Abstract The length of coleoptile is crucial for determining the sowing depth of oats in low-precipitation regions, which is significant for oat breeding programs. In this study, a diverse panel of 243 oat accessions was used to explore coleoptile length in two independent experiments. The panel exhibited significant variation in coleoptile length, ranging from 4.66 to 8.76 cm. Accessions from Africa, America, and the Mediterranean region displayed longer coleoptile lengths than those from Asia and Europe. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) using 26,196 SNPs identified 34 SNPs, representing 32 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) significantly associated with coleoptile length. Among these QTLs, six were consistently detected in both experiments, explaining 6.43% to 10.07% of the phenotypic variation. The favorable alleles at these stable loci additively increased coleoptile length, offering insights for pyramid breeding. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of the 350 candidate genes underlying the six stable QTLs revealed significant enrichment in cell development-related processes. Several phytochrome-related genes, including auxin transporter-like protein 1 and cytochrome P450 proteins, were found within these QTLs. Further validation of these loci will enhance our understanding of coleoptile length regulation. This study provides new insights into the genetic architecture of coleoptile length in oats.

Abstract A total of 139 vegetable oils and 48 frying oils produced in China were tested for the levels of 15 Environmental Protection Agency-regulated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The analysis was completed by high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). The limit of detection and limit of quantitation were ranged between 0.2-0.3 and 0.6-1 μg/kg, respectively. The average recovery was 58.6-90.6%. The highest mean of total PAHs was found in peanut oil (3.31 μg/kg), while the lowest content was found in olive oil (0.39 μg/kg). In brief, 32.4% of vegetable oils exceeded the European Union maximum levels in China. The detected level of total PAHs in vegetable oils was lower than the frying oils. The mean dietary exposure to PAH15 ranged from 0.197 to 2.051 ng BaPeq/kg bw/day. The margin of exposure values was greater than 10,000, and the cumulative probabilities of the incremental lifetime cancer risk of different age groups were less than the priority risk level (10

Abstract This is the first report on the content of furfural and its derivatives in coffee products in China. The concentrations of furfural and its derivatives in 449 sampled, commercially available coffee products in China were analyzed through a GC-MS technique, and the associated health risks were estimated. As a result, 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) was identified as the predominant derivative compound, with the highest concentration of 6035.0 mg/kg and detection frequency of 98.7%. The mean dietary exposures of 5-HMF, 5-MF(5-methylfurfural), and 2-F(2-furfural) in coffee products among Chinese consumers were 55.65, 3.00, and 3.23 μg/kg bw/day, respectively. The ranges of mean dietary intake of furfural and its derivatives based on age groups were all lower than the acceptable daily intake (ADI) and the toxicological concern threshold (TTC). Risk evaluation results indicate that coffee product intake did not pose potential risks to consumers. Notably, the analysis revealed that children aged 3–6 years had the highest mean exposure due to their low body weight.

Abstract Groat protein content (GPC) is a key quality trait attribute in oat. Understanding the variation of GPC in oat germplasms and identifying genomic regions associated with GPC are essential for improving this trait. In this study, the GPC of 174 diverse oat accessions was evaluated in three field trials. The results showed a wide variation in GPC, ranging from 6.97% to 22.24% in this panel. Hulless oats displayed a significantly higher GPC compared to hulled oats across all environments. A GWAS analysis was performed based on 38,313 high-quality SNPs, which detected 27 non-redundant QTLs with 41 SNPs significantly associated with GPC. Two QTLs on chromosome 6C (QTL16) and 4D (QTL11) were consistently detected in multiple environments, with QTL16 being the most significant and explaining the highest proportion of the phenotypical variation in all tested environments except in CZ20. Haplotype analysis showed that the favorable haplotypes for GPC are more prevalent in hulless oats. These findings provide a foundation for future efforts to incorporate favorable alleles into new cultivars through introgression, fine mapping, and cloning of promising QTLs.

Abstract Background: A large number of empirical studies on the surgical timing and approach of orbital fracture have been published, but which surgical timing and approach is better is still a dispute. We use a systematic review and meta-analysis to solve this problem.
Methods: We performed a systematic search in the databases of PubMed, Cochrane Clinical Trials Database, Embase, and Web of Science for relevant literature. The search terms included those concerning or describing orbital fracture, timing, and approach, which are based on population, intervention, control, outcome, and study (PICOS) framework. The statistical software packages RevMan 5.4 and Stata 14.0 were used for data analysis. We sought to evaluate postoperative complications, and results were expressed as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Forest plots, sensitivity analysis, funnel plots, Egger's test, and risk bias analysis were also performed on the included articles by using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS).
Results: A total of 7 trials involving 1,283 patients compared the surgical timing of ≤14 days versus >14 days, and another 14 trials involving 1,768 patients compared the surgical strategy of transconjunctival approach (TCA) with that of subciliary approach (SCA) for orbital fracture. The quality of all articles was higher than 7 points, which means all articles were at low risk of bias. Surgery conducted within 14 days significantly reduced the incidence of diplopia (OR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.83, P=0.005) and enophthalmos (OR: 0.32, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.83, P=0.02); TCA had a significantly lower incidence of ectropion (OR: 0.20, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.38, P<0.00001), scleral show (OR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.38, P<0.00001), and visible scar (OR: 0.15, 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.65, P=0.33) compared to SCA, but had a significantly higher incidence of entropion (OR: 5.41, 95% CI: 1.83 to 15.96, P=0.002). There was no significant publication bias among our included studies.
Conclusions: The operation in ≤14 days is better than that in >14 days. However, regarding the choice of surgical approach, TCA and SCA have their advantages and disadvantages, the exploration of which requires further research.

Abstract Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a diabetic microangiopathy with increasing incidence, which seriously threatens the quality of life of patients. This study investigated the molecular regulation mechanism of lipocalin-2 (LCN2) in DR by targeting the function of human retinal vascular endothelial cells (HRVECs).
Methods: The expression of LCN2 in the retinal tissue of diabetic and high glucose (HG)-induced HRVECs was detected by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analysis and western blotting assay. After intravitreal injection of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-NC or AAV-sh-LCN2,
Results: The expression of LCN2 was significantly up-regulated in diabetic retinal tissue and HG-induced HRVECs.
Conclusions: Down-regulation of LCN2 can significantly inhibit cell migration, invasion, and angiopoiesis, and pyroptosis regulated by caspase-1, thus attenuating the progression of DR.
