Abstract Abstract Background In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic our institution was interested in forecasting how long surgical patients receiving elective procedures would spend in the hospital. Initial examination of our models indicated that, due to the skewed nature of the length of stay, accurate prediction was challenging and we instead opted for a simpler classification model. In this work we perform a deeper examination of predicting in-hospital length of stay. Methods We used electronic health record data on length of stay from 42,209 elective surgeries. We compare different loss-functions (mean squared error, mean absolute error, mean relative error), algorithms (LASSO, Random Forests, multilayer perceptron) and data transformations (log and truncation). We also assess the performance of two stage hybrid classification-regression approach. Results Our results show that while it is possible to accurately predict short length of stays, predicting longer length of stay is extremely challenging. As such, we opt for a two-stage model that first classifies patients into long versus short length of stays and then a second stage that fits a regresssor among those predicted to have a short length of stay. Discussion The results indicate both the challenges and considerations necessary to applying machine-learning methods to skewed outcomes. Conclusions Two-stage models allow those developing clinical decision support tools to explicitly acknowledge where they can and cannot make accurate predictions.

Abstract Traditional Qiang culture is the sum of all civilizations created by Qiang people in the long historical development of the national minority, and is an important component of Chinese civilization. However, traditional Qiang culture suffered from the attack of the great 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in the more and more vigorous process of industralization and globalization nowadays. Based on difficulties and problems encountered in post-disaster reconstruction for cultural preservation and development, this article takes into an overall consideration of Qiang traditional cultural preservation and post-disaster reconstruction, protection of nonphysical cultural heritage and national cultural resources, tries to explore the principle, approach and method of traditional Qiang cultural preservation and development and attempts to present the current situation and analyze problems, and accordingly puts forward some countermeasures, measures and specific projects with the features of scientificalness, maneuverability and development.

Abstract In this paper, by using bilinear form and extended three-wave type of ans$\ddot{a}$tz approach, we obtain new multi-soliton solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional Jimbo-Miwa equation, including the periodic breather-type of kink three-soliton solutions, the cross-kink four-soliton solutions, the doubly periodic breather-type of soliton solutions and the doubly periodic breather-type of cross-kink two-soliton solutions. It is shown that the generalized three-wave method, with the help of symbolic computation, provides an effective and powerful mathematical tool for solving high dimensional nonlinear evolution equations in mathematical physics.

Abstract Diversity soliton solutions, including breather-type kink two wave solutions, cross-kink two solitary solutions, breather-type kink three wave solutions, kink three soliton solutions, are obtained for the (2+1)-Dimensional Boiti-Leon-Manna-Pempinelli Equation by using Hirota's bilinear form and extended homoclinic test approach, respectively. Abstract In this paper, we introduce a new class of monotone operators ? (H(·, ·), ?)- monotone operators, which generalize many existing monotone operators. The resolvent operator associated with an (H(·, ·), ?)- monotone operator is defined and its Lipschitz continuity is presented. As an application, we also consider a new generalized mixed variational inclusion involving (H(·, ·), ?)-monotone operators and construct a new algorithm for solving the generalized mixed variational inclusion. Under some suitable conditions, we prove the convergence of the iterative sequences generated by the algorithm. These results improve and generalize many corresponding results in recently literatures.
