Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a prevalent sleep disorder, is intimately associated with various other diseases, particularly cardiovascular conditions. The conventional diagnostic method, nocturnal polysomnography (PSG), despite its widespread use, faces challenges due to its high cost and prolonged duration. Recent developments in electrocardiogram-based diagnostic techniques have opened new avenues for addressing these challenges, although they often require a deep understanding of feature engineering. In this study, we introduce an innovative method for OSA classification that combines a composite deep convolutional neural network model with a multimodal strategy for automatic feature extraction. This approach involves transforming the original dataset into scalogram images that reflect heart rate variability attributes and Gramian angular field matrix images that reveal temporal characteristics, aiming to enhance the diversity and richness of data features. The model comprises automatic feature extraction and feature enhancement components and has been trained and validated on the PhysioNet Apnea-ECG database. The experimental results demonstrate the model's exceptional performance in diagnosing OSA, achieving an accuracy of 96.37%, a sensitivity of 94.67%, a specificity of 97.44%, and an AUC of 0.96. These outcomes underscore the potential of our proposed model as an efficient, accurate, and convenient tool for OSA diagnosis.

Abstract Interleukin-1 mediated autoinflammatory diseases, a large class of autoinflammatory diseases characterized by increased release of interleukin-1 or activation of the interleukin-1 pathway, mainly include familial Mediterranean fever, cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome, tumor necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome, mevalonate kinase deficiency syndrome and deficiency of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. These diseases present in early childhood and affect multiple systems, which, if untreated, may result in progressive organ damage, morbidity and mortality. In 2016, European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) published recommendations for familial Mediterranean fever. For the latter four types of diseases, EULAR and the American College of Rheumatology developed several points in terms of diagnosis, management and monitoring in 2022. This article aims to introduce the application of these points.

Abstract Atherosclerosis is a complex and chronic inflammatory disease driven by multiple pathophysiological processes that are responsible for diverse cardiovascular events. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, despite substantial triumphs in primary and secondary prevention, remains a dominant epidemic that impairs human health. Therefore, deciphering the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis will provide a real‑world translational understanding. Homeobox cluster‑embedded antisense long non‑coding RNAs (HOX‑lncRNAs), a nascent class of lncRNA molecules with versatile roles in cancer, can also orchestrate various cell functions in cardiovascular disorders and have thus captured the attention of many researchers. Subsequently, numerous studies have demonstrated the role of HOX‑lncRNAs as potential modulators of atherosclerosis. Nevertheless, given that the understanding of HOX‑lncRNAs in atherosclerosis is only just emerging, ongoing research must be initiated to thoroughly pinpoint such causal roles. The present review aimed to highlight the important contributions of HOX‑lncRNAs to atherosclerosis and other pivotal biological processes related to cardiovascular disease. The review concludes with a discussion of the limitations, outlook, challenges and possible solutions associated with HOX‑lncRNAs in atherosclerosis. Looking forward, this may lead to extraordinary breakthroughs in revealing the molecular underpinnings of HOX‑lncRNAs and may offer a promising yet challenging landscape for robust therapeutic strategies for atherosclerosis and/or associated cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract This paper reveals the underpinning role of mechanical constraints and dynamic loading in triggering volume phase transitions and phase separation of hydrogels. Using the Flory-Rehner free energy that does not predict phase separation of hydrogels under equilibrium free swelling, we show that mechanical constraints can lead to coexistence of multiple phases. We systematically obtain the states of equilibrium for hydrogels under various mechanical constraints and unravel how mechanical constraints change the convexity of the free energy and monotonicity of the stress-stretch curves, leading to phase coexistence. Using a phase-field model, we predict the pattern evolution of phase coexistence and show that many features cannot be captured by the homogeneous states of equilibrium due to large mismatch stretch between the coexisting phases. We further reveal that the system size, quenching rate, and loading rate can significantly influence the phase behavior, which provides insights for experimental studies related to morphological patterns of hydrogels.
