    Abstract Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the elderly is threatening the mental health of the elderly, and the interaction of some factors is worth exploring. This study aims to explore the interactions of obesity and gene polymorphisms in the relationship with MCI. A total of 2555 community resident dwellings include 444 participants who met MCI criteria recruited from the Ningxia province of China. Fourteen MCI-susceptible single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected using a high-throughput mass spectrometer. The interaction was examined by performing the multifactor dimensionality reduction model and unconditional logistic regression model. Logistic regression showed that obesity (OR = 1.42, 95%CI: 1.04-1.94), rs2075650G allele carrying (OR = 17.95, 95%CI: 1.32-244.95), rs11556505T allele carrying (OR = 0.06, 95%CI: 0.01-0.87) were statistically associated with MCI. Multifactor dimensionality reduction analysis showed a strong antagonistic effect between obesity and rs4402960 (Interaction dendrogram between obesity and rs4402960 is red) and a weak synergy effect on rs7901695 (Interaction dendrogram between obesity and rs7901695 is green). The hierarchical analysis showed obesity is a risk factor for MCI in the non-rs4402960T allele carrier group (OR = 1.55, 95%CI: 1.02-2.35). This study found that obesity is an independent risk factor for MCI, and the interactions with MCI-susceptible gene polymorphisms suggest a possible precision preventive intervention program should be developed to reduce the risk of MCI among individuals with obesity in the community.

    Abstract Abstract Background Few studies have specifically addressed quality of life issues for elderly hospice patients. The purpose of this study is to explore various factors and service patterns of the quality of life of end-of-life care for the elderly. Methods We collect the data and make small-scale exploratory study via semi-structured individual interviews. Data were collected from the family of 2 elderly cancer patients receiving hospice services, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. Results After investigation, we found that elderly people in hospice care, regardless of age, are suffering from physical and psychological pain and do not want to spend the rest of their lives in the hospital, but want to die in their own homes. Conclusions Both hospitalization and in-home care can improve resource utilization, and the key is to find various factors affecting the quality of life. Improving the quality of life is what patients and their families need most.

    Abstract Surround modulation has been abundantly studied in several mammalian brain areas, including the primary visual cortex, lateral geniculate nucleus, and superior colliculus (SC), but systematic analysis is lacking in the avian optic tectum (OT, homologous to mammal SC). Here, multi-units were recorded from pigeon ( Columba livia ) OT, and responses to different sizes of moving, flashed squares, and bars were compared. The statistical results showed that most tectal neurons presented suppressed responses to larger stimuli in both moving and flashed paradigms, and suppression induced by flashed squares was comparable with moving ones when the stimuli center crossed the near classical receptive field (CRF) center, which corresponded to the full surrounding condition. Correspondingly, the suppression grew weaker when the stimuli center moved across the CRF border, equivalent to partially surrounding conditions. Similarly, suppression induced by full surrounding flashed squares was more intense than by partially surrounding flashed bars. These results suggest that inhibitions performed on tectal neurons appear to be full surrounding rather than locally lateral. This study enriches the understanding of surround modulation properties of avian tectum neurons and provides possible hypotheses about the arrangement of inhibitions from other nuclei, both of which are important for clarifying the mechanism of target detection against clutter background performed by avians.

    Abstract Neurons responding sensitively to motions in several rather than all directions have been identified in many sensory systems. Although this directional preference has been demonstrated by previous studies to exist in the isthmi pars magnocellularis (Imc) of pigeon ( Columba livia ), which plays a key role in the midbrain saliency computing network, the dynamic response characteristics and the physiological basis underlying this phenomenon are unclear. Herein, dots moving in 16 directions and a biologically plausible computational model were used. We found that pigeon Imc’s significant responses for objects moving in preferred directions benefit the long response duration and high instantaneous firing rate. Furthermore, the receptive field structures predicted by a computational model, which captures the actual directional tuning curves, agree with the real data collected from population Imc units. These results suggested that directional preference in Imc may be internally prebuilt by elongating the vertical axis of the receptive field, making predators attack from the dorsal-ventral direction and conspecifics flying away in the ventral-dorsal direction, more salient for avians, which is of great ecological and physiological significance for survival.

    Abstract We aimed to explore the relationship between social capital (SC) and frailty, and the mediation role of depressive symptoms in this relationship. A cross-sectional study among 2,591 older adults aged ≥60 years old was conducted from September 2020 to May 2021. SC, depressive symptoms, and frailty were measured using the social capital scale, the 9-item patient health questionnaire, and the FRAIL scale, respectively. The mediation model was tested by Bootstrap PROCESS. After controlling for socio-demographical covariates, the SC was negatively correlated with frailty (r = -0.07, P = 0.001), and depressive symptomatology (r = -0.08, P<0.001); while the depressive symptomatology was positively correlated with frailty (r = 0.33, P<0.001). Logistic regression results showed that SC was associated with a lower risk of frailty (OR = 0.94; 95% CI: 0.92-0.97; P<0.001). Depressive symptomatology partially mediated (explained 36.4% of the total variance) the association between SC and frailty. Those findings suggest that SC may protect older adults from frailty by reducing depressive symptoms. Prevention and intervention implications were also discussed.

    Abstract Birds have acute vision and many remarkable visual cognition abilities, due to their unique living environment. The underlying neural mechanisms have also attracted interests of researchers in neuroscience. Here, we firstly summarize the visual cognition abilities of birds, and make a comparison with mammals. Secondly, the underlying neural mechanisms are presented, including histological structure of avian brain and visual pathways, typical experimental results and conclusions in electrochemistry and electrophysiology. The latter mainly focuses on several higher brain areas related to visual cognition, including mesopallium ventrolaterale, entopallium, visual Wulst, and nidopallium caudolaterale. Finally, we make a conclusion and provide a suggestion about future studies on revealing the neural mechanisms of avian visual cognition. This review presents a detailed understanding of avian visual cognition and would be helpful in ornithology studies in the field of cognitive neuroscience.

    Abstract In order to determine the characteristics of phytoplankton community structure in Nanhai Lake in Baotou City and its relationship with environmental factors, water and phytoplankton samples were collected and composition and biomass were investigated at six sites in the spring, summer, and autumn of 2021. This article used correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) combined with the community turnover index (BC) to analyze the phytoplankton functional groups. The results showed that 7 phyla and 68 genera of phytoplankton were identified in the water body, of which Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanobacteria, Chrysophyta, Euglenophyta, Cryptophyta, and Pyrrophyta accounted for 34%, 32%, 16%, 6%, 4%, 4%, and 3%, respectively. The phytoplankton in the water body was classified into 23 functional groups, of which MP and D functional groups were the long−term dominant functional groups, indicating that the habitat is a turbid water body. The ecological state index ( Q ) value ranged from 1.94 to 3.13, with an average value of 2.74. The comprehensive nutritional index ( TSIM (∑)) was between 49.32 and 52.11, with an average value of 51.72, indicating that Nanhai Lake was in a mesotrophic state. Correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that multiple nutrients, transparency (SD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), water temperature (WT), and Chlorophyll a (Chl−a) were the main environmental factors affecting the biomass of dominant functional groups in the water body. The study showed the characteristics of the functional groups of algae in a precious urban lake in arid and semi−arid areas of China and their relationship with environmental factors (physical and chemical indicators, anions and cation ions, and heavy metal ions), and provided a scientific basis for its water quality evaluation.

    Abstract Birds can rapidly and accurately detect moving objects for better survival in complex environments. This visual ability may be attributed to the response properties of neurons in the optic tectum. However, it is unknown how neurons in the optic tectum respond differently to moving objects compared to static ones. To address this question, neuronal activities were recorded from domestic pigeon ( Columba livia domestica ) optic tectum, responsible for orienting to moving objects, and the responses to moving and flashed stimuli were compared. An encoding model based on the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) framework was established to explain the difference in neuronal responses. The experimental results showed that the first spike latency to moving stimuli was smaller than that to flashed ones and firing rate was higher. The model further implied the faster and stronger response to a moving target result from spatiotemporal integration process, corresponding to the spatially sequential activation of tectal neurons and the accumulation of information in time. This study provides direct electrophysiological evidence about the different tectal neuron responses to moving objects and flashed ones. The findings of this investigation increase our understanding of the motion detection mechanism of tectal neurons.

    Abstract This study uses elliptical copulas and transition probabilities for uncertainty modeling of categorical spatial data. It begins by discussing the expressions of the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of two major elliptical copulas: Gaussian copula and t copula. The basic form of spatial copula discriminant function is then derived based on Bayes’ theorem, which consists of three parts: the prior probability, the conditional marginal densities, and the conditional copula density. Finally, three kinds of parameter estimation methods are discussed, including maximum likelihood estimation, inference functions for margins and canonical maximum likelihood (CML). To avoid making assumptions on the form of marginal distributions, the CML approach is adopted in the real-world case study. Results show that the occurrence probability maps generated by these two elliptical copulas are similar to each other. However, the prediction map interpolated by Gaussian copula has a relatively higher classification accuracy than t copula.
