adjusted the strain distribution of the reinforced material, significantly increasing the strain of the reinforced material near the abutment, which was conducive to the reinforcement effect. The above research conclusions could provide a basis for the design and practical application of abutment backfill materials.

    Abstract A total of 2932 publications in the field of ozone pollution were obtained from the Web of Science and briefly reviewed using a bibliometric analysis and WOS-based citation reports. CiteSpace 5.7.R3 (64 bit) was used to perform a visualization of knowledge mapping by keywords co-words, burst analysis, co-cited reference analysis, and cooperation network analysis. Research topics in this field have mainly focused on three aspects: risk assessment of ozone pollution for both humans and plants under short-term and long-term exposure; ozone pollution characterization and modeling of ozone transport on different scales; and elucidating the mechanism of ozone formation and source apportionment. By clustering the co-cited references using the data from 2016 to 2021, the frontiers are found to be: (1) VOCs’ precursors and ozone transformation mechanism; (2) modeling of source apportionment and source-oriented chemical transport considering meteorological influence to predict ozone concentration at different spatial and temporal scales; and (3) premature mortality and health burden with relation to ozone exposure. It should be mentioned that an emerging research hotspot is the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, etc.) to facilitate the modeling of big data at different scales.

    Abstract In order to cope with population aging and emerging labor shortages, the Chinese government may soon introduce a policy to address this problem by raising the normal retirement age. However, the effects of planning for delayed retirement on the welfare of the elderly remain unknown. From an intergenerational support perspective, we develop a dynamic optimization model that can simulate changes in the welfare of the elderly over the years under different delayed retirement scenarios. Simulation results show that delaying retirement will produce a detrimental effect on old-age welfare. We further analyze strategies to mitigate this adverse effect and improve people’s welfare. First, the delayed retirement policy should raise the pension replacement rate, which could transfer part of the social welfare improvements from delayed retirement to the elderly through the transfer payment mechanism. Second, when adopting a defined-contribution pension system, the delayed retirement could increase the welfare of the elderly and the social well-being. Implications for future research and public policies concerning welfare effects of delayed retirement are discussed.

    Abstract Active touch facilitates environments exploration by voluntary, self-generated movements. However, the neural mechanisms underlying sensorimotor control for active touch are poorly understood. During foraging and feeding, Drosophila gather information on the properties of food (texture, hardness, taste) by constant probing with their proboscis. Here we identify a group of neurons (sd-L neurons) on the fly labellum that are mechanosensitive to labellum displacement and synapse onto the sugar-sensing neurons via axo-axonal synapses to induce preference to harder food. These neurons also feed onto the motor circuits that control proboscis extension and labellum spreading to provide on-line sensory feedback critical for controlling the probing processes, thus facilitating ingestion of less liquified food. Intriguingly, this preference was eliminated in mated female flies, reflecting an elevated need for softer food. Our results propose a sensorimotor circuit composed of mechanosensory, gustatory and motor neurons that enables the flies to select ripe yet not over-rotten food by active touch.

    Abstract BackgroundAdvanced maternal age is associated with fetal outcomes such as higher risks of birth defects and very low birth weight. Off-farm employment is an important factor in fertility transition in many developing countries. This study investigated the association between off-farm employment and fertility timing among Chinese rural women.MethodUsing data from the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS), we employed the ordinary least squares and instrumental variable approaches to estimate the effect of female off-farm employment on fertility timing decisions as well as the differences in the effect across groups.ResultsThe results show that off-farm employment participation is significantly associated with a later age at first birth, and the effect is stronger for women participating in wage employment than in off-farm self-employment. The delayed effects on fertility timing are also more pronounced for less-educated women and low-income families, implying a heterogeneous effect in terms of women's socioeconomic status.ConclusionStudies of the relationship between women's off-farm employment and fertility timing in rural areas of developing countries remain limited. This study provides important insights on this topic, and it lends support to efforts to design effective policies and practices to facilitate female employment, childbearing, and health promotion.

    Abstract The decision to treat advanced gastroesophageal cancers (GECs) with targeted therapy and immunotherapy is based on key biomarker expression (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), microsatellite instability (MSI), and/or mismatch repair (MMR)). Real-world data on testing, results, and treatment patterns are limited. This retrospective observational study used a nationwide electronic health record-derived de-identified database of patients from the United States. The analysis included adult patients with advanced GECs who initiated systemic treatment between 2017 and 2020. Biomarker testing patterns, timing, assays, tissue collection site, results, and treatment sequences were assessed. Of 1142 eligible patients, adenocarcinoma was the most prevalent histology (83% of patients). Overall, 571 (50%) patients were tested for PD-L1, 582 (51%) were tested for MMR/MSI, and 857 (75%) were tested for HER2. Between 2017 and 2020, the PD-L1 testing rate increased from 39% to 58%, and the MMR/MSI testing rate increased from 41% to 58%; the median time from initial diagnosis to first test decreased for both biomarkers. Programmed cell death receptor-1 inhibitor use was observed among patients with positive PD-L1 or MMR-deficient/MSI-High results. These results supplement data reported in key clinical trials and may inform decision-making as treatment options for advanced GECs evolve.

    Abstract With the advent of industrialization, there has been a substantial increase in the production and consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). These processed foods often contain artificially synthesized additives, such as emulsifiers. Emulsifiers constitute approximately half of the total amount of food additives, with Tween 80 being a commonly used emulsifier in the food industry. Concurrently, China is undergoing significant demographic changes, transitioning into an aging society. Despite this demographic shift, there is insufficient research on the health implications of food emulsifiers, particularly on the elderly population. In this study, we present novel findings indicating that even at low concentrations, Tween 80 suppressed the viability of multiple cell types. Prolonged in vivo exposure to 1 % Tween 80 in drinking water induced liver lipid accumulation and insulin resistance in young adult mice under a regular chow diet. Intriguingly, in mice with high-fat diet (HFD) induced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), this inductive effect was masked. In aged mice, liver lipid accumulation was replicated under prolonged Tween 80 exposure. We further revealed that Tween 80 induced inflammation in both adult and aged mice, with a more pronounced inflammation in aged mice. In conclusion, our study provides compelling evidence that Tween 80 could contribute to a low-grade inflammation and liver lipid accumulation. These findings underscore the need for increasing attention regarding the consumption of UPFs with Tween 80 as the emulsifier, particularly in the elderly consumers.
